EV Charger and Parking Vastu: Where to Put the Charging Point
Vastu texts never mentioned electric cars, but the logic of the elements still applies. Here is where an EV charging point fits in a bungalow or society car park, and the safety steps that matter more than any direction.

01
What does Vastu say about EV chargers?
Vastu texts say nothing directly about EV chargers, because they were written long before electric vehicles existed; the guidance here applies the logic of the five elements, not a classical rule. It is a sensible modern adaptation, and electrical safety always overrules it.
In the पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements) framework, electricity, heat and energy belong to Fire, which sits in the South-East. A charging point draws mains power and turns it into stored energy, so it is read as a Fire object. Vehicles themselves are linked with movement and the Air zone of the North-West. These two ideas are the starting point for placing a charger.
02
Which direction is good for car parking as per Vastu?
The North-West and the South-East are the two traditional choices for parking, with the North-East kept light and open. A bungalow owner can usually choose; a flat owner in a society usually cannot, and that is fine.
Our detailed guide to car parking and garage Vastu covers garage direction, which way a parked car should face and how to live with an allotted society slot. The short version for flats: your home's Vastu is read from your flat, not from the stilt or basement below it.
03
Where should an EV charger be placed in a bungalow?
In a bungalow, the South-East of the garage or porch is the natural place for an EV charger, because it is the zone of अग्नि (Agni, the fire element). Our article on Agneya, the fire zone in the South-East explains why electrical equipment such as meters and inverters sits comfortably there.
01
South-East
The first choice. Mount the charger on a solid wall in this part of the garage or porch, under cover.
02
North-West
Acceptable, especially when the garage is already here. This is the zone of वायु (Vayu, the air element), which suits vehicles and movement.
03
South or West
Workable for an open car porch, with the charger fixed to a wall rather than on a free-standing post in the rain.
04
North-East
Avoid if you can. This is the zone Vastu keeps lightest and calmest.
04
Why should the North-East be kept free of an EV charger?
The North-East is kept free of chargers because it is the ईशान्य (Ishanya), the Water zone, which Vastu keeps light, clean and calm, and heat and electrical equipment sit uneasily there. Fire and water are traditionally kept apart.
If the North-East is the only safe place your electrician can install a charger, safety wins. Keep the unit and cable tidy, store nothing around it, keep the area well lit, and ask a consultant about simple non-structural balancing. Our article on Ishanya, the North-East corner explains why this zone matters so much.
05
Can you install an EV charger in society parking?
Yes, an EV charger can often be installed at your allotted society slot, but only with the managing committee's written permission, through a certified electrician, and following the society's rules and any current local guidelines. Every society handles this a little differently.
Direction matters little here. Your slot is allotted, the car park belongs to the whole building, and the charger goes where your slot is. Some societies prefer a shared charging bay instead; if yours does, accept it calmly. Vastu attention belongs to your flat.
01
Supply and metering
How the charger is connected and accounted for is decided by the committee and the electrician together.
02
Cable route
A fixed, protected route along walls or the ceiling, never loose across the driveway or the floor.
03
Position of the unit
On a wall or pillar beside your slot, clear of other cars and of people walking past.
04
Shared rules
Agree on charging etiquette, the emergency switch and whom to call if something goes wrong.
06
What safety rules come before Vastu for EV charging?
Safety comes before any direction: use a certified electrician, a charger approved by the vehicle or charger maker, a properly protected dedicated supply, and never an extension cord or multi-plug adapter. No Vastu benefit is worth an electrical risk.
01
Certified electrician
Installation, earthing and protection should be done and checked by a qualified electrician, never improvised.
02
No extension cords
Never charge through an extension board, spike guard or long household cable. They are not made for this kind of continuous load.
03
Dedicated point
Use only the charger or socket the manufacturer and electrician recommend, not a shared household socket.
04
Monsoon protection
In an open porch or stilt, use a weather-rated unit with a cover, mounted well above where water collects.
05
Clear surroundings
No fuel cans, paper, cartons, old tyres or stored furniture around the charger.
06
Warning signs
If you notice heat, sparks, a burning smell or a cracked cable, stop charging and call the electrician.
07
How can you keep the charging area balanced as per Vastu?
Keep the charging area clean, bright and uncluttered, because Vastu values order and light in every zone, including the garage. These small habits also make charging safer.
01
Coil the cable
Hang it on a hook or holster when not in use, so it never lies across the floor.
02
Good lighting
A working light above the charger makes plugging in safe at night and keeps the corner from feeling neglected.
03
Suitable colours
In a South-East charging bay, cream, peach or soft terracotta on the wall suits the Fire zone.
04
Keep water at a distance
Store buckets, hoses and car-wash supplies a little away from the charger, for safety as much as for balance.
08
Where should the charging point go in a new bungalow design?
In a new bungalow, plan the garage and the charging point together at the drawing stage, placing the garage in the North-West or South-East and the charger in its South-East part where the wiring allows. It costs far less to plan conduits now than to chase walls later.
Bring the architect, electrician and Vastu consultant together so the driveway, gate and garage flow well; our guide to main gate and compound wall Vastu for bungalows covers the entrance side, and bungalow Vastu covers the whole house.
09
When should you consult a Vastu expert about parking and EV charging?
Consult a Vastu expert when you are designing a bungalow, redeveloping a plot, or when the only available charger location falls in the North-East. These are the moments when a little advice saves rework.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya reviews plots, bungalows and flats with on-site compass readings across Mumbai from her Andheri East office, or through distant consultation using floor plans and photographs. Her remedies are non-structural, and electrical decisions always stay with your certified electrician.
Questions
Frequently asked
Which direction is good for an EV charger as per Vastu?
The South-East is considered the most suitable direction for an EV charger, because it is the Fire zone linked with electricity and heat. The North-West is acceptable. This applies element logic to a modern object rather than a classical rule.
Can an EV charger be installed in the North-East?
It is better avoided, because Vastu keeps the North-East light and calm. If it is the only safe location, safety comes first; keep the area tidy and well lit and ask a consultant about simple balancing remedies.
Do I need society permission to install an EV charger?
Yes, in a housing society you should get the managing committee's written permission before installing a charger in the common parking. Follow the society's rules and any current local guidelines, and use a certified electrician.
Can I charge my electric car with an extension cord?
No. Never charge an electric vehicle through an extension cord, multi-plug or spike guard. Use only the charger and socket recommended by the manufacturer and installed by a certified electrician.
Does my society parking slot direction affect my flat's Vastu?
Very little. Your flat's Vastu is read from the flat itself. A society slot in a less favoured direction is common in Mumbai and does not undo a well-arranged home.
