Electric Meter, Inverter and DB Box Placement as per Vastu

01

Which direction is right for the electric meter as per Vastu?

The South-East is the right direction for the electric meter as per Vastu, because it is the zone of अग्नि (Agni, the fire deity) and the Fire element, where electrical equipment is traditionally placed. The North-West is the commonly accepted second choice.

This applies to a bungalow or row house, where you may choose where the meter board goes, and to a meter cabinet inside your own flat. The meter, main switch and distribution board usually sit together, so the same direction suits all three.

02

Why does electrical equipment belong in the South-East?

Electrical equipment belongs in the South-East because electricity carries heat, light and energy, which Vastu reads as Fire, and आग्नेय (Agneya, the South-East) is the home of that element. Our article on Agneya, the fire zone in the South-East explains the zone in depth.

Classical texts did not know about meters or inverters, so this is a modern application of element logic rather than an old rule. वायव्य (Vayavya, the North-West), the zone of Air, is the second choice because air supports fire. A quick map:

  • 01

    South-East

The first choice for the meter, DB box, inverter, battery and UPS.

  • 02

    North-West

    An acceptable second choice.

  • 03

    South or West

Workable when the South-East is not available, especially for a heavy battery.

  • 04

    North-East

Avoid where you can, since this Water zone is kept light and calm; balance it when you cannot.

  • 05

    Centre

Keep the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) free of heavy equipment.

03

Can the electric meter be near the main door?

Yes, the electric meter can be near the main door, and in many Mumbai flats and bungalows it is, because the supply company needs easy access to read it. What matters is that it does not crowd the entrance, which Vastu treats as the mouth of the home.

  • 01

    To one side

Keep the meter or DB box beside the door, not directly above it or in the path of the door as it opens.

  • 02

    Closed and neat

A closed cabinet with a clean cover looks far calmer than exposed wires at eye level.

  • 03

    Prefer the South-East side

On a bungalow gate or entrance wall, place the meter on the South-East side where the supply company allows.

  • 04

    Keep the threshold clear

Do not pile shoes, brooms or cartons around the meter; keep the entrance open and bright.

04

Where should the DB box be placed inside a flat?

The DB box, or distribution board, is ideally placed in the South-East of the flat or of the room it sits in, with the North-West next. Builders usually fix it near the entrance or in a passage, and it is rarely sensible to move it just for Vastu.

If your DB box is already fixed elsewhere, work with it:

  • 01

    Keep it reachable

Never block the board with furniture or seal it behind panelling. It must be quick to reach in an emergency.

  • 02

    Label every switch

A labelled board is calmer to live with and safer when something trips.

  • 03

    Keep the mandir elsewhere

Place the mandir on another wall rather than directly below or beside the DB box.

  • 04

    Mind your compass

Meters and DB boards disturb a compass needle, so take readings a little away from them.

05

Where should the inverter and battery be kept at home?

The inverter and battery are best placed in the South-East of the home, or the South-East corner of a utility area or store, with the North-West as an acceptable alternative. The same thinking places routers and chargers in the South-East, as our smart home Vastu guide explains.

  • 01

    Dry and ventilated

Keep the unit in a dry, ventilated spot with the clearances the manufacturer and electrician advise.

  • 02

    Away from water

In a utility area, keep it apart from the washing machine and taps; our utility area guide covers that space.

  • 03

    Off the floor

A sturdy stand keeps mopping water and monsoon seepage away, and out of children's reach.

  • 04

    Not hidden away

Avoid placing the inverter under a bed, behind the mandir or inside a closed wardrobe.

06

Is an inverter in the North-East a problem?

An inverter in the North-East is not ideal, but it is not a cause for worry; it is one of the most common compromises in Mumbai flats and it can be balanced. Vastu keeps the North-East light, clean and calm, so a heavy, humming electrical unit sits uneasily there.

If a licensed electrician can shift the inverter to the South-East or North-West with safe wiring, that is the simplest fix. If not, keep the area around it clear, clean and well lit, stack nothing on the unit, and keep the rest of the North-East open and light. A consultant may suggest simple non-structural balancing, such as colour or pyramid remedies, after studying the whole layout. The same approach works for a DB box or meter cabinet in the North-East.

07

What can be done if the society meter room is in the wrong zone?

If the society meter room is in the North-East or another less favoured zone, there is little to worry about, because your home's Vastu is read mainly from the flat itself. Meter rooms are placed by the building's design and the supply company's requirements, and they serve every flat equally.

Focus on what you control: your own DB box, inverter and wiring inside the flat. At the building level, keep the meter room clean, dry, labelled and free of junk, which matters for safety too. During repairs or redevelopment, the committee can raise its position with the architect. Our guide to EV charger and parking Vastu shows how a similar shared service is handled calmly.

08

What safety rules come before Vastu?

Safety comes before every direction: any change to meters, boards, inverters or wiring must be made by a licensed electrician, never as a do-it-yourself job. No Vastu benefit is worth an electrical risk.

  • 01

    Licensed electrician

Shifting a DB box, adding an inverter line, earthing and new sockets are all jobs for a licensed electrician.

  • 02

The meter belongs to the supplier

The meter is usually the property of the electricity supply company, so moving it goes through them. Your electrician can guide you.

  • 03

    Rooftop solar

If you are adding solar, the installer plans the inverter location with the supply; see our solar panel Vastu guide.

  • 04

    Warning signs

A burning smell, a warm switch, sparking or frequent tripping means switch off and call the electrician. Never overload extension boards near the DB box or inverter.

09

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consult a Vastu expert when you are fitting out a new flat or building a bungalow, so the electrician can route the meter, board and inverter well from the start, or when every available spot seems to fall in the North-East or the centre.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya maps each zone with on-site compass measurement across Mumbai from her Andheri East office, or reviews floor plans and photographs in a distant consultation. Her residential Vastu remedies are non-structural and portable, and all electrical work stays with your licensed electrician.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which direction is right for the electric meter as per Vastu?

The South-East is the right direction for the electric meter as per Vastu, because it is the Fire zone linked with electricity. The North-West is the second choice. Keep the meter out of the North-East and the centre where you can.

Where should the inverter and battery be kept at home?

Keep the inverter and battery in the South-East of the home or utility area, with the North-West as an alternative, in a dry, ventilated spot on a stand, away from water, the mandir and the bed.

Can the electric meter be near the main door?

Yes, a meter near the main door is common and acceptable. Keep it to one side in a closed, neat cabinet, not directly above the door or in its path, and keep the area around it clear and bright.

Is an inverter in the North-East a problem?

An inverter in the North-East is not ideal but is no cause for worry. Ask a licensed electrician whether it can move safely; if not, keep the area clean, lit and uncluttered, and ask a consultant about balancing remedies.

What can be done if the society meter room is in the wrong zone?

Very little needs to be done for your flat, because its Vastu is read mainly from the flat itself. Focus on your own DB box and inverter, keep the meter room clean and safe, and raise its position during any redevelopment.
