Vastu for NRI Homes Abroad: What Applies and What Doesn't

The principles do, because they are built on things that do not change with geography: the path of the sun, the prevailing wind, the movement of light through a day, and the human preference for order over clutter. A South-East kitchen is recommended for reasons about morning light and fire, and those reasons hold in Houston as in Hyderabad.

The directions themselves are absolute. North is North in Nairobi, Dubai and Oslo, and the पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements) are mapped to those directions rather than to any particular country.

What does not transfer is the collection of habits that grew up around Indian houses — assumptions about construction, climate, heating, plot size and how a family uses rooms. Those need rethinking, not copying.

Six things, mostly practical, and they explain why a Vastu recommendation abroad sometimes looks different from the same recommendation in Mumbai.

The core ones, and they are the ones that carry most of the benefit anyway.

Sleeping with the head towards South or East. The master bedroom in the South-West for stability. The kitchen in the South-East where possible, North-West acceptable, cooking facing East. The pooja space or mandir in the North-East. Keeping toilets out of the North-East and away from the centre where the layout allows. Keeping the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) of the home open and light. Cash and the locker facing North, the direction of Kubera.

The entrance is checked by compass pada regardless of what the street does. North, East and North-East entries are generally favourable, and other orientations are workable with remedies — this does not change because the house is in a cul-de-sac in Texas.

Where houses abroad differ is that the door you actually use is often not the front door. Families come in through the garage or a side door for months at a time, and that habit matters. If the formal entrance is never opened, the energy of the entrance is not doing what the plan intends.

A simple remedy is to use the main door regularly, keep the approach to it clear and lit, and keep the entrance lobby free of shoes and rubbish bins. In snow-bound countries, this takes deliberate effort — which is exactly why it is worth naming.

The non-structural ones, which is the whole approach used here — no demolition, nothing that needs a builder or a permit.

Activated pyramids, crystals, colour on walls and furnishings, metal objects, sound, salt therapy, plants, light and simple home rituals do the work. Most of them cost little, several can be sourced locally, and almost all can be packed into a suitcase when you move again.

Crystal therapy is particularly practical abroad, since stones are widely available in most countries and placement is what matters. Colour and light are the other two levers that rented and restricted homes can always use.

Open flame rituals in a sealed, carpeted, smoke-alarmed flat. A havan indoors in a Canadian winter is a fire risk, and no tradition asks you to be unsafe. Use a small diya briefly with ventilation, or an electric lamp where rules forbid flame.

Rebuilding to Indian proportions. Cutting a wall in a house you do not own, or spending heavily to relocate a kitchen, is almost never proportionate — and it is not what this practice recommends.

Importing anxiety. A great deal of what circulates online about Vastu abroad is fear dressed up as guidance. Every direction has strengths and every layout has remedies, and no home is beyond help. If something you read makes you frightened rather than clearer, that is a sign about the source, not about your house.

Apply the reversible principles and skip everything else. Where you place the bed, which way you face while cooking, where the study desk goes, whether the centre is clear, and how the home is lit are all free and undoable.

For short leases, keep remedies portable. Crystals, a pyramid, a small mandir shelf, colour in cushions and curtains rather than paint, and one clean surface in each room will carry you a long way.

If you move again, the analysis is redone for the new home rather than carried across. Direction is specific to a building, and a remedy that suited a flat in Singapore may be irrelevant in a house in Reading.

A sensible time is before signing, after moving into a home that has never settled, or when a particular room is consistently avoided by everyone in the family.
