01
Does bedroom colour really matter in Vastu?
Yes, bedroom colour matters in Vastu because the bedroom is where the body rests, and colour is one of the strongest things the eye takes in before sleep. A calm shade supports a calm room.
It helps to be honest about the source. Classical Vastu texts speak mainly about directions, proportions and the पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements). Paint shade charts came later, as practitioners matched each direction's element to a family of colours. So treat the lists below as gentle guidance, not strict law.
02
Which colour suits a bedroom in each direction?
The colour that suits a bedroom is the one linked with the element of the direction it sits in. First find where the bedroom lies from the centre of your home, using a compass or our direction finder, then pick a light shade from that family.
01
South-West bedroom
Beige, sand, cream and light brown. This is the Earth zone, traditionally linked with stability.
02
South bedroom
Soft coral, light pink, peach or warm cream. Keep the red family pale.
03
West bedroom
White, off-white, light grey or a hint of soft blue.
04
North-West bedroom
White, ivory and pale grey, in keeping with the Air element.
05
North bedroom
Light green or a pale, watery blue.
06
East bedroom
Light green, soft sky blue or white, for a fresh morning feel.
07
North-East bedroom
White, cream or very pale yellow. Keep this zone light and uncluttered.
08
South-East bedroom
Cream with small touches of peach or pink. This is the Fire zone, so avoid adding strong reds and oranges on large walls.
03
Which colours suit the master bedroom?
Soft earthy shades suit the master bedroom, which Vastu traditionally places in the नैऋत्य (Nairutya, the South-West). Beige, sand, warm cream, light brown and muted peach are all said to support rest and a settled feeling.
If your master bedroom is in another direction, follow the direction list above and then warm it up a little. A pale pink cushion or a peach bedspread adds warmth for a couple without changing the walls.
04
Which colours suit a children's bedroom?
Light green, soft blue and pale yellow suit a children's bedroom, because they feel fresh without being loud. Vastu commonly places children in the West or North-West, where white and off-white walls also work well.
Children often ask for bright colours. Let them choose, and use the bright shade on one small area such as a pin-board, a bookshelf back or a rug. Very busy cartoon walls and strong red or orange on all four sides can make a small room feel restless at bedtime. Change gently, with no pressure and no fear.
05
Which colours suit a guest bedroom?
White, ivory, light grey and pale green suit a guest bedroom, which is often placed in the North-West. These neutral shades suit most visitors and keep the room easy to maintain.
A guest room is used by different people for short stays, so avoid anything too personal or too dark.
06
Which colours are usually avoided in a bedroom?
Dark red, black, charcoal grey and deep navy are usually avoided as main bedroom wall colours. On large surfaces they absorb light and can make the room feel heavy or closed in.
This is not a ban. A dark headboard, a maroon throw or a black picture frame is perfectly fine. The simple rule is light on the walls and deeper shades in small amounts. For the wider picture of colour in every room, see our guide to colour therapy at home.
07
What can you do in a rented flat where walls cannot be painted?
In a rented flat you can bring the right colour in through fabric and light instead of paint. Bedsheets, curtains and lamps together cover more of what you see than you might expect.
01
Bedsheets and covers
The bed is the largest object in the room. Choose sheets in the shade your direction calls for.
02
Curtains
Full-length curtains act like a coloured wall. Pick beige for the South-West, white or ivory for the West and North-West, light green for the North and East.
03
Lamps
A warm yellow bedside lamp softens cold white walls at night. Avoid harsh blue-white tube light near the bed.
04
Rug or dhurrie
An earthy rug beside the bed grounds a room with glossy tiles.
08
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert before repainting the whole home, when a bedroom sits in a difficult zone, or when sleep stays poor even after simple changes. Colour supports rest, but it does not replace a doctor's advice for ongoing sleep or health problems.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya, based in Andheri East, Mumbai, studies the compass direction of every room before suggesting colours. Questions
Frequently asked
Which colour is good for a bedroom as per Vastu?
Light, soft shades are good for a bedroom as per Vastu. Beige, cream and peach suit South-West and South rooms, light green and pale blue suit North and East rooms, and white or off-white suits West and North-West rooms. The exact choice depends on where the bedroom sits from the centre of the home.
Can I paint my bedroom red?
Red is usually avoided as a main bedroom wall colour in Vastu because it is linked with the Fire element and feels stimulating. You can still enjoy it in small amounts. A red cushion, a maroon throw or a single painting brings warmth without making the room feel restless at night.
Is white a good colour for a bedroom?
Yes, white is a good bedroom colour, especially for rooms in the West, North-West and North-East. Pure white can feel cold under tube light, so many people choose off-white or ivory instead and add warmth with curtains, wooden furniture and a yellow bedside lamp.
Which colour suits a couple's bedroom?
Soft earthy and warm shades suit a couple's bedroom. Beige, warm cream, light peach and pale pink are traditionally said to support rest and closeness. Keep the walls light and bring the warmer shade in through bedsheets and cushions. Very dark or very bright walls are usually avoided.
Does the ceiling colour matter in a bedroom?
Yes, a little. A white or very light ceiling is generally preferred, because it reflects light and makes the room feel taller. Dark or heavily patterned ceilings directly over the bed can feel pressing when you lie down. In low Mumbai flats, a plain white ceiling is the simplest choice.
