Annapurna Jayanti 2026: Honouring the Kitchen and the Grain Store

01

When is Annapurna Jayanti 2026?

According to most panchangs, Annapurna Jayanti 2026 falls on Wednesday 23 December, the full moon of the month of Margashirsha. It is the same day as Datta Jayanti, so many Maharashtrian homes observe both; see Datta Jayanti 2026: Dattatreya puja at home.

Tithi timings vary between sources and cities, so please confirm the time for any puja with Kalnirnay or another panchang, or with your family priest. The day also falls within the Thursday Mahalakshmi vrat month; see Margashirsha Guruvar 2026.

02

Who is Annapurna, and why is she honoured in the kitchen?

अन्नपूर्णा (Annapurna, she who is full of food) is revered as a form of Parvati who nourishes all beings, and she is honoured in the kitchen because that is where the household's food is prepared and stored. She is usually shown holding a vessel of food and a ladle, and in a well-known story even Shiva receives food from her in Kashi.

The heart of the day is gratitude for food, care for the place where it is cooked, and a promise not to waste it. A verse recited in many homes before meals expresses this:

अन्नपूर्णे सदापूर्णे शंकरप्राणवल्लभे। ज्ञानवैराग्यसिद्ध्यर्थं भिक्षां देहि च पार्वति॥ (Annapurne sadapurne Shankara pranavallabhe, jnana vairagya siddhyartham bhiksham dehi cha Parvati): 'O Annapurna, ever full, beloved of Shankara, O Parvati, grant us the alms of food, for the sake of wisdom and detachment.'

03

Should the kitchen be cleaned before Annapurna Jayanti?

Yes. A thorough kitchen clean the day before is the most practical way to honour the day, and it matters more than any decoration. Work from the grain store outwards, so that the food the household depends on is cleaned first.

  • 01

    Grain and dal containers

Empty, wipe and dry them fully before refilling. Sift the grain and remove anything damp or infested.

  • 02

    Spices and dry stock

Check dates, throw away what is stale, and close every packet properly.

  • 03

    The stove area

Degrease the hob, the wall behind it and the chimney filter. Placement rules are covered in gas stove direction as per Vastu; this is only about cleanliness.

  • 04

    The fridge

Clear old leftovers and wipe the shelves.

  • 05

    Sink, drain and dustbin

Clean the drain, wash the bin and keep it covered and out of sight.

04

Where should the Annapurna idol be kept in the kitchen?

Keep a small Annapurna image or idol raised on a clean shelf on the East or North wall of the kitchen, or in its North-East portion, away from the stove, the sink and the dustbin. If the kitchen has no clean shelf for it, keeping her in the home mandir is entirely appropriate.

In an open kitchen, a small shelf or niche on the dining side, facing into the room, works well; the layout of open kitchens is covered in kitchen Vastu for modern open kitchens. Some families keep the image near the grain store instead. Follow your household's custom, and simply keep the image dry, dusted and out of reach of smoke and splashes.

  • 01

    Not above the stove

Heat, smoke and grease dull the image and its frame.

  • 02

Not beside the sink or bin

Water splashes and waste do not sit well beside an image of worship.

  • 03

    Small and simple

A small brass idol or a framed picture is enough for a compact Mumbai kitchen.

05

Which direction should rice and grain be stored as per Vastu?

Store heavy stocks of rice, wheat, atta and dal along the South or West walls of the kitchen, or in its South-West or West portion, and keep everyday jars in the North-West. The South-West carries the stable earth element, which suits heavy storage, while the North-West is the zone of movement, so items kept there are used and refilled often.

Avoid heavy grain storage in the North-East of the kitchen and under the sink, where damp is likely. Storeroom Vastu covers where bulk storage belongs in the rest of the home.

  • 01

    Bulk stock

Large drums and sacks along the South or West wall, raised off the floor on a low stand.

  • 02

    Daily jars

A smaller jar of each grain in the North-West, refilled from the bulk stock.

06

How do you keep grain fresh and free of pests in Mumbai?

Keep grain dry, airtight and moving: clean containers, dry hands and scoops, and old stock used before new. Mumbai's humidity, especially in the monsoon, is the main enemy of stored grain.

  • 01

    Airtight steel or glass

Containers with good lids keep out moisture and insects better than open bags.

  • 02

    Traditional deterrents

Many families add dried neem leaves, a few dried red chillies or bay leaves to rice and dal.

  • 03

    First in, first out

Pour new stock beneath what is left, or use up the old stock before refilling.

  • 04

Buy what you can store well

In a compact flat, smaller quantities bought more often keep fresher than a large stock that sits.

07

Is it bad to let the rice container become empty?

It is not something to fear, but many families make a point of refilling the rice container before it runs completely empty, as a gesture of abundance and gratitude. It is also simply good housekeeping: a household that never runs out of its staple is a calmer one.

Some families leave a handful of grain in the container when they refill it, or add a fistful of fresh rice on Annapurna Jayanti. Customs vary by family and community, and there is no need to worry if the jar is ever empty for a day.

08

How is Annapurna Jayanti observed at home?

Most families observe the day by cooking fresh, simple food, offering the first portion to Annapurna, eating together and sharing food with others. Offer the naivedya before the family eats, recite the verse above or a short prayer of thanks, and take care that nothing cooked is wasted.

Giving grain or a meal to someone in need, to the people who help run your home, or to a local temple's annadaan is a natural way to mark the day. Some keep a fast; anyone who is unwell, pregnant or on regular medication can observe the day through prayer alone, or check with their doctor first.

09

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consult a Vastu expert if your kitchen sits in the North-East or the centre of the home, if there is no dry wall for grain storage, or if the kitchen and a toilet share a wall. These are common in Mumbai flats and can often be eased with non-structural remedies.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya advises homes on-site across Mumbai from her Andheri East office and through distant consultations using floor plans and photographs.
