Kubera and the North: Vastu Symbols of Prosperity
In Vastu, the North belongs to Kubera, guardian of wealth. What the Kuber direction means, how to keep it open and active, and the symbols of prosperity traditionally placed there.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
Who is Kubera and why is the North his direction?
Kubera is the guardian of wealth and treasures in Hindu tradition, and in Vastu he presides over the North. In the वास्तु पुरुष मंडल (Vastu Purusha Mandala), each of the eight directions has a guardian deity, known as a दिक्पाल (Dikpala, guardian of a direction), and कुबेर (Kubera) is the Dikpala of the North.
This is why the North is often called the Kuber direction, and why Vastu associates it with money, opportunities, career growth and the steady flow of resources. The North sits between the North-East, linked with Water and clarity, and the North-West, linked with Air and movement, so it is naturally a zone of fluid, flowing energy.
02
What does the North zone represent in a home?
The North zone represents opportunities, income, new openings in career and business, and a sense of possibility. It is associated with the Water element's fluid quality, which is why flow and openness matter so much here.
When the North is cluttered, dark or blocked, Vastu holds that opportunities may feel slower to arrive. When it is clean, light and open, the zone is believed to support steady progress. As always, Vastu supports effort and good planning; it does not replace them.
03
How should the North zone be kept?
Keep the North zone clean, light, open and uncluttered. This is the single most important step for the Kuber direction.
01
Declutter
Remove old newspapers, broken items, unused furniture and cartons from the North.
02
Keep windows open
North windows bring steady, diffused light; keep them clean and uncovered in the day.
03
Light colours
Light green, pale blue, white or cream suit the North.
04
Low furniture
Prefer low, light furniture over tall, heavy cupboards on the North wall.
05
Avoid dustbins and heavy storage
Keep bins, shoe racks and junk storage out of the North zone.
04
Where should the locker or cash box face?
The locker or cash box should open towards the North, so that it faces the Kuber direction. A common arrangement is to place the locker cupboard against the South wall of a room, so its door opens facing North.
Keep the inside of the locker neat. Store cash, jewellery and important documents in orderly pouches or folders, and avoid mixing them with old bills, broken items or unused keys. Many families keep a small image of Goddess Lakshmi or Kubera, a red cloth or a few coins inside, according to their own tradition. In shops and offices, the cash counter follows the same principle, with cash drawers opening towards the North or East.
05
Which symbols of prosperity suit the North?
Symbols associated with abundance, growth and flow suit the North. Choose one or two that feel meaningful to you rather than filling the zone with objects.
01
Kubera yantra
A traditional geometric yantra associated with Kubera, placed with respect on the North wall or in the prayer area and ideally energised before use.
02
Money plant
A healthy money plant in a green or blue pot in the North, kept climbing upward.
03
Small water element
A clean water bowl with fresh flowers, or a small, well-maintained fountain or aquarium, in the North or North-East.
04
Wealth crystals
Citrine and Pyrite are wealth-supporting crystals often placed near the locker or cash area.
05
Mirror on the North wall
A clean mirror on the North wall is associated with openness and multiplying opportunities; it should not face the main door.
06
Images of flowing water
A calm painting of a river or lake, never a stormy or stagnant scene.
06
What should be avoided in the Kuber direction?
Avoid anything that blocks, weighs down or dirties the North. None of these are reasons for fear; each is a simple thing to adjust.
01
Clutter and junk
The most common issue in the North zone.
02
Dustbins
Move them to the South-West or West side of the kitchen or utility area.
03
Heavy, tall cupboards on the North wall
Shift them to the South or West walls where possible.
04
Dead plants or dry flowers
Replace them with healthy, fresh ones.
05
Stagnant or dirty water
Change water in bowls and aquariums regularly.
06
Leaks and seepage
Repair promptly; leaks are associated with money slipping away.
07
What if a toilet or kitchen is in the North?
A toilet or kitchen in the North can be balanced with non-structural remedies, so there is no need to demolish or panic. Many Mumbai flats have such compromises.
For a North toilet, keep it clean, dry, well ventilated and closed, with the exhaust fan working; a consultant may suggest colour or metal remedies. For a North kitchen, keep it spotless, avoid clutter and cook facing East. Keep the rest of the North zone in that room especially light and open.
08
Can prayer and daily habits support the North zone?
Yes, simple prayer and daily habits can keep the North zone active and cared for. Some families recite a short prayer to Kubera or Lakshmi on Fridays or festivals such as Dhanteras and Diwali, while others simply light a diya in the prayer area each evening.
Equally important are practical habits: paying bills on time, keeping accounts organised and saving regularly. Vastu is most meaningful when your space and your actions point in the same direction.
09
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consider consulting a Vastu expert when money matters feel persistently blocked despite effort, when the North of your home holds a toilet, staircase or store room, or when you are setting up a new home, shop or office.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar maps the North zone accurately with on-site compass measurement and suggests non-structural remedies such as crystals, pyramids, colour, metal and Reiki Vastu. Consultations are available across Mumbai from the Andheri East office, or as a distant consultation.
