Who Should Try Reiki, and Who Should Wait

01

Is Reiki right for what you are feeling?

Reiki may be right for you if you are looking for a quiet, gentle way to rest and feel more settled, and you are comfortable with it supporting, rather than replacing, any care you already receive. Many people come to it at a tired moment. Work has been relentless, sleep has thinned out, a relationship has ended, or you have been looking after someone else for so long that you have forgotten how to switch off.

Often a friend has mentioned Reiki, and you are curious but a little wary. You may wonder whether it is real, whether it is for people like you, or whether you should be doing something more practical instead. Those are fair questions. This guide answers them honestly, including the cases where the kinder advice is to wait, or to start somewhere else.

02

What does Reiki do, and what does it not do?

Reiki is a Japanese relaxation practice in which the practitioner places their hands lightly on, or just above, a series of positions while you rest fully clothed. It is associated with the flow of प्राण (prana, life energy), and most people describe the experience as deeply calming. For a fuller picture, read what Reiki is, in simple words and what a session actually feels like.

Reiki does not diagnose, treat or replace anything. It is not a medicine, a therapy for a psychiatric condition, or a substitute for surgery, physiotherapy or counselling. It cannot change a test result, end a dispute or fix a financial problem. What it can offer is a space to rest and breathe, and many people find that this space helps them face practical steps with a steadier mind.

03

Who should try Reiki?

Reiki tends to suit people who want to feel calmer and more grounded and who are open to a gentle, unhurried practice. You do not need to believe in anything in particular, and you do not need to have any experience.

  • 01

    People under ongoing stress

Long working hours, a demanding job, exams, a business under pressure or a busy city routine that never pauses.

  • 02

    Anyone who struggles to unwind

People who find it hard to let go at the end of the day and want a quiet ritual of rest, alongside sensible sleep habits.

  • 03

People going through a heavy phase

A breakup, a move, a job loss, a family change or simply a season of feeling low and tired, as a companion to support from people you trust.

  • 04

    Caregivers

Those who look after a parent, partner or child and rarely receive care themselves.

  • 05

    People receiving medical treatment

As a complement for relaxation, with your doctor's knowledge, never in place of the treatment. See Reiki alongside medical treatment.

04

Who should wait, or start somewhere else first?

Some people should see a doctor, counsellor or other professional before trying Reiki, or try it only once their situation is steadier. Waiting is not a judgement; it is about getting the right help in the right order.

  • 01

    If you are in crisis

If you feel unsafe, hopeless or overwhelmed, or have thoughts of harming yourself, please speak to a mental-health professional now. Reiki can come later, alongside that support.

  • 02

If you have new or worsening symptoms

Pain, breathlessness, fainting, sudden weight change or any symptom that has not yet been checked needs a doctor first.

  • 03

If you hope Reiki will replace treatment

Please do not stop or reduce any medicine or therapy because of Reiki. If that is the hope, it is better to wait and discuss it with your doctor.

  • 04

Soon after surgery or a hospital stay

Check with your doctor first, and keep any session gentle and short.

  • 05

    During pregnancy

Reiki can be a calm relaxation practice with your doctor's knowledge. Read Reiki during pregnancy before you book.

  • 06

    Children, or anyone being persuaded

Children receive Reiki only with a parent's consent and presence. An adult who does not want Reiki should not be talked into it by family; it is most helpful when someone chooses it freely.

05

Which service fits this?

Reiki fits when the heaviness seems to sit in you: tiredness, tension, low energy, or emotions that feel stuck. It works on the person, through relaxation, and it pairs naturally with the other services.

If the discomfort is tied to a particular room or began after a move, Vastu may be the better first step, because it works on the space. If the real trouble is a decision you keep circling, a tarot reading can help you think it through. Crystals can serve as a simple reminder of a calm intention between sessions. The guide Vastu, Reiki, tarot or crystals: which one do you need? compares them.

For anxiety, depression, grief that is not easing, trauma or sleep that has been poor for a long time, a doctor or counsellor comes first. If you are struggling, please reach out to a mental-health professional. In India you can call the free Tele-MANAS helpline on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416), available 24×7.

06

Should you choose in-person or distance Reiki?

Choose in-person Reiki if you are in Mumbai and like the feeling of a quiet session in the same room; choose distance Reiki if you are elsewhere, busy, unwell at home or simply prefer your own space. Both follow the same calm structure.

Distance Reiki is sent while you rest at home at an agreed time, so it suits people in other Indian cities and families living abroad. You can read how distance Reiki works online to see what to expect.

07

How will you know if Reiki is helping?

You will know Reiki is helping if you notice small, steady shifts in how you feel, not a sudden change. People often describe feeling lighter after a session, settling more easily at night, or being a little less reactive in a tense moment.

Keep a few lines in a notebook after each session: how you felt before, during and the next day. If, after a fair number of sessions, nothing feels different, it is perfectly fine to stop. There is no pressure to continue, and how many sessions people usually take varies from person to person. A simple closing thought many people like is ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः (Om shanti shanti shanti), a wish for peace within, around and beyond.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can anyone try Reiki?

Most adults can try Reiki, and children can receive it with a parent's consent and presence. It is gentle and non-invasive. People in crisis, or with new symptoms not yet checked by a doctor, should get professional help first and consider Reiki alongside it later.

Can Reiki replace my medicine or therapy?

No. Reiki complements medical and psychological care and never replaces it. Please do not stop or reduce any medicine or therapy because of Reiki, and let your doctor know you are having sessions.

Is Reiki safe during pregnancy?

Reiki is generally a gentle relaxation practice, and many people receive it during pregnancy with their doctor's knowledge. It does not replace antenatal care. Talk to your doctor first and mention your pregnancy when you book.

Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to help?

No belief is needed. Reiki is experienced as rest and relaxation, and many people come to it curious or sceptical. Being open to lying still and noticing how you feel is enough.

What if Reiki does not seem to help me?

It is perfectly fine to stop. Reiki suits some people more than others, and nothing is promised. If you are still feeling low or tense, please speak to a doctor or counsellor, or call Tele-MANAS on 14416, available 24×7.
