Reiki Levels 1, 2 and 3 Explained

01

What are the levels of Reiki?

Reiki is traditionally taught in three levels: Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3, also called the Master level. Each level builds on the one before, moving from self-healing to healing others, then to deeper practice and, in many schools, teaching.

Reiki is a Japanese healing technique in which a practitioner channels universal life energy through the hands. The word joins Rei, universal, and Ki, life energy, an idea close to the Indian concept of प्राण (prana, life energy). In the widely followed Usui system, the levels have Japanese names: Shoden, Okuden and Shinpiden.

Different lineages divide the training slightly differently. Some split the Master level into Master Practitioner and Master Teacher, and some use more stages. The overall journey, however, is similar.

02

What is Reiki Level 1?

Reiki Level 1, or Shoden, meaning first teaching, focuses on self-healing and on giving hands-on Reiki to family, friends, pets and plants. It is the foundation of all later practice and requires no prior experience.

  • 01

    Attunement

The teacher gives an attunement that opens the student to channel Reiki.

  • 02

    Hand positions

Students learn hand positions for treating themselves and others.

  • 03

    Reiki principles

The five Reiki principles, often summarised as just for today: do not anger, do not worry, be grateful, work honestly and be kind.

  • 04

    Daily self-practice

Students are encouraged to practise self-healing every day.

  • 05

    History and ethics

An introduction to the origins of Reiki and how to practise responsibly.

03

What is Reiki Level 2?

Reiki Level 2, or Okuden, meaning inner teaching, introduces the Reiki symbols and distance healing. Students learn to focus Reiki more precisely and to send it to people and places that are not physically present.

  • 01

    Three symbols

Usually Cho Ku Rei (power), Sei He Ki (mental and emotional harmony) and Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen (distance).

  • 02

    Distance Reiki

Sending Reiki to someone in another city, or to a home or office using photographs.

  • 03

    Emotional support

Using Reiki for emotional balance, always alongside, never in place of, professional care.

  • 04

    Space healing

Cleansing rooms and homes, which connects naturally with Reiki Vastu.

  • 05

    Practitioner path

Many people begin offering sessions to others after Level 2 and a period of practice.

04

What is Reiki Level 3 or the Master level?

Reiki Level 3, or Shinpiden, meaning mystery teaching, is the Master level. It introduces the master symbol, Dai Ko Myo, deepens personal and spiritual practice and, in many lineages, teaches how to give attunements and train students.

Being a Reiki Master is less about a title and more about commitment. Traditional teachers see it as a lifelong path of daily practice, humility and service. Some schools separate personal mastery from teacher training, so ask exactly what a Master course includes before enrolling.

05

How long should you wait between Reiki levels?

Most teachers recommend a period of regular practice between levels rather than taking them back to back. The time lets the student integrate each stage, build sensitivity and develop a habit of daily self-healing.

The gap varies by teacher and lineage, from a few weeks between Level 1 and 2 to a longer period before the Master level. Be cautious of courses that promise every level in a single weekend without supervised practice or follow-up support.

06

What happens during a Reiki attunement?

During an attunement, the student sits quietly with eyes closed while the teacher performs a short ritual that opens the student's ability to channel Reiki. It is gentle, painless and usually takes a few minutes.

Experiences vary. Some people feel warmth, tingling, colours or emotion; others feel simply relaxed. Teachers often suggest drinking water, resting and practising self-healing daily for some weeks after an attunement, as a time of adjustment and reflection.

07

Which Reiki level is right for you?

The right Reiki level depends on what you hope to gain: Level 1 suits anyone seeking a self-care practice, Level 2 suits those who want to help others or work at a distance, and the Master level suits people drawn to a deeper, long-term commitment.

There is no pressure to continue beyond Level 1. Many people practise self-healing for years and find it a calming daily ritual, a few quiet minutes of hands-on Reiki before sleep or after a long day. Others feel called to learn more after regular practice. Let your own experience, rather than a course schedule, guide the next step.

  • 01

    For self-care

    Level 1, with daily self-practice.

  • 02

    For family and space healing

Level 2, including distance Reiki and cleansing rooms.

  • 03

    For deeper practice or teaching

The Master level, after sustained practice and guidance from a teacher.

08

How do you choose a Reiki teacher?

Choose a Reiki teacher who is open about their lineage, their own training and what each course includes. A good fit matters more than a quick certificate.

  • 01

    Lineage

Ask which Reiki system they teach and who trained them.

  • 02

    Practice time

Look for courses that include hands-on practice, not only theory.

  • 03

    Support after class

Ongoing guidance and practice circles help students grow.

  • 04

    Ethics

A responsible teacher never suggests stopping medical treatment and treats Reiki as complementary.

  • 05

    Comfort

You should feel respected, unhurried and free to ask questions.

09

When to book a Reiki session

You do not need to learn Reiki to benefit from it; a session with a practitioner is a gentle way to experience it first. Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers Reiki healing and Reiki Vastu from VastuKimaya's office in Andheri East, on-site across Mumbai or by distance, where Reiki is also used to cleanse spaces and activate Vastu remedies.

Reiki supports relaxation and wellbeing and complements, but does not replace, medical or psychological care.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can I learn Reiki Level 2 without Level 1?

Usually not. Level 1 builds the foundation of self-healing and attunement that Level 2 relies on, so most teachers require it first.

Do I need special abilities to learn Reiki?

No special abilities are needed. Reiki is traditionally considered accessible to anyone willing to receive attunement and practise regularly.

Can Reiki Level 1 practitioners heal others?

Yes, Level 1 students learn to give hands-on Reiki to family and friends, though the main focus is self-healing.

What is the difference between a Reiki Master and a Reiki teacher?

In some lineages they are the same; in others, Master Practitioner covers personal mastery while Master Teacher adds training to attune and teach students.

Is Reiki connected to any religion?

Reiki is a spiritual healing practice rather than a religion, and people of all faiths learn and receive it.
