01

How do you find the directions in your home?

Every tip below depends on knowing which part of your home faces which direction. You can check this yourself in ten minutes. For a precise reading, Dr. Kimaya measures with a compass during a home visit.

How do you find the directions in your home?
  • 01

    Stand in the centre

Find the middle of your flat or house, away from fridges, metal cupboards and wiring.

  • 02

    Use a phone compass

Hold the phone flat and note where North points. Take two or three readings.

  • 03

    Mark 8 zones

On a floor plan, mark the four directions and four corners, like slices of a pie.

  • 04

    Note each room

Write down the zone of each room, door, stove, bed and toilet.

02

Main door Vastu: which direction should the entrance face?

Vastu calls the main door the mouth of the home, because people, light and energy enter through it. North, North-East and East entrances are favourable. Other directions are not automatically bad: each wall is split into smaller segments (Padas), and the door's exact segment matters most.

  • 01

    Opens inwards

The door should open into the home, which symbolises welcoming good things in.

  • 02

    Bright and clean

Keep the entrance well lit, especially at night, with a clear name plate and no dustbins or broken items nearby.

  • 03

    Nothing blocking it

Avoid a door that directly faces another door, a staircase or a toilet door.

  • 04

    Shoes to the side

Keep the shoe rack inside or to one side, not right at the doorway.

  • 05

    Solid and quiet

A solid wooden door is preferred. Oil squeaky hinges and avoid a beam directly above the door.

  • 06

    If you can't change it

If your door faces a wall or sits in a less favourable direction, a well-placed mirror, plant, toran or pyramid can help rebalance the entrance.

03

Where should the mandir or pooja ghar be?

The North-East corner (Ishanya, ईशान्य) is the calmest, most sacred zone of a home, so it is the ideal place for the mandir. The North or East also work well. The person praying should ideally face East or North.

Where should the mandir or pooja ghar be?
  • 01

    Never in a bedroom

Do not place the mandir inside a bedroom, or on a wall shared with a toilet, or above or below one.

  • 02

    Raise it up

Keep the mandir between waist and eye level, not on the floor.

  • 03

    Small idols

Idols in a home mandir are traditionally kept under 9 inches tall, and not against the South or West wall.

  • 04

    Only pooja items

Do not store money, medicines or everyday items there. Remove broken idols and faded pictures.

  • 05

    Light colours

White, cream, light yellow or light blue suit the space. Use wood, marble or stone.

  • 06

    If you can't change it

In a small Mumbai flat, a wall-mounted wooden mandir on the North-East or East wall of the living room is a good alternative to a separate room.

04

Which direction is ideal for the kitchen?

The kitchen holds the fire element, so Vastu places it in the South-East (Agneya) corner, the zone linked with fire. The North-West is a good second choice. Try to avoid a kitchen in the North-East, the South-West or the centre of the home.

  • 01

    Stove in the South-East

Place the gas stove in the South-East part of the kitchen so the cook faces East.

  • 02

    Keep fire and water apart

The sink belongs in the North or North-East of the kitchen, not right next to or opposite the stove.

  • 03

    Fridge placement

The refrigerator suits the South-West or West part of the kitchen.

  • 04

    Clean and working

Keep counters clear, fix gas and water leaks quickly, and do not store medicines in the kitchen.

  • 05

    If you can't change it

If your kitchen is in the wrong zone, shift the stove within the room so you face East, use warm yellow or cream on the walls, and keep the space bright.

05

Bedroom Vastu: where should the bed and headboard go?

The master bedroom is ideally in the South-West (Nairutya) corner, the zone of stability, and is suited to the head of the family. Sleeping with your head towards the South is preferred. East is good for students, West is acceptable, and head towards North is avoided in Vastu.

  • 01

    Headboard on a solid wall

Place the bed with its headboard against the South or West wall.

  • 02

    No beam overhead

Avoid sleeping directly under a ceiling beam.

  • 03

    Mirrors away from the bed

A mirror should not reflect you while you sleep. Cover it at night if it cannot be moved.

  • 04

    Door not facing the bed

The bedroom door should not open directly onto the bed.

  • 05

    Calm colours, fewer screens

Choose cream, soft green, light blue or peach, and keep TVs and laptops out of the bedroom.

  • 06

    If you can't change it

If your bedroom is in the North-East, keep heavy furniture in its South-West corner, use earthy colours and keep the room free of clutter, including under the bed.

06

How should a living room be set up as per Vastu?

The living room works well in the North, East or North-East of the home, where it gets light and a sense of openness. The North-West suits families who entertain often. Avoid using the South-West or South-East corners as the main sitting area.

How should a living room be set up as per Vastu?
  • 01

Heavy sofas on South or West walls

Keep sofas and bookshelves along the South or West walls, so the host faces East or North.

  • 02

    Open centre

Leave the middle of the room free of heavy furniture.

  • 03

    TV on the South-East wall

This keeps the North and East walls light and open.

  • 04

    Uplifting art

Choose nature, flowing water or sunrise images. Avoid war scenes, sad faces or dark pictures.

  • 05

    Water in the North-East

A small fountain, fish tank or fresh flowers suit the North or North-East corner.

