01
Which direction should the fridge be placed as per Vastu?
The fridge should be placed in the South-West, West or South of the kitchen as per Vastu, and not in the North-East corner. This is the same rule given in our guide to kitchen Vastu for modern open kitchens, and it applies to closed and open kitchens alike.
A fridge is one of the heaviest objects in a kitchen and it runs day and night, so where it stands shapes the feel of the room. Placing it along a South or West wall also leaves the North and East sides free for the sink, the water purifier and the window, which is how a well-planned kitchen tends to work anyway.
02
Why does the fridge belong in the South-West, West or South?
The fridge belongs in the South-West, West or South because Vastu places heavy, stable objects and stored provisions in these zones and keeps the North-East light. नैऋत्य (Nairutya, the South-West) is the Earth zone, associated with weight, storage and stability.
A fridge is essentially a store of food, so it sits naturally with the pantry and tall units, which also suit the South and West walls. Vastu aims to balance the पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements) across the home, and a large appliance in the North-East would weigh down the corner meant for Water and lightness.
Other placements for a fridge appear online, and shops are sometimes planned differently. For a home kitchen, VastuKimaya follows the South-West, West or South placement in its room-by-room kitchen guidance.
03
Is a fridge in the North-East of the kitchen a problem?
A fridge in the North-East corner of the kitchen is traditionally avoided, because this is ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East), the zone of Water and clarity that Vastu keeps light and open. It is also one of the most common kitchen compromises in Mumbai flats, and it is easy to soften without any construction.
01
Shift it along the wall
Even moving the fridge a little towards the West or South side of the kitchen takes it out of the exact corner.
02
Keep the corner bright
Keep the area around the fridge clean, uncluttered and well lit.
03
Nothing piled above it
Avoid using the fridge as a shelf for medicines, bills, cash or idols.
04
Ask for a remedy
If it cannot move, a consultant can suggest simple balancing remedies after seeing the whole layout.
04
Can the fridge be next to the gas stove?
The fridge is better kept a little away from the gas stove than right beside it, because the stove belongs to the Fire zone of the South-East and heat and cold work against each other. There is a practical reason too: appliance manuals generally advise keeping a fridge away from heat sources, since a fridge pressed against a hot hob has to work harder.
For the stove's own position and facing, see our gas stove direction guide. If your kitchen is narrow and the two must be close:
01
Leave a counter between them
Even a short stretch of platform between the hob and the fridge helps.
02
Add a side panel
A tall unit or heat-resistant side panel between them separates them visually and practically.
03
Respect the ventilation gap
Leave the space behind and beside the fridge that its manual recommends.
05
Where should the microwave and oven be kept as per Vastu?
The microwave, oven, OTG and induction plate are kept in the South-East of the kitchen, or towards the South, because they are heating appliances and belong to the Fire element of आग्नेय (Agneya, the South-East).
A microwave on a bracket or in a tall unit on the South-East side of the hob follows this neatly in a modular kitchen. Avoid placing it directly over the sink or beside the water purifier, so that fire and water stay apart, and check the fridge's manual before resting a microwave on it.
06
Where should the RO water purifier be kept?
The RO water purifier is kept in the North-East or North of the kitchen, near the sink, because drinking water belongs to the Water element of the North-East. This matches the placement of the sink and drinking-water pot in a Vastu kitchen, and our water tank guide gives the same advice.
Mount the purifier on the North or East wall where the plumbing allows, and fix drips quickly, since a leaking purifier is both a Vastu and a hygiene concern. If the plumbing forces it elsewhere, keep it clean, covered and leak-free; that matters more than a few feet of direction.
07
Where do the mixer, toaster, kettle and dishwasher go?
Small heating and motor appliances such as the mixer, toaster, kettle and coffee machine suit the South-East or South of the kitchen near the cooking zone, while a dishwasher sits beside the sink. Here is a quick map of the whole kitchen:
01
Mixer, toaster and kettle
On the South-East or South counter, unplugged and put away after use so the platform stays clear.
02
Chimney
Directly above the hob, wherever the stove is; clean its filter regularly.
03
Dishwasher
Next to the sink, on the side away from the stove.
04
Fridge
South-West, West or South of the kitchen, not the North-East corner.
05
Water purifier
North-East or North, near the sink.
06
Grain and heavy storage
Tall units along the South and West walls.
07
New sockets
If appliances need more points, ask a licensed electrician to add them rather than running extension boards across the counter.
08
Can the fridge be kept in the living room or dining area?
Yes, the fridge can be kept in the living room or dining area when the kitchen is too small, which is common in Mumbai flats. Place it along the South, West or South-West wall of that room, not in its North-East corner and not in the centre of the home.
Keep it close to the kitchen door so it feels part of the kitchen zone, and keep the area around it neat, since it is on view to guests. Avoid placing it right beside the mandir. A fridge in a bedroom is better avoided, because its hum and light can disturb rest. Our guide to Vastu for 1BHK and 2BHK flats has more ideas for compact layouts.
09
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert when you are planning a modular kitchen, since appliance positions are far easier to set on the drawing than after the granite is laid, or when the kitchen itself sits in the North-East or the centre of the home.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya reviews kitchens on-site across Mumbai from her Andheri East office, and through distant consultations using floor plans and photographs. Her remedies are non-structural, so the platform, plumbing and appliances can usually stay where they are.
Questions
Frequently asked
Which direction should the fridge be placed as per Vastu?
The fridge should be placed in the South-West, West or South of the kitchen as per Vastu, and not in the North-East corner. These zones suit heavy objects and stored food, and they keep the North-East light.
Can the fridge be kept in the North-East?
A fridge in the North-East corner is traditionally avoided, because Vastu keeps that zone light and open. If it cannot move, shift it slightly along the wall, keep the area clean and bright, and ask a consultant about a simple remedy.
Can the fridge be next to the gas stove?
It is better to keep the fridge a little away from the gas stove. Leave a stretch of counter or a tall unit between them, and keep the ventilation gap the fridge's manual recommends.
Where should the microwave and water purifier be kept?
The microwave suits the South-East or South of the kitchen with the other heating appliances. The RO water purifier belongs in the North-East or North, near the sink, keeping fire and water apart.
Can the fridge be kept in the living room or dining area?
Yes. When the kitchen is small, place the fridge along the South, West or South-West wall of the living or dining area, close to the kitchen, and away from the North-East corner, the centre and the mandir.
