Reiki for Festive Fatigue: Resting and Resetting After Diwali

01

Why do people feel so tired after Diwali?

People feel tired after Diwali because the festival comes at the end of weeks of extra work, cleaning, shopping, cooking, hosting and travelling, followed by several late nights, and the body catches up once the adrenaline of the festival fades.

In Mumbai the load is particular. Deep-cleaning a flat while still going to work, guests arriving in a compact home, sweets and fried snacks at every visit, firecracker noise until late and smoky air for days afterwards all add up. For many families, one or two people carry most of it.

There is an emotional side as well. Family gatherings can be warm and tiring at once, someone may be missing from the table this year, and the quiet after a busy festival can feel flat. All of this is common, and for most people it settles with a few days of genuine rest.

02

Can Reiki help with festive fatigue and stress?

Reiki can help many people relax and rest more deeply, which is mostly what festive tiredness asks for. It is a gentle Japanese practice in which a practitioner rests their hands lightly on, or just above, a series of positions while you lie or sit fully clothed.

The idea is close to the Indian understanding of प्राण (prana, life energy): when it flows freely, a person feels more settled. Many people describe a session as deeply restful, and some fall asleep during it. Others feel nothing in particular, and that is normal too.

Reiki complements medical care and never replaces it. It does not treat exhaustion, illness or any mental-health condition, and it is not a reason to skip a check-up if something feels wrong.

03

What is a simple self-Reiki routine for the week after Diwali?

A simple routine is four hand positions held for two to three minutes each, about ten minutes in all, done at the same time every day for a week. Lie down in bed or sit comfortably, let your hands rest lightly and breathe normally.

Traditionally self-Reiki is practised after a Level 1 attunement. If you have not been attuned, the same positions still make a quiet resting-hands routine for relaxation. The full seven-position sequence is in self-Reiki: a simple daily routine.

  • 01

    1. Eyes

Palms cupped gently over closed eyes. A good first step after days of screens, lights and late nights.

  • 02

    2. Back of the head

Both hands cradling the base of the skull. Let the shoulders drop.

  • 03

    3. Heart

Both hands flat on the centre of the chest. Breathe a little more slowly than usual.

  • 04

    4. Lower abdomen

Hands below the navel. Stay here a little longer before you get up, especially after a week of rich food.

04

How do you reset the bedroom for better sleep after the festival?

Reset the bedroom by clearing out everything the festival left in it, washing the linen and making the room dark, quiet and screen-free again. During Diwali the bedroom often becomes the store for gift boxes, shopping bags, a guest mattress and spare lights.

In Vastu, निद्रा (nidra, sleep) is easiest in a room that feels settled. Our guide to Reiki for sleep and relaxation covers a bedtime practice in more detail.

  • 01

    Clear under the bed

Move boxes, bags and leftover decorations to a storeroom or a cupboard in the South-West or West, so the space under the bed is empty.

  • 02

    Take the fairy lights down

Remove festive lights from the bedroom, or at least switch them off at night. Keep the room dark.

  • 03

    Fresh linen, fresh air

Wash bedsheets and pillow covers. On smoky days keep windows shut, and air the room once the air clears.

  • 04

Head towards the South or East

If guests moved the beds around, set yours back so you sleep with your head towards the South or East.

  • 05

    Phones out of reach

Charge the phone outside the room or across it. Festival photographs can wait until the morning.

05

What does a gentle reset week after Diwali look like?

A gentle reset week has early nights, simple meals, daylight, and the post-festival work shared out rather than left to one person. Bhai Dooj falls on Tuesday 10 or Wednesday 11 November depending on your panchang, so the days that follow are a natural time to slow down.

The Diwali 2026 Vastu calendar covers winding the festival down at home. What follows is about winding yourself down.

  • 01

    Share the clean-up

Make a list of what is left, from returning borrowed vessels to taking down lights, and divide it. The person who did most of the preparation should not also do most of the clearing up.

  • 02

    Two early nights

Plan at least two nights that week with no visits, no screens late and the lights off at a fixed time.

  • 03

    Simple food

After days of sweets and fried snacks, plain home-cooked meals and enough water usually feel welcome. Follow your doctor's advice if you have diabetes or another condition.

  • 04

    Daylight and a walk

A short walk in morning light, once the smoke has cleared, helps many people feel more awake through the day.

  • 05

    A quiet minute

Light a diya in the North-East for a few minutes in the evening and simply sit with it. A moment of शांति (shanti, peace) at the end of the day.

06

When should you see a doctor about post-Diwali tiredness?

See a doctor if the tiredness does not lift after a week or two of ordinary rest, or straight away if it comes with any of the signs below. Reiki, rest and a tidy bedroom are not a substitute for a medical check, and please never stop or change a medicine without your doctor's advice.

  • 01

    Breathing

Breathlessness, wheezing or a cough that lingers after the firecracker smoke, especially if you have asthma or a heart or lung condition.

  • 02

Chest pain, fainting or sudden weakness

Treat these as an emergency. In India call 112.

  • 03

    Health conditions

If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or another condition and the festival routine has disturbed your readings or your medicines.

  • 04

    Sleep

If sleep stays broken for more than a couple of weeks, or you wake exhausted however long you sleep.

  • 05

    Mood

If you feel low, lose interest in things you usually enjoy, or have thoughts that frighten you.

07

Where can you get support if the low feeling stays?

Talk to someone you trust and to a professional, because a low mood that lasts beyond the festival deserves proper care, not just rest. Festive seasons can bring up loneliness, grief or family strain, and none of that is a failing.

If you are struggling, please reach out to a mental-health professional. In India you can call the free Tele-MANAS helpline on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416), available 24×7. If the tiredness feels like it has been building for months rather than weeks, our article on burnout recovery may also help.

08

When to book a Reiki session

Book a session when resting on your own is hard, when the festival has left you wound up rather than tired, or when the home itself feels heavy after weeks of guests and activity.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers Reiki healing and Reiki Vastu at VastuKimaya in Andheri East, Mumbai, at homes across the city, and as distance Reiki for clients elsewhere in India or abroad, which suits anyone still travelling back after the holiday. Sessions are calm and fully clothed, and Reiki is always offered alongside, never instead of, the care of your doctor.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why do I feel exhausted after Diwali?

Because the festival follows weeks of extra cleaning, shopping, cooking, hosting and late nights, and the body catches up once it ends. Smoky air and disturbed sleep add to it. For most people it settles with a few days of real rest.

Can Reiki help with stress and tiredness?

Many people find Reiki deeply relaxing, which can support rest after a stressful period. It is not a treatment for exhaustion, illness or any mental-health condition, and it complements, never replaces, medical care.

How long does it take to recover from festival tiredness?

Usually a few days of proper rest, early nights and simple meals. If tiredness does not lift after a week or two, or comes with breathlessness, chest pain or low mood, see a doctor.

Can I do self-Reiki without an attunement?

Traditionally self-Reiki follows a Level 1 attunement. Without one, you can still use the same hand positions as a quiet resting-hands routine for relaxation.

Is Reiki safe if I am taking medicines?

Reiki is gentle and non-invasive and is used alongside medical care. Keep taking your prescribed medicines, keep your appointments, and tell your doctor you are using Reiki. No practitioner should ask you to stop a medicine.

Can I have distance Reiki while travelling after Diwali?

Yes. Distance Reiki is arranged at an agreed time and you simply rest quietly wherever you are, whether at a relative's home or back in another city.
