Is each room in the right place?
Pick a room and the direction it sits in. You see how that placement is traditionally read and, if it is a weak one, what can be done without moving a wall.
1. Which room?
Common questions
- Which direction is right for a kitchen as per Vastu?
- The South-East, the fire zone, is the traditional place for a kitchen, with the cook facing east. The North-West is the accepted second choice. A kitchen in the North-East or South-West is the placement most often corrected, using stove position, colour and light rather than rebuilding.
- Which direction should the main bedroom be in?
- The South-West is the traditional zone for the main bedroom because it is linked with stability. South is also favoured. The bed is placed so the head points south or east. A North-East or South-East main bedroom is usually corrected or swapped with another room.
- Where should a toilet be as per Vastu?
- The North-West and West are the traditional zones for toilets and bathrooms. The North-East, the South-West and the centre of the home are the placements Vastu advises against. In a flat these cannot be moved, so they are managed with non-structural remedies.
- Which main door direction is good in Vastu?
- North, North-East and East doors are traditionally favoured. West and North-West doors are workable. South and South-West doors need more care, and which part of the wall the door sits in matters more than the direction alone.
- Can a wrongly placed room be fixed without breaking walls?
- In most cases, yes. Stove and bed position, where the heavy furniture sits, colour, lighting, metal strips and keeping the space dry and clear do most of the work. Structural change is a last resort and is rarely possible in a flat anyway.
- How do I find which zone a room is in?
- Stand at the centre of the home with a compass, away from metal and appliances, and note which direction the room lies in. A phone compass is accurate enough for a first check; the free compass tool on this site walks you through it.
