Vastu Consultant for Homes in the UK
British homes bring their own Vastu questions: a Victorian terrace with the kitchen in a rear extension, a semi with a north-facing garden, a converted flat with rooms in odd shapes. Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar works through them with families across the UK, on a site visit or online from a floor plan and photographs.

01
Does Vastu work for a home in the UK?
Yes. The directions are absolute, so the North-East of a terrace in Leicester is read exactly as it would be in a Mumbai flat, and the core placements stay the same: kitchen in the South-East, master bedroom in the South-West, mandir in the North-East, the centre kept open.
What differs is the housing. Much of the UK lives in homes built long ago, extended and divided over the decades, and the light is very different from India's. The advice adapts to that, as Vastu for NRI homes abroad explains in more detail.
02
How does Vastu read terraced, semi-detached and detached houses?
By working with the shape each type gives you, since none of them can be turned to face a different way. The street sets the entrance; the rest is about how the rooms behind it are used.
01
Terraced houses
Long and narrow, sharing walls on both sides, with the front door on the street and the kitchen often at the back in an extension. Light falls mainly at the front and back, so the middle of the house is usually the darkest part; keep it clear and well lit, as the centre should be.
02
Semi-detached houses
One open side gives a side door and often a side return. If the family uses that door every day, keep the formal front entrance in regular use as well, and keep both clean and lit.
03
Detached houses
The most freedom to choose which room does what. Where there is a choice, give the South-West bedroom to the head of the household and keep heavier furniture and storage to the South and West.
04
Flats and conversions
Purpose-built flats are read like any apartment. Flats carved out of older houses can have a kitchen in a former scullery or a bathroom off a landing; these are balanced with placement, colour and light rather than building work.
03
Is a south-facing house bad, or a north-facing garden?
Neither is bad. The main door is judged by its exact compass position along the wall, its pada, and some South-facing positions are considered favourable while others are balanced with simple remedies; see south-facing homes.
The garden question is interesting in Britain, because buyers usually prize a south-facing garden. That generally means the front door faces North, which Vastu tends to welcome. The reverse, a small north-facing garden, keeps open space on the North side of the house, which Vastu also likes: the North and East are meant to stay lighter and more open than the South and West.
A shaded garden does need care. Keep lawns, low plants and any water feature to the North and East, taller shrubs to the South and West, and do not let the back become a store for bins, broken furniture and old pots.
04
How do low winter sun and damp affect a British home?
They make light and air the two most useful remedies you have. Through the winter the sun stays low in the southern sky and the days are short, so rooms on the North side can feel dim for months, and older houses are prone to condensation and damp.
Treat damp as a practical problem first. A persistently damp corner, especially in the North-East, should be looked at by a builder or reported to the landlord before anything is placed there, since no remedy works on a wet wall. Open windows briefly each day even in winter, use the extractor fans, and dry laundry where air can move.
- Put warm lamps in dark corners and on the stairs; lighting dark corners explains where light helps most.
- Keep the North-East light in colour and uncluttered, so it reflects what daylight there is.
- Use heavier curtains in the South-West bedroom for warmth, and lighter fabrics on North and East windows.
05
Can you follow Vastu in a rented, leasehold or listed home?
Yes, because the remedies used here are non-structural. Many people in the UK rent, leasehold flats come with rules set by the freeholder or management company, and listed buildings and conservation areas limit changes even for owners. None of that touches what you actually need to do.
Bed and desk direction, the direction you face at the hob, decluttering by zone, colour in cushions and rugs instead of paint, lamps, plants, and portable crystals and pyramids all leave the walls untouched and go with you when the tenancy ends. Vastu for rented flats has a fuller list.
06
Where should the mandir go, and how do you light diyas safely in a UK home?
The mandir goes in the North-East, the ईशान्य (Ishanya, the sacred corner), even if it is only a shelf in a narrow living room. Keep it clean, at a sensible height, and off any wall shared with a bathroom.
British homes have smoke alarms, and some tenancy agreements and leases restrict open flames. Light one small diya in a supervised spot, away from the alarm and curtains, and never cover the alarm; where flames are not allowed, electric diyas give the same welcome at the door.
Diwali often falls close to Bonfire Night, so fireworks are easier to enjoy at a public display than at home. Community celebrations in cities such as Leicester and London, and Navratri garba in local halls, help children grow up with the festivals. See celebrating Diwali abroad.

How does a site visit or online session work from the UK, and when should you book?
Dr. Kimaya travels to the UK for site visits, arranged on the free first call; the VastuKimaya office is in Andheri East, Mumbai. If you prefer an online session, it runs by video call, and your morning is the simplest time to book, because it falls in the Indian afternoon. Sessions are held Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 7 pm IST.
The UK is 4 h 30 min behind IST during British Summer Time and 5 h 30 min behind in winter (GMT). The Indian working day therefore ends at 2:30 pm UK time in summer and 1:30 pm in winter, so a session between about 8 am and noon works all year, on a weekday before work or on a Saturday. India does not change its clocks, so recheck any repeat slot after the UK clocks move in late March and late October.
For an online session, send a floor plan with North marked, compass readings from inside the front door and photographs of every room, including the extension and the garden; the preparation checklist covers the rest. Dr. Kimaya studies them beforehand and sends a written report after the session, just as she does after a site visit. Sessions are in English, Hindi, Marathi or Gujarati, the first call is free, and the online Vastu consultation page explains every step. प्रश्न Questions
Common questions about UK
Is a north-facing garden bad for Vastu?
No. A garden on the North side keeps that side of the house open, which Vastu generally welcomes. Keep it tidy, with lawns and low plants to the North and East and taller shrubs to the South and West, and do not use it as a store for bins and clutter.
My terrace has the kitchen in a rear extension. Is that a problem?
Not necessarily. What matters is which zone the extension falls in and how you use it. If it is not in the South-East or North-West, cooking facing East, keeping the hob and sink apart, and colour and light around the cooking area usually balance it without any building work.
The bathroom upstairs is above our kitchen. What can we do?
Keep both rooms bright, dry and well ventilated, and keep the bathroom door and toilet lid closed. Vastu treats this as a mild point to balance rather than a reason for worry, and remedies are chosen after looking at your plan.
What time should I book from London or Manchester?
A morning slot. Sessions run 9 am to 7 pm IST, which is 4:30 am to 2:30 pm UK time in summer and 3:30 am to 1:30 pm in winter, so a start between about 8 am and noon suits most people, including on Saturdays.
Does Dr. Kimaya visit homes in the UK?
Yes. Dr. Kimaya travels for site visits, arranged on the free first call. If you prefer, the consultation can be held online by video call instead, with your floor plan, compass readings and photographs studied before the session. Either way the analysis is the same, and the written report is sent to you afterwards.
