Meditation Corner Vastu: Where to Sit and Why

01

Which direction is ideal for a meditation room as per Vastu?

The North-East is the ideal direction for a meditation room or corner as per Vastu. Known as ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East), this zone is ruled by Isha and carries the water element, linked with clarity, calm and spiritual growth.

If the North-East is taken by a toilet, kitchen or bedroom, the East and North are good alternatives. The East brings morning light and the energy of Surya, while the North is associated with calm focus. What matters most is a clean, quiet spot you can return to every day.

02

Which direction should you face while meditating?

Face East or North while meditating. Facing East aligns you with the rising sun and new beginnings, and facing North with stillness and focus. Many traditional practices, including ध्यान (dhyana, meditation), prefer an East-facing seat at sunrise.

Avoid facing South while meditating where possible. If your room layout makes East or North difficult, choose the calmest option and keep your spine upright and comfortable. A regular practice in a less ideal direction is far more helpful than no practice.

03

Why does the North-East suit meditation?

The North-East suits meditation because it is traditionally the lightest, purest and most spiritually charged zone of the home. It receives early morning light and, on the वास्तु पुरुष मंडल (Vastu Purusha Mandala), corresponds to the head of the Vastu Purusha.

This is also why the pooja room and a small water element are recommended here. When you sit in the North-East, the idea is that you draw on the same qualities of clarity and शांति (shanti, peace) that the zone is meant to hold.

Timing also matters in traditional practice. The early hours before sunrise, often called ब्रह्म मुहूर्त (Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn period), are considered especially suited to meditation, when the home and the city are still quiet. If mornings are rushed, a quiet evening sitting after sunset works well too.

04

How should you set up a meditation corner?

Set up a meditation corner with very little: a clean floor, a mat or cushion, soft light and one or two meaningful objects. Simplicity helps the mind settle.

  • 01

    Seat

A cotton or wool mat, or a firm cushion that keeps your hips slightly above your knees.

  • 02

    Light

Natural light by day and a diya or warm lamp for early mornings and evenings.

  • 03

    Crystals

Amethyst or Clear Quartz are commonly placed nearby for calm and clarity.

  • 04

    Sound

A small bell or singing bowl to begin and end your practice.

  • 05

    Aroma

A gentle natural incense or essential oil diffuser, with the window slightly open.

05

What colours suit a meditation space?

Soft, light colours such as white, cream, pale yellow, light blue and gentle lavender suit a meditation space. They reflect light and feel calm, which suits the North-East.

Avoid dark, heavy colours and busy patterns on the walls around your seat. If you use images, choose serene ones: a deity you pray to, a sunrise, a lotus or a simple mandala. Keep the wall in front of you as uncluttered as possible.

06

What should you avoid in a meditation corner?

Avoid clutter, electronics, toilets nearby and heavy overhead beams in a meditation corner. Each of these can make stillness harder.

  • 01

    Beams

Do not sit directly under a beam; shift your seat slightly.

  • 02

    Devices

Keep phones on silent and away, or use them only for a timer.

  • 03

    Shared walls

Avoid a spot sharing a wall with a toilet if possible.

  • 04

    Storage

Do not use the corner for storing boxes or laundry.

  • 05

    Mirrors

A mirror directly facing you can be distracting.

07

How can you create a meditation corner in a small Mumbai flat?

In a small Mumbai flat, create a meditation corner on a balcony, beside a North or East window, or in a quiet part of the bedroom. You do not need a separate room; a clean square of floor is enough.

Use a folding screen, a plant or a rug to mark the space. Roll away the mat after practice if space is tight. Many people combine the pooja shelf and meditation seat in the North-East of the living room. Meditation is a complementary wellbeing practice; if you are dealing with anxiety, sleep problems or low mood, please continue care with a doctor or mental-health professional.

Consistency makes the corner feel special. Try to sit at the same time each day, even for five minutes, and keep the space ready so there is nothing to set up. Over weeks, simply walking to that corner can begin to signal to your body and mind that it is time to slow down.

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consult a Vastu expert if your North-East is occupied by a toilet or kitchen and you are unsure where to meditate, or if you are designing a home and want a dedicated space for pooja and meditation.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers Vastu and Reiki Vastu consultations from VastuKimaya's office in Andheri East, on-site across Mumbai and by distant consultation using floor plans. She can also suggest crystal and Reiki support for a calmer space.
