Ishanya: The Sacred North-East Corner

01

What is Ishanya kon in Vastu?

Ishanya kon is the North-East corner of a home, plot or room, written ईशान्य कोण (Ishanya kon, the North-East corner). It is considered the most sacred zone in Vastu Shastra.

The name comes from ईश (Isha), the lord, a form of Shiva, who presides over this direction. Classical Vastu texts treat the North-East as the zone where auspicious energy first enters a space, which is why it is kept pure, light and open.

02

Why is the North-East considered sacred?

The North-East is considered sacred because it combines the qualities of two favourable directions — the North of Kubera, linked with prosperity, and the East of Indra and Surya, linked with growth and the rising sun. The meeting point of these energies is seen as the gateway for positive energy.

In the वास्तु पुरुष मंडल (Vastu Purusha Mandala), the head of the Vastu Purusha lies in the North-East. Just as we keep the head clean and unburdened, this corner is kept light, clean and uncluttered. It is also linked with the water element in the पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements), representing clarity and flow.

03

What should be placed in the North-East corner?

The North-East suits activities and objects that are light, pure and reflective. Ideal uses include:

  • 01

    Pooja room or mandir

The North-East is the traditional place for the home mandir, with you facing East or North while praying.

  • 02

    Meditation or quiet corner

A simple mat or chair for stillness, prayer or reading.

  • 03

    Water

Underground water tanks, borewells, a small fountain or an aquarium — kept clean and well maintained.

  • 04

    Openness and light

Windows, a balcony, a light-filled living area or the main entrance in the North-East pada.

  • 05

    Plants

Tulsi and healthy, small green plants that do not block the light.

04

What should be avoided in Ishanya kon?

Avoid anything heavy, dirty or fiery in the North-East. The most common defects are:

  • 01

    Toilets

A toilet in the North-East is treated as a significant defect.

  • 02

    Kitchen

Fire in the zone of water creates an imbalance of elements; the kitchen suits the South-East.

  • 03

    Heavy furniture and storage

Wardrobes, lofts, storerooms and heavy almirahs.

  • 04

    Clutter and dustbins

Shoe racks, old newspapers, broken items and dustbins.

  • 05

    Staircases and overhead tanks

These add weight to the North-East and are better placed in the South or West.

  • 06

    Master bedroom

The couple's bedroom suits the South-West rather than the North-East.

05

Why is the North-East often a problem in Mumbai flats?

In compact Mumbai flats, the North-East is often occupied by a toilet, kitchen or utility area simply because of the builder's layout and plumbing, not by choice. A cut or missing North-East corner in an irregularly shaped flat is also common.

This is not a reason for fear. The first step is to confirm, with a proper compass reading from the centre of the flat, whether the defect is truly in the North-East. Then remedies can be chosen for what is actually there.

06

What remedies help a North-East defect?

North-East defects are balanced with non-structural remedies, starting with cleanliness and lightness. Practical steps include:

  • 01

    Clean and declutter

Remove everything heavy or unused from the corner.

  • 02

    Light colours

White, cream, light yellow or pale blue on the North-East walls.

  • 03

    Toilet habits

Keep a North-East toilet spotless, closed and ventilated, with a bowl of sea salt changed regularly, and use it less where there is another option.

  • 04

    Focused remedies

Activated pyramids, crystals such as Clear Quartz, metal strips or colour corrections, chosen after assessment.

  • 05

    Daily prayer or a diya

Where the corner is available, a small lamp or a quiet prayer each day keeps the zone active.

07

How can you honour the North-East in daily life?

Honour the North-East with small daily habits: open its windows in the morning, keep it spotless, and spend a few minutes there in stillness or prayer. A short chant such as ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः (Om Shanti Shanti Shanti — peace, peace, peace) suits the calm nature of the zone.

Even a single shelf with a diya, a small idol or a bowl of fresh water can honour the corner in a small room. The intention is to keep this part of the home clear and peaceful.

08

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consult a Vastu expert when your North-East has a toilet, kitchen, staircase or cut, when you are choosing a flat, or when you are unsure where the North-East of an irregular home falls. Correct measurement matters more here than anywhere else.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar measures homes with a compass on-site across Mumbai from her Andheri East office, and offers distant consultations using floor plans and photographs. Her remedies are non-structural, with a written report and follow-up.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which god rules the North-East direction in Vastu?

The North-East is ruled by Isha, a form of Lord Shiva, which is why it is called Ishanya. It is considered the most sacred direction in Vastu.

Can the kitchen be in the North-East?

A kitchen in the North-East is generally avoided because fire does not suit the zone of water. If it already exists, use light colours, keep it very clean and get remedies suggested after assessment.

Is a North-East entrance good as per Vastu?

A North-East entrance is generally considered favourable in Vastu, provided it falls in an auspicious pada. Keep it bright, clean and uncluttered.

Can I keep a water tank in the North-East?

An underground water tank or sump in the North-East is considered favourable. Overhead tanks, which add weight, are better placed in the South-West.

What colour is suitable for the North-East corner?

Light colours such as white, cream, light yellow and pale blue suit the North-East. Avoid dark, heavy colours in this zone.
