Washing Machine and Utility Area Vastu

01

Where should a washing machine be placed as per Vastu?

A washing machine is preferably placed in the North-West of the home or of the utility room, and the South-East is also acceptable. The North-West is governed by Vayu, the Air element, and is associated with movement and change, which suits a machine that spins, drains and keeps things moving.

The South-East, the Fire zone of Agni, suits electrical appliances in general, so a washing machine there is also comfortable. When neither zone is available, the West can be used. In compact Mumbai flats, a practical, safe placement always comes first, and remedies can balance the rest.

02

Where should a washing machine not be placed?

Avoid placing a washing machine in the North-East or at the centre of the home. The North-East, called ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East), is traditionally kept light, clean and calm, and a noisy appliance with dirty water flowing out does not suit it.

The ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) is also kept open, so a machine or utility storage there is ideally moved. The South-West is the Earth zone of stability; a heavy, stationary appliance is less of a concern here than in the North-East, but water drainage and dampness in the South-West are generally avoided.

If you are renovating, plan the plumbing points for the washing machine at the design stage. Moving an inlet and drain by a metre or two during a kitchen or bathroom renovation is simple, and it can shift the machine out of the North-East without any later compromise.

03

Can a washing machine be kept in the bathroom?

Yes, a washing machine can be kept in the bathroom, which is common in Mumbai flats, as long as it is placed safely and the bathroom is kept dry. Within the bathroom, the North-West or West side is preferable.

  • 01

    Electrical safety

Use a properly earthed socket away from the shower area, installed by a qualified electrician.

  • 02

    Raised stand

Place the machine on a stand to keep it off wet floors.

  • 03

    Ventilation

Run the exhaust fan and keep the door open after washing to avoid dampness.

  • 04

    Keep it closed

Close the machine lid or door when not in use, and keep the bathroom door closed.

04

Is the balcony a good place for a washing machine?

A balcony or utility balcony is a good place for a washing machine if it lies in the North-West, West or South-East of the flat. Many newer flats include a dry balcony next to the kitchen, often in exactly these zones.

Protect the machine from rain and direct sun with a cover or enclosure, and make sure drainage flows cleanly. If your only balcony is in the North-East, keep the machine in the corner furthest from the North-East point, keep the area very tidy and consider a light-coloured enclosure.

05

Where should clothes be dried as per Vastu?

Clothes are preferably dried in the North-West or West, where air movement helps them dry and the zone's qualities suit the activity. The South-East, with its association with Fire and warmth, also works well.

  • 01

    Avoid the North-East

Keep this zone free of drying racks and hanging laundry.

  • 02

Do not dry in the centre

Avoid drying stands in the middle of the living room.

  • 03

    Bring clothes in

Do not leave dried clothes hanging for days; fold and store them.

  • 04

    Sunlight

Morning sunlight is refreshing for bed linen and towels wherever it reaches.

06

How should a utility area be organised?

A utility area should be organised so that it stays dry, ventilated and clutter-free, with heavy storage on the South or West walls. Utility spaces often collect broken buckets, old detergent bottles and unused brooms, which Vastu associates with stagnant energy.

  • 01

    Brooms and mops

Store them out of sight, lying flat or hanging, in the South-West or West of the utility area, not in the North-East or kitchen.

  • 02

    Detergents and cleaners

Keep them in closed cabinets, safely away from children.

  • 03

    Dustbin

Keep a covered dustbin in the South-West or North-West of the area, emptied daily.

  • 04

    Heavy items

Water drums, steel cupboards and tool boxes suit the South or West walls.

  • 05

    Declutter monthly

Discard empty containers, broken pegs and old cloths regularly.

07

Why do leaks and dampness matter in Vastu?

Leaks and dampness matter because water in Vastu is associated with wealth, and a continuous leak is traditionally seen as a symbol of steady outflow. Practically, dampness also damages walls and can affect health.

Check the inlet pipe, drain hose and tap regularly, and repair drips promptly. Wipe the floor after every wash and clean the machine's filter and door seal so they stay fresh. A small bowl of rock salt, changed regularly, can be kept in a damp-feeling corner as a simple space-cleansing remedy.

Run an empty hot wash with a little vinegar or a machine cleaner every few weeks to prevent odours. A fresh-smelling utility area feels lighter, and it also keeps clothes and towels pleasant for the whole family.

08

When to consult a Vastu expert

A consultation helps when the only possible spot for the washing machine is in a sensitive zone, or when you are designing a new kitchen, balcony or utility area. Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar reviews the whole layout and suggests practical, non-structural remedies such as colour, metal or pyramids where needed.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which direction is suitable for a washing machine?

The North-West is preferred, and the South-East is also acceptable. The West can be used if neither is available.

Can a washing machine be kept in the kitchen?

Yes, a washing machine can be kept in the kitchen if space requires it. Place it in the North-West corner of the kitchen, away from the stove and sink, and keep the area dry.

Is a washing machine in the North-East bad?

It is not ideal, as the North-East is kept light and calm. If it cannot be moved, keep the area very clean and dry and ask about suitable remedies.

Where should brooms and mops be kept as per Vastu?

Keep brooms and mops out of sight in the South-West or West of the utility area, not in the North-East, pooja area or kitchen.

Can clothes be dried in the North-East balcony?

It is better to dry clothes in the North-West, West or South-East. If the North-East balcony is the only option, remove clothes promptly and keep the space tidy.
