01
What kinds of Kolkata homes can be read online?
Old ancestral houses, independent homes and new high-rise flats can all be read online, as long as the plan and photographs show the house clearly. North Kolkata and the older parts of the city still have large family houses built around a courtyard, with a thakur ghar or thakur dalan for the family deity and a roof terrace used every day.
Salt Lake has independent houses on their own plots, many altered floor by floor. To the east, New Town and Rajarhat have tall residential towers and gated complexes, and older neighbourhoods across the city have apartment buildings that replaced family houses. Each calls for a different reading: how to honour a layout that cannot change, or how to choose and arrange a new one.
02
How does Vastu treat an old Kolkata house with a courtyard and thakur ghar?
Kindly, because a house built around an open courtyard already follows one of Vastu's oldest ideas. The courtyard, the uthon, sits at the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre), which Vastu wants open to sky, light and air. Keeping it clear of heavy storage, parked scooters and clutter is often the most useful single step; see keeping the centre open.
The thakur ghar ideally sits in the ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East), with the family facing East or North during prayer. If it has been in another part of the house for generations, it is not moved casually. Dr. Kimaya suggests ways to support it where it is, such as cleanliness, good light, a raised platform and keeping it away from a shared wall with a toilet. Ancestors' photographs are usually kept on a South or South-West wall rather than inside the shrine; see ancestor photo placement.
03
How do Kolkata's humidity, storms and monsoon affect Vastu at home?
They make dryness, ventilation and maintenance part of the Vastu advice. The humid air and heavy monsoon rain mean old walls take in damp, cupboards smell musty and corners grow mould, and the first places to check are the North-East, which should feel clean and fresh, and the South-West, where storage should stay dry and solid.
In late spring, the Kalbaishakhi storms often sweep in from the North-West. That zone is वायव्य (Vayavya, the air zone), and its windows and balconies are welcome for cross-ventilation; they simply need sturdy shutters, secured planters and fittings that do not rattle. The afternoon sun on the West side is handled with curtains and heavier furniture, so the North and East can stay open to gentle light.
Roof terraces are part of daily life here. Keep the heavy water tank in the South-West, and let the North-East portion of the terrace stay light, clean and free of standing water after rain.
04
What should you check in a New Town flat or a Salt Lake house?
In a New Town or Rajarhat flat, check your own unit's orientation and main door first; in a Salt Lake house, add the gate, the plot and each floor's use. Large complexes repeat one layout across towers that face different ways, so identical-looking flats can place the kitchen, toilets and master bedroom in quite different zones.
For a flat, Dr. Kimaya looks at the main door's exact pada, the kitchen in the South-East or North-West, the master bedroom in the South-West and any toilet in the North-East or centre. High floors feel more exposed to wind and sky, so a solid, heavier South-West helps the home feel settled; high-rise apartment Vastu explains more. Before booking, the flat and plot selection service compares shortlisted units from their plans.
05
Can Vastu help when the family house is divided or rebuilt?
Yes. When an ancestral house is shared among several branches of a family, each portion with its own kitchen and bedrooms is read as its own home, while shared spaces such as the courtyard, staircase and terrace are kept clear and cared for together.
When a family house is rebuilt as an apartment building, families move into flats whose rooms fall in entirely new zones. A fresh reading helps decide who sleeps where, where the thakur ghar goes and which remedies suit the new layout; see new or redeveloped homes.
06
Which Bengali home customs sit naturally with Vastu?
Many of them, because they centre on light, the threshold and a clean prayer space. The evening lamp lit at dusk and the sound of the shankha bring light and sound into the home at the same hour each day, and Vastu also treats light and sound as gentle remedies.
For Lakshmi Puja, the alpana drawn at the entrance, often with small footprints stepping inside, marks the threshold as a welcoming place. A tulsi mancha in the courtyard is well placed towards the North, East or North-East; see tulsi placement. Before Poila Baishakh, a thorough clean of the house is a natural moment to clear the North-East and the centre.

How does a Vastu consultation for Kolkata work, in person or online?
It starts with a free first call on +91 70391 07512, where you choose a site visit or an online consultation; for a visit, Dr. Kimaya travels to Kolkata on dates arranged on that call. Online, you send the floor plan with North marked, photographs or a short video of every room including the courtyard and terrace, and compass readings from just inside the main door. Dr. Kimaya studies them, explains her findings on a video call and sends a written report of non-structural remedies, with follow-up afterwards.
Sessions run Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 7 pm IST, in English, Hindi, Marathi or Gujarati; Bengali is not offered, so most Kolkata families choose English or Hindi. The Vastu consultation across India and abroad page explains every step.

प्रश्न Questions
Common questions about Kolkata
Where should the thakur ghar be in a Kolkata home?
Ideally in the North-East, with the family facing East or North during prayer. If it has been elsewhere for generations, it can stay there with support: cleanliness, good light, a raised platform and no shared wall with a toilet.
Is the open courtyard of an old Kolkata house good as per Vastu?
Generally yes. An open courtyard keeps the centre of the home, the Brahmasthan, open to light and air, which Vastu values. Keep it clean and free of heavy storage, vehicles and clutter.
Our ancestral house is shared by several families. Can Vastu still help?
Yes. Each family's portion is read as its own home, with its entrance, kitchen and bedrooms checked separately. Shared spaces such as the courtyard, staircase and terrace are kept clear and looked after together.
Do the Kalbaishakhi storms from the North-West make that side unfavourable?
No. The North-West is the air zone, and openings there are welcome for ventilation. The storms are a practical concern, so keep shutters sturdy, planters secured and fittings tight, rather than closing that side up.
Can the online session be in Bengali?
Not at present. Sessions are offered in English, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati, and most Kolkata families choose English or Hindi.
Will Dr. Kimaya visit our Kolkata house in person?
Yes, if you would like a visit. She travels to Kolkata and other cities for site visits, and the dates are arranged on the free first call. Many flats and houses are also handled fully online from a clear plan and photographs, with the same written report.
