Dhanteras: Where to Keep What You Buy
Dhanteras falls on 6 November 2026. Which direction the locker should face, where gold and silver are traditionally kept, what the day is actually about, and how not to be talked into spending more than you meant to.

01
What Dhanteras is, and when it falls in 2026
Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November 2026 and opens the five days of Diwali. It is associated both with Dhanvantari, connected with health, and with the custom of bringing something durable into the home — traditionally metal, most often silver or gold, but historically also vessels, tools and anything that lasts.
The older sense of the day is worth holding on to, because it has been somewhat buried. It is about bringing something of lasting use into a household that is ready to receive it — not about the size of the purchase.
02
Which direction should a locker or safe face?
The standard Vastu arrangement is a locker placed in the south-west of the home or office, with its door opening towards the north. The south-west, नैऋत्य (nairutya), is treated as the heaviest and most stable zone, suited to what is meant to stay; the north is associated with increase, so the opening faces that way.
A cupboard against the south or west wall, opening north or east, achieves the same thing in a flat where a dedicated locker room is not realistic. What is generally avoided is keeping valuables in the north-east, in the centre of the home, or in a cupboard that shares a wall with a toilet.
- Place the cupboard or locker against the south or south-west wall.
- Have the door open towards the north where the room allows.
- Avoid the north-east, the centre of the home and any wall shared with a bathroom.
- Keep the inside of it in order. A locker that cannot be closed properly is the practical problem, whatever the direction.
03
Where should gold and silver be kept?
In the same south-west cupboard, and traditionally wrapped in red or yellow cloth rather than left loose. Silver is sometimes kept separately in the north, associated with the moon and with water, though practice varies between families and either is defensible.
If what you bought is a vessel or a tool rather than jewellery, the guidance is simply to use it. The tradition is about bringing something useful into the house, and a steel vessel bought on Dhanteras and never taken out of its box has missed the point of the custom.
04
Finish the cleaning before, not after
Dhanteras assumes the home is already clean. That is why it sits at the start of the five days rather than the end — you prepare the house, then you bring something into it.
In practice this means the deep clean described for Diwali should be finished by 6 November, and the south-west cupboard in particular should be cleared out before anything new goes into it. Putting new jewellery into a cupboard full of things that should have been discarded years ago is the most common version of doing this backwards.
05
Buying a vehicle or property on the day
Both are common on Dhanteras and there is no objection in Vastu to either. For a vehicle, the north-west is the zone traditionally preferred for parking, being associated with movement.
For property, one thing is worth repeating: the date you book on has no effect on the Vastu of the flat itself. The main door direction, the shape, where the toilets fall and whether the north-east is cut are decided by the building, not the calendar. If you are booking on Dhanteras, have the flat looked at before 6 November rather than after.
06
A word about the spending
Dhanteras is the single most heavily marketed day in the Indian retail year, and a good deal of what is sold on it is sold using the word auspicious.
No Vastu principle requires you to spend a particular amount, buy gold specifically, or buy at all. A household that clears its home, repairs what is broken and brings in one useful thing it can afford is following the custom more closely than one that buys on credit because a day was described as lucky. If money is tight this year, a vessel is as traditional as a chain.
Questions
Frequently asked
When is Dhanteras in 2026?
Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November 2026, two days before Diwali on 8 November.
Which direction should a locker open towards?
Place the locker or cupboard in the south-west and have it open towards the north where the room allows.
Where should gold be kept at home as per Vastu?
In a cupboard or locker in the south-west, traditionally wrapped in red or yellow cloth. The north-east, the centre of the home and any wall shared with a bathroom are generally avoided.
Is it compulsory to buy gold on Dhanteras?
No. The custom is about bringing something durable and useful into the home. Vessels, tools and utensils are as traditional as jewellery, and nothing requires a purchase at all.
Should the house be cleaned before or after Dhanteras?
Before. Dhanteras opens the five days and assumes the home is already prepared, so aim to finish the deep cleaning by 6 November.
