Choosing Crystals When You Live Abroad

You do not need to carry stones back from India in a suitcase. Buying crystals abroad is straightforward once you know what to check, what to avoid, and how placement is guided remotely.

Choosing Crystals When You Live Abroad

01

Can you buy crystals where you live instead of bringing them from India?

Yes, and in most cases you should. Quartz, amethyst, citrine, black tourmaline, rose quartz, selenite and pyrite are quarried and sold worldwide, and a stone bought in Toronto is not lesser than one bought in Mumbai.

The tradition attaches meaning to the mineral and to where it is placed, not to the shop it came from. What matters is that the stone is what it claims to be, and that it is cleansed before use.

Carrying stones in luggage is also less simple than people assume. Large pieces are heavy, points and clusters chip, and some countries ask questions about mineral specimens at the border. Buying locally avoids all of it.

02

How do you tell a real stone from a treated one?

By looking closely and asking directly. Dyeing and imitation are common in the low-price end of the market everywhere, not only in one country.

  • 01

    Look for natural unevenness

Real stone has inclusions, cloudiness and slight colour variation. A piece that is flawlessly uniform and very cheap is usually glass or resin.

  • 02

Watch for dye in the cracks

Dyed stones show concentrated colour pooling in fissures. Very vivid blues, purples and greens at a low price are worth questioning.

  • 03

Check the weight and the temperature

Stone feels cool to the touch and heavier than it looks. Plastic and resin warm up quickly in the hand.

  • 04

Be sceptical of heated citrine sold as natural

Much commercial citrine is heat-treated amethyst, recognisable by a whitish base and a strong orange tip. A good seller will tell you which you are buying.

  • 05

Ask for the mineral name and origin

'Amethyst, Brazil' is an answer. 'Positive energy stone' is not. A seller who cannot name the mineral does not know their stock.

  • 06

    Prefer smaller and genuine

A small honest piece placed correctly is more use than a large decorative one of unclear origin.

03

Where should you buy?

From sellers who deal in minerals rather than in claims. Mineral and fossil shops, geology fairs and museum shops in most countries sell accurately labelled stone, often more cheaply than wellness boutiques.

Online is workable if the listing names the mineral, states the origin and treatment, shows the actual piece rather than a stock photograph, and gives dimensions and weight. Be wary of listings that lead with promises of what the stone will do for your love life or your income.

Avoid anything sold with urgency, anything described as certified by an authority you cannot verify, and anything priced as though it were a gemstone when it is a common mineral. Price is not a proof of authenticity in either direction.

04

What should you do before using a new crystal?

Cleanse it. A new stone has been mined, handled, shipped and displayed, and cleansing is the standard first step before it is placed anywhere.

Simple methods suit most stones: a few hours in sunlight or moonlight, a rinse under running water for hard stones such as quartz, a night resting on a bed of rock salt, or smoke from incense. Some stones dislike water and salt — selenite dissolves and should be kept dry, and softer stones can be damaged — so check the mineral first.

Then place it with intention rather than as decoration. A moment of quiet, a clear thought about what you would like the stone to support, and a deliberate placement is the practice. There is more on method in crystal therapy.

05

How is placement guided from a distance?

From your floor plan and photographs, the same way a distant Vastu analysis works. The stone is chosen for a zone and a purpose, and you buy it where you live.

Placement follows direction rather than decoration — which corner, which room, at what height, and near what. The North-East, the ईशान्य (Ishanya), is treated differently from the South-West, and a stone that helps in a study may be wrong beside a bed.

Crystals are one of several non-structural tools used together: activated pyramids, colour, metal, sound, salt and light. Recommendations are usually given as part of a remedy plan rather than as a shopping list — see how they sit within residential Vastu.

06

How many crystals do you actually need?

Fewer than the internet suggests. Two or three stones placed thoughtfully do more than a shelf of twenty bought over a year of late-night scrolling.

A collection accumulated without purpose tends to become clutter, and clutter works against the calm the stones were meant to support. If you already own a drawer full, the useful exercise is to choose three and put the rest away, rather than to buy more.

Care is minimal: dust them, cleanse them occasionally, keep them out of harsh sun if they are prone to fading, and do not leave polished pieces where a child or a pet can swallow them.

07

What crystals cannot do

They cannot treat illness. Crystals are used here as part of a calming, intention-based practice that complements medical and psychological care and never replaces it. Do not delay seeing a doctor, and never stop prescribed medication because of a stone.

They cannot deliver outcomes. No mineral produces money, a marriage or a job, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling. Never place a stone in your mouth, and do not make water by soaking stones you cannot identify, since some minerals are genuinely toxic.

If you are going through a hard stretch emotionally, please speak to a professional where you live. In India, the free Tele-MANAS helpline is available 24×7 on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416). A crystal on a windowsill is a small comfort; it is not care.

08

When to ask for guidance

A reasonable time to ask is before buying rather than after — it saves money and prevents the drawer full of stones nobody uses.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar advises on crystal therapy at VastuKimaya, Andheri East, Mumbai, and remotely for clients in other cities and abroad, working from your floor plan and photographs. You source the stones locally; the guidance covers which ones and where.

Write to stayblessed@vastukimaya.com or message +91 70391 07512 with your city and time zone. The first consultation call is free, sessions are held in English, Hindi, Marathi or Gujarati, and remote work is a regular part of the practice.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do crystals have to come from India to work?

No. The tradition attaches meaning to the mineral and its placement, not to where it was purchased. Buying locally also avoids breakage, weight and customs questions at borders.

How can I tell if a crystal is dyed or fake?

Look for colour pooling in cracks, unnatural uniformity, low weight and a piece that warms quickly in the hand. Ask the seller to name the mineral and its origin.

Do I need to cleanse a crystal I bought online?

Yes. Cleanse any new stone before placing it — sunlight, moonlight, salt, incense smoke, or running water for hard stones. Keep selenite and softer stones away from water.

Can placement be advised without a visit?

Yes. Recommendations are made from your floor plan, compass readings and photographs, and you buy the stones where you live. Placement follows direction rather than décor.

How many crystals should I keep at home?

A small number placed with purpose. Large collections tend to become clutter, which works against the calm the stones were meant to support in the first place.

Are crystals safe around children and pets?

Keep small polished pieces out of reach, as they are a choking risk. Never put stones in the mouth or make water with minerals you cannot identify, since some are toxic.
