Agneya: The Fire Zone in the South-East
The South-East, or Agneya Kon, is Vastu's zone of fire, energy and nourishment. What belongs here, what to keep away, and simple remedies when your flat's South-East isn't ideal.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
What is Agneya Kon in Vastu?
Agneya Kon is the South-East corner of a home, office or plot. The name comes from आग्नेय कोण (Agneya Kon, the corner of Agni), because this direction is presided over by अग्नि (Agni, the fire deity) in the वास्तु पुरुष मंडल (Vastu Purusha Mandala).
In the five-element framework of पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements), the South-East holds Fire. The other elements have their own corners — Water in the North-East, Air in the North-West, Earth in the South-West and Space in the centre. Balance between all five is the heart of Vastu, and the South-East is where warmth, transformation and energy are meant to live. To locate it, stand near the centre of your flat with a compass held flat and find the corner between the South and East walls.
02
What does the South-East zone represent?
The South-East represents energy, warmth, transformation and vitality. Fire cooks food, gives light and turns raw materials into something useful, so this zone is traditionally linked with nourishment, confidence, drive and the flow of money.
01
Health and digestion
Through its link with the kitchen and cooking.
02
Cash flow
Fire is associated with activity and circulation, including income and expenses.
03
Energy and enthusiasm
A balanced South-East is associated with motivation and drive.
04
Warmth in relationships
Fire in balance brings warmth; out of balance it is associated with heated tempers.
03
Why is the kitchen ideal in the South-East?
The kitchen is ideal in the South-East because cooking involves fire, and placing the stove in the Fire zone keeps the element where it naturally belongs. The North-West is the accepted alternative when the South-East is not available.
Within the kitchen, place the gas stove in the South-East part of the platform so that you cook facing East. The East is associated with the rising sun and good health. Keep the sink, which represents water, at a comfortable distance from the stove rather than directly beside it, and ideally towards the North-East side of the kitchen.
04
What else suits the South-East zone?
Anything associated with heat, electricity or energy suits the South-East. In modern homes and offices, this makes it a natural place for many appliances.
01
Electrical equipment
Inverter, electricity meter, main switchboard or UPS.
02
Appliances
Microwave, oven, toaster and geyser, where layout allows.
03
In offices
Pantry, electrical room, server or generator area.
04
Lighting
A warm lamp or a well-lit corner supports the Fire element.
05
Colours
Warm shades such as soft orange, peach, pink or light red, used in moderation.
05
What should be avoided in the South-East?
Large water elements and heavy clutter are traditionally avoided in the South-East, because water and fire oppose each other. None of these are reasons for worry; each has simple remedies.
01
Water storage
Overhead tanks, underground sumps or borewells are ideally located elsewhere.
02
Aquariums and fountains
These suit the North or North-East better.
03
Dark, damp corners
A dark, neglected South-East is associated with low energy.
04
Heavy blue or black décor
Colours linked with water can dampen the zone's fire.
05
Master bedroom
Traditionally, the South-West is preferred for couples, as the South-East's fiery energy is associated with restlessness.
06
What if a toilet or bedroom is in the South-East?
A toilet or bedroom in the South-East can be balanced with simple, non-structural remedies. Most Mumbai flats have some compromise, and there is no need to demolish or move rooms.
For a South-East toilet, keep it dry, clean and well ventilated, with the door closed and the exhaust fan working. Warm-coloured accessories and good lighting can support the Fire element. For a South-East bedroom, choose calm, warm colours rather than bright red, sleep with the head towards the South or East, and keep electronics to a minimum near the bed. A consultant may also suggest colour, metal, pyramid or crystal remedies after studying the whole layout.
07
How can you strengthen the South-East zone?
You can strengthen the South-East with light, warmth, cleanliness and purposeful use. These steps take very little time.
01
Keep it bright
Replace fused or flickering bulbs quickly and add a warm lamp if the corner is dark.
02
Light a diya
A diya or lamp lit safely in the kitchen or South-East corner at dusk is a traditional practice.
03
Keep the stove clean
A clean, well-maintained gas stove reflects respect for Agni.
04
Remove leaks
Fix dripping taps or seepage in this zone promptly.
05
Declutter
Clear old appliances and broken electrical items that no longer work.
08
How does Agneya Kon apply to offices and shops?
In offices and shops, the South-East suits the pantry, electrical room, server cabinet, generator and accounts-related activity. Keeping electrical systems here is both practical and aligned with the Fire element.
For a restaurant or café, the South-East is the natural place for the kitchen and tandoor. For a factory, boilers, furnaces and heat-based machinery traditionally sit in the South-East. Keeping this zone well maintained, safe and orderly matters as much as its direction — fire safety always comes first.
09
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consider consulting a Vastu expert if your kitchen, water tank or bedroom sits in an unexpected zone, or if you are planning a renovation or buying a flat and want to understand the South-East before you decide.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar maps each zone with on-site compass measurement and suggests non-structural remedies such as colour, metal, pyramids, crystals and Reiki Vastu. Consultations are available on-site across Mumbai from the Andheri East office, or as a distant consultation using floor plans and photographs.
