How Often Should You Take a Reiki Session?
Weekly, monthly or only when life feels heavy? A practical look at how often to take a Reiki session, what shapes the rhythm, and how to support yourself between sessions.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
How often should you take a Reiki session?
There is no single rule for how often to take a Reiki session; the rhythm depends on what you are seeking and how you respond. Some people come once when they feel overwhelmed. Others prefer a short series, followed by occasional sessions to stay balanced.
Reiki is a Japanese relaxation and energy-balancing practice. The word combines Rei (universal) and Ki (life energy), similar to the idea of प्राण (prana, life energy) in Indian traditions. Because it is gentle and non-invasive, it can be repeated as often as feels helpful, without any concern of too much.
02
What is a common starting pattern?
A common starting pattern is a short series of sessions spaced close together. This gives you a chance to relax into the experience and notice how you feel over several days.
01
First session
A conversation about what you are experiencing, followed by a full session. Many people simply feel rested.
02
Next two or three sessions
Often within two to four weeks, so that each session builds on the calm of the previous one.
03
Review
After this short series, you and your practitioner decide whether to continue, space sessions out or pause.
03
How often should you take Reiki for stress?
For everyday stress, many people find a session every one to two weeks during a demanding phase helpful, and less often once things settle. Exams, a work deadline, a house move or caring for a family member are typical times people choose Reiki.
Once the pressure eases, a monthly session or a session at the change of each season can help you maintain a sense of balance. Some people prefer to simply book when they notice they are sleeping poorly or feeling scattered.
Reiki is complementary wellness. If stress is affecting your health, sleep or daily functioning, please also speak to a doctor or counsellor. If you are struggling, please reach out to a mental-health professional. In India you can call the free Tele-MANAS helpline on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416), available 24×7.
04
Is weekly Reiki too often?
Weekly Reiki is not too often; it is a comfortable rhythm for many people during a busy or emotional period. Reiki does not involve pressure, medicines or manipulation of the body, so frequent sessions are generally gentle.
What matters more than frequency is whether the sessions feel useful. If you feel calmer, more rested or more centred, the rhythm is working. If you notice little difference, discuss it openly with your practitioner — it may be worth adjusting the spacing or combining Reiki with changes at home.
05
What affects how many sessions you need?
Several things influence how many Reiki sessions feel right for you. Everyone responds differently, so it is wise not to expect a fixed number.
01
Your reason for coming
A one-off tense week needs less than a long, draining phase of life.
02
Your routine
Sleep, food, movement and screen habits all shape how rested you feel.
03
Your home environment
A cluttered or restless home can pull you back into tension. This is where Reiki Vastu, which applies Reiki to a space, can help.
04
Other support
Counselling, medical care and family support work alongside Reiki, not against it.
05
Personal practice
People who learn simple self-care practices often need sessions less frequently.
06
Does distance Reiki follow the same schedule?
Distance Reiki can follow the same schedule as in-person sessions. Dr. Kimaya offers distance Reiki for people outside Mumbai or those who cannot travel, and many clients find it convenient for a regular rhythm.
Choose a quiet time, sit or lie down comfortably, switch your phone to silent and stay relaxed for the duration. Because there is no travel, some people find it easier to keep a weekly or fortnightly routine this way.
07
How can you support yourself between Reiki sessions?
You can support yourself between sessions with small, steady habits at home. These keep the sense of calm going and help you notice what changes.
01
Drink water and rest
Especially on the day of a session.
02
A quiet corner
Sit for a few minutes each day in the North-East or East of your home, where light and calm are associated in Vastu.
03
Breathe slowly
A few rounds of slow breathing, or chanting ॐ शान्तिः (Om Shanti, peace), before sleep.
04
Keep a simple journal
Note your sleep, mood and energy for a few weeks so you can see patterns.
05
Refresh your space
Open windows in the morning, clear clutter and use salt water mopping once a week, as suggested in salt therapy.
08
When to book a Reiki session
Book a Reiki session when you feel stretched, restless or low on energy and would like a calm, supportive space to pause. Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers Reiki in person at her Andheri East office, alongside Reiki Vastu visits across Mumbai, and distance Reiki for clients elsewhere.
During your first session she will listen to what you are going through and suggest a rhythm that suits you, with no pressure to commit to a long series. Please continue any medical or psychological treatment you are receiving; Reiki works alongside it.
