When is Vasu Baras in 2026?
According to most panchangs, Vasu Baras falls on Thursday 5 November 2026, the day before Dhanteras. The Dwadashi tithi begins in the late morning of 5 November and runs into the morning of 6 November, so the evening puja, which is the heart of the day, is done on the 5th. A few calendars list 6 November, which is why it is worth checking.
Baras is the Marathi form of Dwadashi, the twelfth day of the lunar fortnight. The day falls in the waning half of Ashvin as the month is reckoned in Maharashtra. Muhurat timings change from city to city, so confirm the evening timing for Mumbai, or wherever you live, with a local panchang or your family priest rather than a forwarded message.
02
What is the significance of Vasu Baras?
Vasu Baras honours the cow and her calf as symbols of nourishment, gentleness and the care a mother gives. Its other name, गोवत्स द्वादशी (Govatsa Dwadashi, the twelfth day of the cow and calf), says this plainly: go is the cow and vatsa the calf.
For many Maharashtrian families it is also the day Diwali begins. The first rangoli of the season appears at the door, the first evening lamp is lit, and the akash kandil often goes up. In Gujarati homes the same day is known as Vagh Baras, and in other regions it is called Nandini Vrat. The names differ and so do the customs, but the gratitude behind them is shared.
It is a quiet start to a loud festival. Before the buying of Dhanteras and the lights of Lakshmi Puja, the first day asks a household to pause and say thank you for what sustains it.
03
What is the story behind Govatsa Dwadashi?
The day is most often linked with Nandini, the gentle, wish-fulfilling cow associated with the sage Vasishtha, and with Kamadhenu, the divine cow from whom such abundance is said to come. In the version told in many homes, the cow is worshipped together with her calf because the bond between them is the image of selfless care.
Families tell the story in different ways, and there is no need to settle on one. What matters for the day is the attitude it carries: respect for the animals and the land that feed us, and a vow, often kept by mothers, for the wellbeing of their children.
04
How is Vasu Baras traditionally observed?
Vasu Baras is traditionally observed with an evening puja of a cow and calf, at around गोधूलि (godhuli, the hour when cattle return home at dusk). Where a cow is kept, she and her calf are washed, decorated and honoured; the household then shares a simple meal.
Customs vary by family and community, so follow your own elders where they differ from what is described here.
01
The puja
Haldi and kumkum are applied to the cow and calf, they are garlanded, and an aarti is performed.
02
The offering
They are fed something suited to them: green fodder, a chapati or a little jaggery.
03
The vow
Many women, especially mothers, keep a fast or a partial fast for their children's wellbeing.
04
The food
Some families avoid cow's milk and dishes made from it for the day, leaving the milk for the calf.
05
The home
Rangoli is drawn at the entrance and the first lamp of Diwali is lit there in the evening.

How can you observe Vasu Baras in a city flat?
In a flat, you can observe Vasu Baras with a picture or small idol of a cow and calf, a rangoli at the door and a single lamp. Nothing in the spirit of the day requires a cow at home, and most Mumbai families have never had one.
If you would like to honour real cows, a gaushala or a temple that keeps cows is the right place. Ask what they need and offer fodder or a donation there. Please do not feed cattle on busy roads, and never offer sweets, packaged food or anything in plastic, which can harm them.
01
A picture or idol
Place it in your puja area for the evening, on a clean cloth, with a few flowers and a little haldi-kumkum.
02
A small rangoli
Draw it at the main door. Many families include a cow's hoof-print motif on this day; our guide to rangoli at the entrance covers placement and colours.
03
One lamp
Light a diya at the entrance at dusk and another beside the picture. Keep both on a stable base and never leave them unattended.
04
With children
Let them help with the rangoli and tell them the story simply. It is a gentle way to begin five busy days.
06
Why are the North-East and the entrance prepared first?
The North-East and the entrance are prepared first because one is where the festival is worshipped and the other is where it enters. Everything that happens over the next five days passes through these two places.
The North-East, ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East), is the zone of water and clarity in Vastu and the traditional place for the puja corner. Setting it up on Vasu Baras means the same clean, settled space is ready for Dhanvantari on Dhanteras and for Lakshmi Puja three days later, rather than being rearranged each evening. Wash the shelf, retire dried flowers respectfully, and keep the zone free of bags and shoes; the pooja ghar before Diwali explains this in more detail.
The entrance is the mouth of the home in Vastu, the point where light and people come in. A washed threshold, a fresh rangoli and one lamp on Vasu Baras set the tone for the whole festival, and the lamp at the door is commonly kept up every evening through to Bhai Dooj.
01
Face east or north
Set the cow-and-calf picture so that you face east or north while doing the aarti.
02
Keep the lamp to one side
Place the diya to the south-east of the picture where the layout allows, the side associated with fire.
03
Clear the threshold
Move shoes, deliveries and the dustbin away from the main door before the rangoli goes down.
07
What should be ready by the end of Vasu Baras?
By the end of Vasu Baras, the deep cleaning should be finished and the puja corner and entrance should be ready for the days ahead. The order we suggest for the cleaning itself is in Diwali cleaning the Vastu way, and the full five-day plan is in our Diwali 2026 Vastu calendar.
The next day is Dhanteras, when the focus turns to health and to bringing something lasting into the home. Read why Dhanteras matters for what that day means and how its evening lamp is placed.
08
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert if your North-East is taken by a toilet, a store or the kitchen, or if your entrance stays dark and cramped however much you clean it. These are layout questions, and they are easier to look at calmly before the festival than in the middle of it.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya consults on-site across Mumbai from her office in Andheri East, and through distant consultations using floor plans and photographs. Remedies are non-structural, using light, colour, crystals, Reiki and simple rituals, so they suit rented flats as well.
