The पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements) are mapped to the compass, not to a country, so the kitchen still belongs to the fire zone in the South-East, the mandir to the North-East and the master bedroom to the South-West.

What changes is the building. Many American homes have basements, attached garages, central heating and air-conditioning, and kitchens that open onto the family room. None of these is a fault; they simply need the principles applied afresh rather than a Mumbai layout copied onto them. Room by room, with extra attention to the parts Indian flats rarely have: the basement, the garage, the open-plan kitchen and the staircase. Each is judged on its own terms, and none of them makes a house unsuitable.

It changes how the advice is applied, not the directions. A home in Minnesota and a home in Texas read the same compass, but live with very different light, heat and air.

In the northern states, snow keeps windows shut for months, the heating runs constantly and daylight is short. Plan fresh air by opening windows briefly on milder days, keep the North-East light and uncluttered, and put warm lamps in dark corners. A shovelled, well-lit path to the front door is a small Vastu habit as much as a practical one.

In the southern states, strong afternoon sun on the West and South-West can make those rooms hot and the air-conditioning rarely rests. Heavier curtains, earthy colours and solid furniture in the South-West suit both Vastu and comfort, while the North and East stay open for gentler light.

Yes, and before you make an offer is the easiest moment. Listings often include a floor plan, or enough photographs to sketch one, and your realtor may be able to arrange a second showing where you can take compass readings at the front door.

Send two or three shortlisted homes and they can be compared on paper: where the entrance falls, whether the kitchen and bathrooms sit in workable zones, what occupies the North-East and the centre, and how the lot meets the street. This is the same thinking as flat and plot selection, applied to American lots and subdivisions.

Vastu is one input among several. Your home inspector, realtor and lender cover things a Vastu review does not, and a layout that needs a few remedies is rarely a reason to walk away from a house that suits your family in every other way.

The mandir belongs in the North-East, the ईशान्य (Ishanya), on the floor where the family actually spends its day. A spare room upstairs or a basement corner is tempting in a large house, but a clean shelf in the North-East of the main living area is used far more.

Lighting a diya is usually possible with care. American homes have smoke alarms, and some HOAs and leases have rules about open flames. Keep the flame small and brief, away from the alarm, curtains and carpet, and never cover or disable an alarm. Where flames are not allowed, an electric diya carries the same intention.
