Vastu Consultant for Homes in Canada

Indian families in Canada live in detached homes with finished basements, in basement suites, and in condo towers in Toronto and Vancouver, through winters that keep windows shut for months. Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar reviews these homes on a site visit or online, from your floor plan, compass readings and photographs.

01

Does Vastu apply to a home in Canada?

Yes. The compass reads the same in Brampton or Surrey as in Mumbai, and the core placements hold: kitchen in the South-East, master bedroom in the South-West, mandir in the North-East, head towards South or East while sleeping, and the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) kept open.

What Canada adds is winter, basements and a great deal of condo living. Those shape how the principles are applied, which is why advice for a Canadian home sometimes looks different from advice for a flat in India. Vastu for NRI homes abroad sets out what transfers unchanged.

02

How does Vastu read a detached home or townhouse in Canada?

It starts with the entrance you actually use, which in winter is often not the front door. Many families come in through the garage into a mudroom or side hall full of boots, coats and salt from the driveway, while the formal front door stays closed until spring.

  • 01

    Keep the front door alive

Clear and light the front steps through the snow and use the door regularly, so the main entrance is not forgotten for half the year.

  • 02

    Tame the boot pile

Give winter boots and coats a closed cabinet or bench, and empty the salt tray often. A cluttered, wet entrance is the first thing a Vastu review notices.

  • 03

    Open-plan main floor

Kitchen, dining and family room usually flow together. Face East while cooking where you can, keep the sink and the range apart, and keep the middle of the main floor open.

  • 04

    Bedrooms upstairs

Give the South-West bedroom of the upper floor to the head of the household, and keep the North-East room light, perhaps as a study.

03

Is it all right to live in, or rent out, a basement suite?

Yes. A basement suite is not unsuitable in itself; what it needs is light, dry air and order. Classical Vastu prefers a basement under the North or East part of a house, but people live well in suites elsewhere when these basics are looked after.

If you live in one, keep the windows clean and unblocked, use bright, warm lighting, run a dehumidifier if the air feels damp, keep the North-East corner light and uncluttered, and sleep with your head towards South or East. If you rent yours out, keep the shared or side entrance tidy and well lit, and treat the suite's North-East as carefully as your own. Either way, the remedies are portable and need no building work.

04

What about condos in Toronto and Vancouver?

A condo is read as a complete home, however compact. Many are one-bedroom-plus-den units in glass towers, with an open kitchen along one wall and a balcony off the living room.

The den is often the most useful room in the plan: depending on where it falls, it can become a study facing East or North, or a quiet corner for the mandir if it lies in the North-East. Floor-to-ceiling glass brings light but also heat, glare and a feeling of exposure, so curtains, rugs and grounding furniture in the South-West matter. Condo rules set by the building limit what you can alter, which is why everything suggested is non-structural. Vastu for high-rise apartments covers lifts, upper floors and wind.

05

How do long Canadian winters change the advice?

They make light and fresh air the main work. With windows shut and heating running for months, a home can feel heavy and stale, and short days leave rooms on the North side dim for much of the year.

Open windows for a few minutes on milder days, keep bathroom and kitchen fans working, and add warm lamps in dark corners and on staircases. A fireplace is a fire element and sits most comfortably in the South-East; where it is elsewhere, it is balanced, not removed. In Vancouver the challenge is grey, wet winters rather than deep cold, so damp corners and mould need attention before any remedy is placed. Fresh air and light explains the principles.

06

Can you keep a mandir and light diyas safely in a Canadian home?

Yes, with the mandir in the North-East and some care with flame. Canadian homes have smoke alarms, and with windows sealed against the cold, smoke from a diya or incense has nowhere to go; condo buildings and leases may also restrict open flames.

Keep a real diya small, brief and supervised, open a window for a few minutes afterwards, and never cover or disable an alarm. Electric diyas are a calm alternative where flames are not allowed. Diwali often arrives with the first snow, so a lit, cleared front entrance becomes part of the welcome. Navratri garba and Ganesh Chaturthi gatherings at temples and community centres keep children connected; see celebrating Diwali abroad.

How do site visits and online sessions work from Canada, and which time suits you?

Dr. Kimaya travels to Canada for site visits, arranged on the free first call; the VastuKimaya office is in Andheri East, Mumbai. Online sessions are by video call, Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 7 pm IST, and early mornings or evenings in Canada fit inside those hours. For an online session you send a floor plan with North marked, compass readings from inside the front door and photographs of every room, including the basement; Dr. Kimaya studies them first and sends a written report after the call, the same report a site visit produces. India does not change its clocks, so check your slot again after Canada's clocks move in March and November.

  • 01

    Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal

9 h 30 min behind IST in summer, 10 h 30 min in winter. A start between about 6 and 7:30 am lands in the Indian late afternoon, and a Saturday morning is often easiest before the family's day begins.

  • 02

    Calgary and Edmonton

11 h 30 min behind in summer, 12 h 30 min in winter. Evenings work: from 9:30 pm in summer or 8:30 pm in winter, which is 9 am the next day in India.

  • 03

    Vancouver

12 h 30 min behind in summer, 13 h 30 min in winter. An evening from 8:30 pm in summer or 7:30 pm in winter is the next Indian morning. Friday and Sunday evenings work; Saturday evening is the Indian Sunday, when sessions are not held.

प्रश्न Questions

Common questions about Canada

Does Vastu work for a basement suite?

Yes. A basement suite is read like any home, with extra attention to light, dry air and order. Keep windows clear, lighting warm and bright, the North-East light and uncluttered, and sleep with your head towards South or East.

Our condo has a den but no spare room. Where should the mandir go?

In the North-East of the condo if possible. If the den lies there, it can hold a small mandir; if not, a clean shelf on the North-East side of the living area is enough. Avoid a wall shared with a bathroom.

Where should winter boots and coats go?

In a closed cabinet, bench or closet near the door you use, rather than in a heap at the entrance. Empty the salt tray and wipe the floor often, and keep the formal front door clear and lit as well.

What is the easiest time to book from Toronto?

An early morning. A session starting between about 6 and 7:30 am in Toronto falls in the Indian late afternoon, within the 9 am to 7 pm IST hours. Saturday mornings suit many families.

Can the session be held in Punjabi?

Sessions are held in English, Hindi, Marathi or Gujarati. Punjabi is not one of the session languages at present, so please mention your preferred language when you book and the most comfortable option can be agreed on the free first call.