  • 06

    If you can't change it

If seating has to sit under a beam or in a dark corner, add a warm lamp, light wall colours such as cream or soft green, and a healthy plant.

07

What does Vastu suggest for a children's room?

The West is a good zone for a child's bedroom, as it is linked with steady routine and sound sleep. The North-West suits outgoing, social children, and the East suits children who are focused on studies. Keep the South-West for the parents. These ideas complement good parenting and your doctor's advice; they never replace them.

  • 01

    Study facing East or North

Place the desk so your child faces East or North, with some open space in front rather than a bare wall.

  • 02

    Head towards East or South

Young children sleep better with the head towards the East or South.

  • 03

    Cheerful, light colours

Light green, sky blue, light yellow or cream work well.

  • 04

    Screens away from study

Keep gaming screens away from the desk and avoid a mirror facing the bed.

  • 05

    If you can't change it

If your child shares a room in the wrong zone, simply turn the desk to face East, add a world map on the East wall and keep a daily ten-minute tidy-up.

08

Which direction is good for a study room or home office?

A dedicated study works well in the West for steady concentration, the North-East for learning, the East for fresh ideas, or the North for career-focused work. This applies equally to students preparing for exams and adults working from home.

Which direction is good for a study room or home office?
  • 01

    Face East or North

Sit so you face East or North while reading or working.

  • 02

    Gap from the wall

Leave a little space between the desk and the wall in front of you.

  • 03

    No beam above the desk

Move the desk if a ceiling beam runs over your head.

  • 04

    Tidy desk

Keep only today's books and papers on the table. Clutter makes it harder to focus.

  • 05

    Light and quiet

Use light yellow, cream or light green walls, natural light from the East or North, and no TV in the study.

  • 06

    If you can't change it

If the study shares a wall with a toilet, keep the toilet door closed and place a Clear Quartz or Green Aventurine crystal on the desk.

09

Where should the bathroom and toilet be as per Vastu?

A bathroom for bathing suits the East, and is acceptable in the South, West or North-West. A toilet is more acceptable in the South-East or North-West, with the seat facing North or South. The North-East, the North and the centre of the home are the zones to avoid for toilets, as they are linked with clarity, money and the home's balance.

  • 01

    Door and lid closed

Keep the toilet lid down and the bathroom door shut when not in use.

  • 02

    Fix leaks quickly

In Vastu, a dripping tap is linked with money slipping away.

  • 03

    Light tiles

White, cream or light grey tiles, plus a window or exhaust fan, keep the space fresh and bright.

  • 04

    Nothing valuable inside

Do not store medicines, jewellery or money in the bathroom.

  • 05

    If you can't change it

For a toilet in the North-East or North, which is common in Mumbai flats, keep it spotless, use a bowl of sea salt changed weekly, and ask about crystal or pyramid remedies.

प्रश्न Questions

Common questions about Room-by-Room Vastu

Which direction is ideal for the kitchen as per Vastu?

The South-East is the ideal direction for a kitchen because Vastu links it with the fire element. The North-West is an acceptable second choice. Avoid the North-East, South-West and the centre of the home. Inside the kitchen, the cook should face East, with the sink kept well away from the stove.

Which direction should my head be while sleeping as per Vastu?

Vastu recommends sleeping with your head towards the South for deep, restful sleep. East is good for students and West is acceptable, while head towards North is avoided. The simplest way to get this right is to place the headboard against the South or West wall.

Which direction is ideal for a mandir at home?

The North-East corner is the ideal place for a home mandir, because it is considered the most sacred and peaceful zone. The North or East of the home are good alternatives. Keep the mandir raised between waist and eye level, and never place it inside a bedroom or against a wall shared with a toilet.

My toilet is in the North-East. What can I do?

A North-East toilet is a common Vastu concern, especially in apartments. Start by keeping it very clean, well ventilated, with the lid down and door closed. A bowl of sea salt, changed weekly, is a simple step. Dr. Kimaya can suggest specific crystal and pyramid remedies after seeing where it sits on your floor plan.

My main door faces South. Is that bad in Vastu?

Not necessarily. Vastu divides each wall into smaller segments, and some segments of a South-facing wall are acceptable for an entrance. What matters is the exact position of the door. Dr. Kimaya checks this with a compass and, if needed, suggests remedies such as pyramids, a toran or specific colours.

Can the mandir be in the kitchen or bedroom?

A mandir should not be placed inside a bedroom. In a kitchen, it is acceptable only in the kitchen's North-East corner, away from the stove, though a separate dedicated space is preferred. In compact flats, a wall-mounted mandir in the North-East or East of the living room is usually a better option than either room.

Which direction should a child face while studying?

A child should face East or North while studying. Vastu links East with fresh learning and North with focus and memory. Leave some open space in front of the desk instead of a bare wall, avoid placing the desk under a beam, and keep gaming screens away from the study area.

Can a mirror face the bed as per Vastu?

Vastu advises against a mirror that reflects you while you sleep, including wardrobe mirrors and dressing tables. If you cannot move it, cover it with a cloth or curtain at night, or fit a sliding panel. A mirror inside a wardrobe door, or on a wall the bed does not face, avoids the issue altogether.
