Locker and Safe Direction at Home as per Vastu

Locker direction matters in Vastu because the locker symbolises the family's savings, security and accumulated wealth. Vastu holds that placing it in a stable zone and opening it towards the direction of wealth supports steady growth and preservation of money.

Two directions are involved: the zone where the locker stands, which relates to stability and preservation, and the direction its door opens towards, which relates to inflow. Both are worth considering together.

The locker is ideally placed against the South or West wall, most commonly in the South-West zone of the home or of the master bedroom. नैऋत्य (Nairutya, the South-West) carries the Earth element, which represents weight, stability and the preservation of what you have built.

Placing the heavy locker here also suits the general Vastu principle of keeping heavier objects in the South and West. In a compact Mumbai flat, a steel cupboard with a locker section in the South-West of the bedroom is a practical choice.

The locker door should ideally open facing North, the direction of Kubera, the guardian of wealth. उत्तर (Uttara, the North) is associated with new opportunities and the inflow of money.

When a locker stands against the South wall, its door naturally opens towards the North — which is why the South wall is so often recommended. If your locker must stand against the West wall and open East, this is also considered acceptable in many Vastu traditions, as the East is linked with growth and recognition. Avoid a locker that opens towards the South where possible.

A locker should not be placed in the North-East, in the centre of the home, under a beam, or on a wall shared with a toilet.

Keep cash, jewellery, important documents and valuables neatly organised inside the locker, along with a few traditional symbols of prosperity if you wish.

Old bills, expired documents, broken jewellery, unrelated junk and loose, crumpled papers should not be kept in the locker. These symbolise stagnation and confusion around money.

Avoid storing medicines, perfumes or anything damp or strong-smelling inside, and keep sharp objects elsewhere. Review the contents a few times a year — before Diwali is a traditional time — and clear out what is no longer needed.

Maintain the locker by keeping it clean, dry, rust-free and in good working order. A jammed lock, squeaky hinge or rusty surface is thought to block the smooth flow of prosperity, and it is also a practical security concern.

Wipe it regularly, keep the area around it uncluttered, and make sure the space is well lit. Mirrors inside a locker, facing the contents, are sometimes used in tradition as a symbol of doubling wealth; if you use one, keep it clean and unbroken.

In shops and offices, the same principles apply: place the safe against the South or West wall so that it opens facing North, and position cash counters so that the cashier faces North or East. Keep the North zone of the premises open and clean, and use Citrine or Pyrite at the cash counter if desired.

For a business, consistency matters — a well-organised cash counter, accurate records and a tidy safe support both Vastu and good financial practice.

If your locker cannot be moved, you can still support it with non-structural remedies rather than breaking walls or rebuilding cupboards. Many Mumbai flats have fitted wardrobes with built-in lockers that are simply not flexible.

Keep the locker scrupulously clean and organised, and place a Citrine or Pyrite crystal inside. A small Kubera Yantra or an image of Lakshmi inside can symbolically focus the intention on prosperity. Avoid clutter immediately around the locker, and improve the lighting in that corner. Where the placement is strongly unfavourable, such as a locker in the North-East or next to a toilet wall, a consultant can suggest specific pyramid, metal or colour remedies suited to your layout.
