When is Dhanteras in 2026?
According to most panchangs, Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November 2026, the day after Vasu Baras and two days before Lakshmi Puja. The Trayodashi tithi begins in the late morning of 6 November, so the evening of the 6th, when the puja and the Yama Deepam are done, falls within it.
In Maharashtra the day is called धनत्रयोदशी (Dhanatrayodashi, the thirteenth day of wealth); elsewhere it is Dhanteras or Dhanvantari Trayodashi. Evening timings vary from city to city, so confirm the muhurat for Mumbai, or wherever you are, with a local panchang or your family priest.
02
What is the significance of Dhanteras?
The significance of Dhanteras is that it places health and wealth side by side at the start of Diwali. Dhan means wealth and teras the thirteenth day, but the day honours Dhanvantari, associated with healing, as much as it honours Lakshmi and Kubera.
A familiar Hindi saying puts the order clearly: पहला सुख निरोगी काया (pehla sukh nirogi kaya, the first happiness is a healthy body). Prosperity is welcomed on Dhanteras, but it comes second. A household that keeps this order in mind tends to mark the day calmly rather than as a shopping deadline.
For many families the day is also about readiness. The home has been cleaned, the puja corner set up on Vasu Baras, and now something durable and useful is brought in. What to buy, and where to keep it, is covered in Dhanteras: where to keep what you buy; this article is about why the day matters.
03
Who is Dhanvantari, and why is he worshipped on Dhanteras?
Dhanvantari is worshipped on Dhanteras because tradition holds that he appeared on this day from the churning of the ocean, the Samudra Manthan, carrying a pot of amrit. He is regarded as the physician of the gods and is closely associated with Ayurveda.
Many families, and many practitioners of Ayurveda, offer a simple prayer to Dhanvantari on Dhanteras evening for the health of the household. It is also a sensible reminder to attend to practical things: book the check-up you have been postponing, refill prescriptions, and look in on elderly relatives.
Prayer and Vastu can bring calm and intention to a home, but they complement and do not replace medical care. If anyone in the family is unwell, please follow the advice of your doctor.
04
How are Lakshmi and Kubera honoured on Dhanteras?
Lakshmi and Kubera are honoured on Dhanteras with a small evening puja, often with a new coin, vessel or account book placed before them. In many tellings Lakshmi, too, emerged from the Samudra Manthan, which is one reason she is worshipped at the start of Diwali as well as on the main night.
Kubera is the guardian of the North in Vastu, which is why a locker or cupboard holding valuables traditionally opens towards the north. If you are organising that cupboard this week, locker and safe direction at home explains the arrangement. The larger Lakshmi Puja comes two days later, on 8 November.
05
What is the Yama Deepam, and why does it face South?
The Yama Deepam is a single lamp lit outside the main door on Dhanteras evening, facing South, as an offering to Yama for the protection and long life of the family. It is also called यम दीपदान (Yama Deepdaan, the gift of a lamp to Yama). Some families light it on Naraka Chaturdashi instead; follow your own family's practice.
A well-known story explains the custom. A young prince was foretold to die soon after his wedding. On that night his wife kept the household awake, set lamps and her jewellery at the doorway and told stories until dawn, and the danger passed. Families tell it in different ways, but the meaning is the same: light kept at the threshold as a prayer for those inside.
The South-facing direction can surprise people who know Vastu's general preference for north and east. It is not a contradiction. The South belongs to Yama, the lord of dharma and order, and is associated in Vastu with strength and stability. On this one evening the lamp simply faces the direction of the deity it is offered to. There is nothing to fear in it, and nothing about a south-facing home that this custom changes.
06
How do you place the Yama Deepam safely in a flat?
Place the Yama Deepam on a metal plate or tray just outside your main door, with the flame facing South, and keep watch over it while it burns. In a building corridor, safety comes before custom.
01
Choose a stable base
A steel or brass plate on the floor or a solid ledge, not balanced on a shoe rack or railing.
02
Keep a clear space
Away from doormats, curtains, shoe racks, dry flowers, paper decorations and anything synthetic.
03
Mind the corridor
Do not block a common passage or fire exit, and follow your society's rules on open flames.
04
Stay nearby
Never leave it burning in an empty corridor or after the family goes to bed. Put it out once the evening prayer is done if no one can watch it.
05
Children and pets
Keep the lamp out of their reach, and let older children help light it with an adult beside them.
06
An acceptable substitute
If open flames are not allowed in your building, a covered lantern or an electric diya placed facing South keeps the intention of the custom.
07
How should you set up the home for Dhanteras as per Vastu?
Set up for Dhanteras in three places: the North-East for the evening puja, the North for anything linked with wealth, and the entrance for light. Everything else should already be clean from the days before.
01
North-East
Place a picture of Dhanvantari beside Lakshmi in the puja corner, and face east or north for the prayer.
02
North
Keep the area around the cash drawer or locker tidy and well lit, with nothing stacked in front of it.
03
Entrance
Keep the pair of lamps lit since Vasu Baras going, and add the Yama Deepam outside, facing South, at dusk.
04
Kitchen
A new vessel bought today belongs in use, in the South-East kitchen, rather than left in its box.
08
What comes before and after Dhanteras?
Dhanteras comes after Vasu Baras, which honours the cow and calf and sets up the puja corner and entrance; read the significance of Vasu Baras if you are starting there.
The next day is Naraka Chaturdashi, or Choti Diwali, with its early-morning Abhyanga Snan and the clearing of the last corners. For the full sequence, see our Diwali 2026 Vastu calendar.
09
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert if your locker or cash cupboard has no sensible place to go, if the North of the home is blocked by a toilet or heavy storage, or if money matters feel unsettled year after year. A consultation looks at the whole layout, not just one festival.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya consults on-site across Mumbai from her office in Andheri East, and through distant consultations using floor plans and photographs. Remedies are non-structural, so they suit rented homes and offices alike.
Questions
Frequently asked
What is the significance of Dhanteras?
Dhanteras honours Dhanvantari, associated with health and Ayurveda, alongside Lakshmi and Kubera, associated with prosperity. It opens the main days of Diwali by placing health and wealth side by side.
When is Dhanteras in 2026?
According to most panchangs, Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November 2026. Confirm the evening muhurat for your city with a local panchang or priest.
Why is a lamp lit facing South on Dhanteras?
The South is the direction of Yama, and the Yama Deepam is offered to him as a prayer for the family's protection and long life. It is a one-evening custom and does not change Vastu's general preference for facing north or east in puja.
Where should the Yama Deepam be kept?
Outside the main door, on a stable metal plate, with the flame facing South. Keep it away from doormats and decorations and do not leave it unattended.
Why is Dhanvantari worshipped on Dhanteras?
Tradition holds that Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, appeared from the churning of the ocean on this day carrying a pot of amrit, so families pray to him for good health.
Is Dhanteras only about buying gold?
No. Buying something durable is one custom among several. Prayer for health, the Yama Deepam and preparing the home matter just as much, and a simple vessel is as traditional as jewellery.
