Car Parking and Garage Vastu for Bungalows and Societies
Where should the garage go, and which way should the car face? Traditional car parking Vastu for bungalows, and an honest guide for Mumbai societies where your parking slot is allotted, not chosen.

01
Does car parking matter in Vastu?
Yes, car parking matters in Vastu, mainly because a vehicle is a large, heavy object that occupies one zone of the plot for most of the day. Where that weight sits is believed to affect the balance of the whole property.
Classical Vastu texts were written long before cars. They speak of places for carts, chariots and animals, and modern practitioners have applied the same thinking to garages. So today's parking guidance is a sensible adaptation, not a line from an old text. It applies most fully to bungalows and row houses, where the owner decides the layout.
02
Which direction suits a garage in a bungalow?
The North-West or the South-East suits a garage in a bungalow. These are the two zones most practitioners recommend when you are free to choose.
01
North-West
The zone of वायु (Vayu, the Air element), linked with movement. It is traditionally the first choice for anything that comes and goes, including vehicles.
02
South-East
The zone of Agni, the Fire element. Engines, fuel and heat are said to sit comfortably here, so it is the common second choice.
03
South or West
Often acceptable for an open car porch when the two zones above are not available.
03
Why is the North-East avoided for parking?
The North-East is avoided for parking because Vastu keeps this zone light, open and clean. It is called the ईशान्य (Ishanya), the zone of the Water element, and is traditionally linked with clarity and prayer.
A heavy car, oil stains and exhaust fumes are the opposite of what this corner is meant to hold. If your bungalow already has a garage there, do not panic. Keep it very clean, park the lightest vehicle in it, and ask a consultant about non-structural remedies before thinking of any rebuilding.
04
Which way should the car face when parked?
The car should ideally face East or North when parked. Many practitioners advise this so that the vehicle points towards the directions linked with light and opportunity, and it is commonly said that the car should not face South.
Treat this as a preference, not a rule to worry over. In a tight garage, safe reversing matters more than the compass. Leave a little walking space on all sides if you can, so the car does not touch the walls. Not sure which way your slot points? Our direction finder will tell you in a minute.
05
What if your society has allotted your parking slot?
If your society has allotted your slot, accept it calmly, because the direction of a shared stilt, basement or podium car park is not something one flat owner can change. This is the reality for most Mumbai families.
It also matters less than people fear. A society car park belongs to the whole building, and your own home is judged by the compass reading of your flat, taken from its centre. An allotted slot in a so-called wrong direction does not undo a well-arranged flat. Please do not pay extra to swap slots purely on Vastu grounds.
06
What can you still do with an allotted slot?
You can still keep your slot clean, bright and uncluttered, which are the things Vastu cares about in any space. These steps cost very little.
01
Keep it clean
Sweep away dust, leaves and oil patches. Fix leaks early.
02
Keep it lit
Ask the society to replace dead tube lights near your slot. A dark corner feels neglected and is less safe.
03
Store nothing
Old tyres, cartons and broken furniture around the car create clutter. Many societies and fire rules do not allow storage in parking areas anyway.
04
Do not jam the nose to the wall
Leave a small gap in front and behind so the car is not wedged in.
05
Face out if allowed
Reversing in, so the car points towards the driveway, makes leaving easier. Follow your society's rule.
07
What small details help in a bungalow garage?
Small details that help in a bungalow garage are light wall colours, a smooth-opening gate and a floor that drains well. White, cream or light grey keeps the garage bright.
Try not to use the garage as a second store room. Keep tools on one tidy shelf and remove scrap regularly. For the home itself, our residential Vastu page explains how each zone is used.
08
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert when you are designing a bungalow or redeveloping a plot, because the garage is easy to place well on paper and costly to move later. A consultation also helps if an existing garage sits in the North-East.

Questions
Frequently asked
Which direction is good for car parking as per Vastu?
The North-West and the South-East are traditionally considered good for car parking as per Vastu. The North-West is linked with movement and the South-East with fire and engines. The North-East is usually kept free of vehicles. In a society, the slot you are allotted is acceptable; keep it clean and well lit.
Can a car be parked facing South?
Many practitioners prefer that a parked car faces East or North and does not face South. This is a traditional preference, and it should never come before safe parking. If your slot only allows a South-facing position, park that way without worry and keep the slot tidy.
Is basement parking bad as per Vastu?
No, basement parking is not bad in itself. In Mumbai it is often the only option. Vastu prefers basements under the North or East part of a building, but residents cannot change that. What you can influence is good lighting, ventilation, dryness and a clutter-free slot.
Does my society parking slot affect the Vastu of my flat?
Very little. The Vastu of your flat is read from the centre of the flat itself, using a compass. A shared car park is part of the building's common area. An allotted slot in an unfavourable direction does not cancel a well-planned home, so it is not worth losing sleep over.
Can I keep old things in my garage or parking slot?
It is better not to. Vastu links stored scrap, old tyres and broken items with stagnation, and a cluttered parking area is also a fire and pest risk. Most housing societies do not allow storage in stilt or basement parking. Keep only what the car needs.
