When is Margashirsha Guruvar 2026?
In the calendar followed in Maharashtra, the Margashirsha Guruvar vrat falls on five Thursdays: 10, 17, 24 and 31 December 2026 and 7 January 2027. In this amanta reckoning, where the month runs from one new moon to the next, Margashirsha begins on Wednesday 9 December 2026 and ends on Thursday 7 January 2027.
North Indian calendars follow the purnimanta reckoning, in which the month begins after the full moon, so their Margashirsha Thursdays fall about two weeks earlier, from late November. If you have seen different dates online, this is usually why.
Please confirm the dates, and any muhurat for setting up the ghat, with Kalnirnay or another Marathi panchang, or with your family priest. This article does not give timings.
02
What is the Margashirsha Guruvar vrat?
The Margashirsha Guruvar vrat is a Thursday observance dedicated to Mahalakshmi, kept mainly by women in Marathi households through the month of मार्गशीर्ष (Margashirsha). On each Thursday a ghat, a decorated kalash representing the goddess, is set up at home, the vrat katha is read, and the family offers a simple naivedya.
Margashirsha is held in special regard; in the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna names it as the month among months with which he identifies. For many families the vrat is a quiet monthly discipline of prayer, gratitude and household order, and a time when the home is kept especially clean and bright.
03
Which direction should the Mahalakshmi ghat face?
Set up the ghat in the North-East of the home or the pooja area, or in the North or East if the North-East is not free, and sit facing East or North while you pray. The ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East) is the zone of worship and clarity, and the North belongs to Kubera, the guardian of wealth, which is why Lakshmi pujas are so often arranged towards it; see Kubera and the North.
In most flats the easiest arrangement is the ghat against the East wall, so that the Mahalakshmi image faces West and you face East. Keep the ghat raised on a chowki or pat rather than on the floor, and away from footwear, the dustbin and a toilet wall.
04
What is placed in the Margashirsha Guruvar kalash?
The kalash is usually filled with clean water and a few auspicious items, ringed with leaves and crowned with a coconut or a decorated image of Mahalakshmi. Customs differ from family to family, so follow your own household's way where it varies. The meaning and placement of the kalash itself are explained in kalash sthapana at home.
01
The base
A chowki or pat covered with a clean red or yellow cloth, with a small heap of rice or wheat on which the kalash sits.
02
Inside the kalash
Water, often with a coin, a supari, a little rice, haldi-kumkum and a few durva blades or a flower.
03
Leaves
Mango leaves around the mouth; some families use a set of leaves from several trees.
04
The goddess
A coconut wrapped in cloth, or a decorated Mahalakshmi face or image, placed on the leaves.
05
Around the ghat
A rangoli in front, often with Lakshmi's footprints drawn walking into the home, flowers, a lamp and the vrat katha book.
05
How do you do the Thursday puja at home?
Clean the corner the evening before, set up the ghat on Thursday morning, perform the puja and read the katha, and close the day with an evening aarti. Most families keep it simple and repeat the same set-up each week.
01
Wednesday evening
Wipe the North-East corner, clear any clutter, and wash the kalash and the plate.
02
Thursday morning
After bathing, draw the rangoli, set up the ghat, light the lamp and offer flowers and haldi-kumkum.
03
The katha
Read the Mahalakshmi vrat katha aloud, alone or with the women of the house.
04
Naivedya and the meal
Many keep a simple fast through the day and eat after the evening puja; follow your family's practice. Anyone who is unwell, pregnant or on regular medication can keep the vrat through prayer alone, or check with their doctor before fasting.
05
Friday morning
Many families take the ghat down respectfully the next morning and pour the kalash water into the tulsi or other plants; others keep it through the month.
06
When is the Margashirsha Guruvar udyapan?
The udyapan, the formal completion of the vrat, is traditionally held on the last Thursday of the month, which in 2026 is 7 January 2027 in the calendar followed in Maharashtra. Some families hold it on the fourth Thursday, 31 December.
On the udyapan day many households invite married women for haldi-kumkum and give them a small vaan, often including a copy of the vrat katha. Ask the elders in your family or your priest how your household completes it, and confirm the date with Kalnirnay.
07
Can the vrat be kept in a small flat without a pooja room?
Yes. The vrat needs only a clean, raised surface in a bright corner, and the North-East of the living room serves well when the flat has no pooja room. Vastu can be applied room by room, a point explained in pooja room Vastu for small homes.
01
Use a low side table
Cleared and covered with a cloth, it works as a chowki for the day.
02
Keep the passage clear
In a compact hall, the ghat should not sit where people walk past constantly.
03
Avoid the bedroom and balcony
A bedroom feels too private and a balcony too exposed to wind and dust; the hall is usually the calmer choice.
04
Mind the lamp
Keep the diya on a metal plate, away from curtains and the kalash cloth.
08
How does Datta Jayanti fit into this month?
Datta Jayanti falls inside Margashirsha, on Wednesday 23 December 2026, the Margashirsha Purnima, according to most panchangs, the day before the third Guruvar. Thursday is also the day traditionally linked with the Guru, so for many Maharashtrian families the two observances sit naturally together; see Datta Jayanti 2026: Dattatreya puja at home.
The same full moon is also observed as Annapurna Jayanti, a day for honouring the kitchen and the grain store, which fits well with a month spent caring for the home.
09
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert if your flat has no clean, bright spot in the North-East, North or East for the ghat, or if that corner is taken by a toilet, the kitchen sink or heavy storage. These are common in compact Mumbai homes and can often be eased with non-structural changes.
