Solar Panel Direction as per Vastu: Terraces, Bungalows and Society Rooftops
Planning rooftop solar for a bungalow or society terrace? How solar panels, the inverter, the battery and a solar water heater fit with Vastu, while the North-East stays light.

01
Which direction should solar panels face as per Vastu?
Solar panels should face roughly South, tilted towards the southern sky, and sit on the South, West or South-West part of the terrace as per Vastu. Here the solar engineer and the Vastu consultant arrive at the same answer from different starting points.
Classical Vastu texts say nothing about solar panels, because they were written long before such technology existed. Practitioners today apply the old principles of direction, weight and the पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements) to a new object: a raised, fixed structure that gathers the energy of सूर्य (Surya, the sun).
02
Why do solar output and Vastu agree on the South?
Solar output and Vastu agree on the South because India lies north of the equator, so the sun travels across the southern sky for most of the year, and Vastu already prefers heavier, taller structures towards the South and West.
A panel tilted towards the South catches that light for longer. Meanwhile, Vastu treats नैऋत्य (Nairutya, the South-West) as the Earth zone, meant to be the heaviest and highest part of a building, and keeps the North and East lighter so that morning light and air can enter. A mounting frame along the southern and western parapets fits both ideas and leaves the open part of the terrace in the North-East.
Your installer may still suggest a different angle after a shade study of your roof. That technical judgement comes first; Vastu then helps you choose between layouts that work, as our article on Vastu and science explains.
03
Is the North-East of the terrace suitable for solar panels?
The North-East of the terrace is ideally kept free of solar panels, because Vastu keeps this corner the lightest, lowest and most open part of the building. It is ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East), linked with Water, clarity and prayer, as our guide to the sacred North-East corner describes.
Panels are far lighter than a water tank, so this is a softer concern than a heavy tank or a room built in the North-East. If it is the only shade-free area on a small roof, a working system still matters. In that case:
01
Keep it low
Ask for a low-profile frame rather than a tall, elevated structure in this corner.
02
Leave the corner itself open
Start the array a little away from the exact North-East corner and keep a clear walkway there.
03
Keep it clean
Store no junk, old frames or broken modules underneath the panels.
04
Keep the South-West heavier
Make sure the South-West of the terrace still holds the heaviest elements, such as the overhead water tank.
04
Where should the solar inverter and battery be kept?
The solar inverter and battery are best placed in the South-East of the home, or the South-East of the room they sit in, which is आग्नेय (Agneya, the South-East), the zone of Agni, the fire deity. Equipment that carries heat and current is read as Fire, and the North-West is the accepted second choice.
Our article on Agneya, the fire zone in the South-East explains this zone, and our guide to electric meter, inverter and DB box placement covers the rest of the electrical set-up.
01
Away from the North-East and the mandir
Keep the inverter and battery out of the North-East and away from the pooja area.
02
Not beside the bed
Avoid the bedroom, especially a South-West master bedroom kept calm for rest.
03
Dry and ventilated
Follow the installer's advice on ventilation and clearances, away from the sink, water tank or bathroom wall, on a stand that keeps mopping and monsoon water away.
05
Do solar panels on a society terrace affect the flats below?
Solar panels on a society terrace have very little effect on the Vastu of the flats below, because each flat's Vastu is read mainly from its own layout, entrance and zones. A rooftop array is a shared building service, like the lift machine room or the overhead tank.
For the building, the same principles apply: panels along the South and West, the North-East of the terrace open, and the inverter panel in the South-East where possible. These decisions belong to the managing committee, a structural engineer and a licensed installer. Upper-floor residents can ask that waterproofing is protected and cables run in proper conduits.
06
Does a solar water heater follow the same Vastu rules?
A solar water heater follows broadly the same rules: place it in the South-West, South or West of the terrace, with its collectors facing the southern sky, and keep it out of the North-East.
Unlike flat panels, a solar water heater carries an insulated tank full of water, so its weight belongs where Vastu prefers overhead water storage. Because it heats water, some practitioners also accept the South-East. On a bungalow roof, keep it away from the centre, which sits above the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) and is ideally kept clear. Check the pipes every season, since a dripping hot-water line soon shows up as a damp patch below.
07
What practical checks come before Vastu?
Safety and structure come before any direction: a licensed electrician or qualified solar installer must design, install and connect the system, and the roof must be checked for load and waterproofing.
01
Licensed professionals only
All wiring, earthing, inverter and grid connections are done by a licensed electrician or qualified installer, never as a do-it-yourself job.
02
Structural check
Older bungalow roofs and society terraces should be checked by an engineer before frames are fixed.
03
Waterproofing
Fixings must not puncture the terrace waterproofing without proper sealing, or the monsoon will find the gap.
04
Approvals and schemes
Permissions, metering arrangements and any government schemes change from time to time, so check the current details with your installer and your electricity supplier.
05
Clean and well drained
Clean the panels as the installer advises, and let rain and washing water flow to outlets on the North or East side, as Vastu prefers for drainage.
08
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert when you are designing a new bungalow roof, planning a society-wide solar project, or when the only usable space for panels, a water heater or the inverter falls in the North-East or the centre. Frames, tanks and equipment are far easier to place well together at the planning stage.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya reviews terraces, bungalows and flats with on-site compass readings across Mumbai from her Andheri East office, or through distant consultation using roof plans and photographs. Her remedies are non-structural, and every electrical and structural decision stays with your licensed installer and engineer.
Questions
Frequently asked
Which direction should solar panels face as per Vastu?
Solar panels should face roughly South as per Vastu, tilted towards the southern sky, and sit on the South, West or South-West part of the terrace. This matches how panels are usually installed for output in India and keeps heavier structures where Vastu prefers them.
Can solar panels be installed in the North-East of the terrace?
It is better to keep the North-East of the terrace free of panels, because Vastu keeps this corner light and open. If it is the only shade-free space, use a low frame, leave the exact corner clear and keep the area clean.
Where should the solar inverter and battery be kept?
The solar inverter and battery suit the South-East of the home, the Fire zone, with the North-West as the second choice. Keep them dry, ventilated and away from the North-East, the mandir and the bed, and follow the installer's safety advice.
Do solar panels on a society terrace affect the flats below?
Solar panels on a society terrace have very little effect on individual flats, because each flat's Vastu is read from its own layout. The committee can still follow the same principles: panels towards the South and West, and the North-East kept open.
Does a solar water heater follow the same Vastu rules?
Yes, broadly. A solar water heater is heavy because of its water tank, so it suits the South-West, South or West of the terrace, with collectors facing the southern sky. Avoid the North-East and the centre of a bungalow roof.
