Home Gym Vastu: Where to Work Out
A treadmill in the living room, dumbbells under the bed or yoga on the balcony? Home gym Vastu tips on where to exercise, which way to face and where heavy equipment belongs.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
Why think about Vastu for a home gym?
Thinking about Vastu for a home gym helps you choose a spot that feels energising for exercise and does not disturb the calm zones of the home. Exercise is active, noisy and sometimes heavy, so its placement is worth a moment's thought.
In Mumbai flats, a home gym is often a mat in the living room, a treadmill on the balcony or a spare room turned into a workout corner. The tips below work for all three. As with any fitness routine, check with your doctor before starting, especially if you have a health condition.
02
Which direction is suitable for a home gym?
The South, West and South-East are suitable for an active home gym. The South-East is the Fire zone of Agni, associated with energy and drive; the South and West are associated with strength, stamina and steady effort.
The North-West, the Air zone of Vayu, also suits light cardio and movement-based workouts, such as skipping or dance fitness. The ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) should be kept open, so avoid setting heavy machines in the middle of the home.
01
South-East
Cardio, high-energy workouts and exercise bikes.
02
South and West
Strength training, weights and heavier machines.
03
North-West
Light cardio, dance, skipping and stretching routines.
04
North-East and East
Yoga, pranayama and meditation, rather than heavy equipment.
03
Where should yoga and meditation be done at home?
Yoga and meditation suit the North-East or East of the home, where morning light and a calm atmosphere support breath and focus. The North-East, known as ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East), is associated with clarity and the Water element, and is traditionally kept light and open.
Roll out your mat so you face East or North. A small, uncluttered corner with a plant and natural light is enough. Many people begin their practice with प्राणायाम (pranayama, breathing exercises) to settle the mind before movement.
04
Which way should you face while exercising?
Face East or North while exercising where the layout allows. The East is associated with the rising sun and vitality, and the North with fresh opportunities and a clear mind.
On a treadmill or cycle, position the machine so you look towards East or North, ideally towards a window. If the equipment only fits facing South or West, keep the area bright and uncluttered, and do stretching or cool-down facing East.
Wherever you face, keep a clear line of sight and enough space around the equipment so you can move freely and safely.
05
Where should heavy gym equipment be kept?
Keep heavy equipment such as dumbbell racks, weight benches, multi-gyms and treadmills along the South or West walls. These zones are associated with weight and stability, and keeping them heavier leaves the North and East lighter and more open.
01
Avoid the North-East
Do not store heavy weights, machines or bulky boxes in the North-East.
02
Store small items neatly
Resistance bands, mats and blocks go into a basket or cabinet in the West or South.
03
Floor protection
Use rubber mats under heavy equipment to protect floors and reduce noise for neighbours.
04
Electrical safety
Plug treadmills into a suitable, earthed socket; electrical equipment is comfortable in the South-East.
06
Can a home gym be set up in the bedroom?
A home gym can share a bedroom if there is no other space, though the bedroom is ideally kept for rest. If you must combine them, keep equipment compact, in the South or West part of the room and away from the bed.
Cover or fold away equipment at night so the room feels restful rather than active. A treadmill or bike facing the bed can make it harder to switch off, so place it along a side wall. In the master bedroom in the South-West, keep equipment light and minimal.
07
What colours, mirrors and lighting suit a home gym?
Energetic but not harsh colours, good natural light and well-placed mirrors suit a home gym. The aim is a space that feels motivating without becoming restless.
01
Colours
Warm peach, orange or soft red accents in a South-East gym; light greens or cream for a yoga corner in the North-East or East.
02
Mirrors
Mirrors help form, and are generally comfortable on North or East walls; avoid a mirror facing a bed in a shared bedroom.
03
Light
Morning sunlight is ideal; add bright, even lighting for evening workouts.
04
Ventilation
Open windows or use a fan for fresh air and to let प्राण (prana, life energy) flow.
08
How can you keep a small workout space fresh?
Keep a small workout space fresh by clearing it after every session and cleaning equipment regularly. Sweat, damp towels and piled-up gear make any space feel heavy.
Hang towels to dry outside the room, wipe down mats, and keep water bottles and shoes in a fixed place. Play gentle music for stretching and upbeat music for cardio. Once a week, open all windows and let the space air out. A bowl of rock salt in a corner, changed regularly, is a simple space-cleansing habit.
