Gas Stove Direction as per Vastu: Where to Place It and Which Way to Face

Where should the gas stove go, and which way should you face while cooking? A practical Vastu guide for Mumbai kitchens where the platform, sink and gas line are already fixed.

Gas Stove Direction as per Vastu: Where to Place It and Which Way to Face

01

Which direction should the gas stove be in as per Vastu?

The gas stove is traditionally placed in the South-East corner of the kitchen as per Vastu. This corner is called आग्नेय (Agneya, the South-East) and it belongs to अग्नि (Agni, the fire deity).

Vastu links each direction with one of the पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements). Fire sits in the South-East, so the cooking flame is said to be at home there. Even when the kitchen is elsewhere in the flat, the stove can go in its South-East part.

The North-West is the commonly accepted second choice. It is the Air zone, and air feeds a flame.

02

Which way should you face while cooking?

You should ideally face East while cooking. East is the direction of Surya, the sun, and is traditionally linked with health and a fresh start to the day.

In practice this means the stove sits against the eastern wall of the kitchen, so the cook looks East. Where that is not possible, practitioners differ. Many accept facing North or West. Facing South for long hours is traditionally avoided, though this is a custom and not a reason for worry.

Use a compass to check, not the builder's brochure. Our free direction finder shows which way your platform really faces.

03

Why are the sink and the stove kept apart?

The sink and the stove are kept apart because Water and Fire are opposing elements in Vastu. Placing them side by side is said to create friction in the kitchen, and by extension in the home.

Traditionally the sink, the water filter and the drinking water pot go towards the North or North-East of the kitchen, and the stove stays in the South-East. A gap of two to three feet between them is a common working rule.

04

What can you do if the stove cannot move on a fixed kitchen platform?

If the stove cannot move, you work with position, facing and separation inside the space you already have. Most Mumbai flats come with a granite platform, a fixed sink and a piped gas point, so breaking the slab is rarely sensible or needed.

  • 01

    Slide the stove

Move the stove along the platform towards its South-East end, as far as the gas pipe safely allows.

  • 02

    Use the right burner

On a three or four burner hob, do most of the daily cooking on the burner nearest the South-East.

  • 03

    Add a divider

If the sink is right beside the stove, stand a wooden chopping board or a small ceramic partition between the two.

  • 04

    Keep it clean

Wipe the burners every night and get a weak or uneven flame repaired promptly.

05

How do the different stove positions compare?

The South-East is the first choice, the North-West is the accepted alternative, and the North-East, South-West and centre are the positions traditionally avoided. Here is a quick comparison.

  • 01

    South-East

The Fire zone. Traditionally the natural home of the stove.

  • 02

    North-West

The Air zone. A widely accepted second choice.

  • 03

    North-East

The Water zone, kept light and clean. A stove here is traditionally avoided, and is balanced with remedies when it cannot be changed.

  • 04

    South-West

The Earth zone, linked with stability. Usually kept for heavy storage, not for fire.

  • 05

    Centre

The ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) is kept open, so an island hob in the middle of the home is not advised.

06

What should you avoid around the gas stove?

Avoid placing the stove in a direct line with the main door or right under a windy window, and do not ignore old gas fittings. Some of these are Vastu customs and some are plain safety.

  • 01

    In line with the door

A stove seen straight from the main door or the kitchen door is traditionally screened with a curtain or a half partition.

  • 02

    Under a windy window

Sea breeze can blow out a low flame. A window to the side works better than one directly behind the burners.

  • 03

    Old fittings

Replace cracked gas tubes and have the regulator checked regularly. A safe kitchen is part of a balanced one.

07

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consult a Vastu expert when the kitchen falls in the North-East or South-West, when you are planning a modular kitchen, or before you buy a flat and want the layout checked. A full review looks at the kitchen together with the rest of the home, not in isolation. You can get a first idea with the Vastu score tool.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can the gas stove be placed in the North-West?

Yes, the North-West is the commonly accepted second choice for a gas stove when the South-East is not available. It is the Air zone, and air supports fire. Place the stove so that you still face East while cooking if the layout allows, and keep the sink at a distance from the burners.

Is it wrong to cook facing South?

Facing South while cooking is traditionally avoided, but it is a custom and not a cause for fear. If your platform leaves no other option, keep the area bright, clean and well ventilated. A consultant can suggest a simple non-structural remedy after checking the compass reading of the whole flat.

Can the stove and sink be on the same platform?

Yes, the stove and sink can share a platform, and in most flats they do. Keep as much gap as the slab allows, ideally two to three feet. If they sit side by side, place a wooden board or small partition between them so that water and fire are visually separated.

Where should the gas cylinder be kept?

The gas cylinder is traditionally kept in the South-East of the kitchen, close to the stove, since it belongs to the Fire element. Whatever the direction, store it upright in a ventilated spot, away from the sink and from direct heat, and follow your gas supplier's safety instructions.

Do induction plates and microwaves follow the same rule?

Yes, induction plates, ovens and microwaves are treated as Fire appliances and are traditionally placed towards the South-East or South of the kitchen. They are easier to shift than a piped gas stove, which makes them a handy way to bring the cooking activity closer to the Fire zone.
