Vastu for High-Rise Apartments and Upper Floors

01

Does Vastu apply to high-rise apartments?

Yes, Vastu applies to high-rise apartments. Classical Vastu was written for houses built on the ground, but its principles — directions, elements, light, air and the balance of the वास्तु पुरुष मंडल (Vastu Purusha Mandala, the energy grid of a building) — adapt naturally to each flat within a tower.

In a high-rise, the flat you live in is your primary Vastu unit. The building, its entrance and its surroundings form the wider context. Both matter, but your own layout is where most of your day is spent and where most practical adjustments can be made.

02

Is living on a higher floor good or bad as per Vastu?

Living on a higher floor is neither good nor bad by itself in Vastu. What matters more is the flat's layout, entrance, light and how balanced its zones are.

Upper floors often bring real advantages: more daylight, better cross-ventilation, open views and less street noise. The considerations are different rather than negative — stronger winds, intense afternoon sun on West-facing glass and a feeling of distance from the ground for some people. Each of these has simple, non-structural remedies, which are covered below.

03

What should you check in the building before buying?

Check the building's entrance, the position of lifts and staircases, and what surrounds the tower. These shape the energy that reaches every flat.

  • 01

    Main gate and lobby

A clean, well-lit entrance on the North, East or North-East is generally favourable; other entrances are assessed by pada and can be balanced.

  • 02

    Lifts and staircases

Traditionally preferred in the South, West or South-West of the building rather than the centre or North-East.

  • 03

    Surroundings

Note nearby taller towers, flyovers, transmission towers or open plots, and which directions they are in.

  • 04

    Water tanks and podium

Overhead tanks are traditionally placed towards the South-West; underground tanks towards the North-East.

  • 05

    Overall shape

Square or rectangular building footprints are generally preferred over irregular ones.

04

What matters most inside a high-rise flat?

Inside the flat, the main door, kitchen, master bedroom, toilets and the centre matter most. These follow the same guidance as any home.

  • 01

    Main door

Checked by compass pada; North, East and North-East entries are generally favourable, and others have remedies.

  • 02

    Kitchen

South-East is ideal, North-West acceptable; cook facing East.

  • 03

    Master bedroom

South-West, for stability and grounding — especially valuable high above the ground.

  • 04

    Pooja area

    North-East, kept light and uncluttered.

  • 05

    Toilets

Avoid the North-East and the centre where possible; otherwise keep them clean, dry and closed.

  • 06

    Centre

The ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) should remain open and light.

05

How do you stay grounded on an upper floor?

Stay grounded on an upper floor by strengthening the Earth element, especially in the South-West. Some people living very high up describe a slightly unsettled, 'floating' feeling, and Vastu offers gentle ways to anchor the home.

  • 01

    Heavy furniture in the South-West

Place the bed, wardrobes or a solid cabinet along the South or West walls.

  • 02

    Earthy colours

Beige, sand, terracotta and warm browns suit the South-West.

  • 03

    Indoor plants

Healthy potted plants bring a living connection to soil and nature.

  • 04

    Natural materials

Wooden furniture, clay pots, jute rugs and stone accents feel grounding.

  • 05

    Crystals and pyramids

Grounding remedies, placed after a proper assessment, can support the Earth zone.

  • 06

    Barefoot time

Walking in the society garden or at the seaside reconnects you with the ground.

06

How do you manage wind, sun and glare at height?

Manage wind, sun and glare with sensible window treatments and balcony arrangements, because comfort is part of good Vastu. The Air element is naturally stronger at height, and full-height glass can make rooms hot and bright.

  • 01

    Strong winds

Use sturdy, secured planters and furniture on balconies, and sliding windows you can partly open.

  • 02

    West and South glass

Use light-filtering blinds or curtains to soften intense afternoon sun.

  • 03

    North and East glass

Keep these clearer in the morning to welcome gentle light.

  • 04

    Reflections

If a neighbouring glass tower reflects glare into your flat, sheer curtains help.

  • 05

    Safety

Keep balcony grills and child-safety nets in place, especially with young children.

07

Does the floor number matter in numerology?

Some families like to consider the floor and flat number through numerology, but it should never be the deciding factor. A simple method is to add the digits of the flat number; for flat 2403, 2 + 4 + 0 + 3 = 9.

Numerology looks at the energetic essence of a space, while Vastu looks at its physical layout. Together they offer a fuller picture, but location, structure, light, ventilation and your family's practical needs should always carry more weight. Where a number doesn't feel right, small adjustments such as the nameplate can be considered.

08

What if the flat's layout isn't ideal?

If the layout isn't ideal, use non-structural remedies rather than breaking walls — which in a high-rise society is rarely allowed anyway. Colour, metal strips, pyramids, crystals, mirrors, lighting, sound and salt therapy can balance zones without construction.

Start with the simplest steps: declutter, keep the North-East and centre light, ensure every bulb works, and arrange furniture so you sleep with your head towards the South or East and study or work facing East or North.

09

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consider consulting a Vastu expert before booking a flat in a tower, especially when comparing units on different floors or facing different directions, and when moving into a new high-rise home.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers site and flat selection guidance and room-by-room consultations for multi-storeyed buildings, with compass measurement on-site and non-structural remedies. Consultations are available across Mumbai — Andheri, Powai, Goregaon, Worli, Lower Parel, Thane and beyond — from the Andheri East office, or as a distant consultation using floor plans.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which floor is good as per Vastu in an apartment?

Vastu does not treat any floor as good or bad by itself. The flat's layout, entrance, light and zone balance matter far more than the floor number.

Does the building entrance affect my flat's Vastu?

Yes, the building entrance forms part of the wider context, but your own flat's main door and layout matter more for daily life. Both are considered in a full assessment.

How do I find directions in a high-rise flat?

Use a compass held flat near the centre of the flat, away from metal and electrical points, and take readings at two or three spots. Steel structures can affect phone compasses, so compare readings.

Is a flat facing a taller building bad as per Vastu?

It isn't bad, but a tall building close to the North or East can block morning light. Good lighting, light colours and mirrors on North or East walls can help.

Can I do Vastu corrections in a society flat without construction?

Yes, most corrections can be done without construction using colour, metal, pyramids, crystals, lighting and furniture placement. These suit society rules and rented flats.
