Smart Home Vastu: Where to Put the Wi-Fi Router, CCTV and Smart Speakers
Routers, cameras, smart speakers and chargers now fill every Mumbai flat. Here is how Vastu's element logic places them, and how to balance it with signal strength, safety and good sleep.

01
What does Vastu say about Wi-Fi routers and smart devices?
Vastu says nothing about Wi-Fi routers directly, because the classical texts were written long before electricity. What practitioners do today is apply the old element logic to new objects, and that logic works surprisingly well.
Electronics carry heat, light and current, so they are linked with fire, the element of अग्नि (Agni, the fire deity) in the South-East. Wireless signals move unseen through the home, which also gives them a quality of air, the element of वायु (Vayu, the wind deity) in the North-West. Between these two zones you can place almost every gadget you own.
02
Where should the Wi-Fi router be placed as per Vastu?
The Wi-Fi router is usually placed in the South-East of the home, or the South-East of the room it sits in. This keeps it in the fire zone and away from the calm ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East).
A router also has a practical job: to reach every room. Signal reaches furthest from a central, raised and open spot. If your South-East corner is at one end of a long flat, choose the South-East side of the most central room, usually the hall, rather than a far corner.
01
Height
Keep the router on a wall shelf or bracket at roughly mid-wall height, not on the floor or behind the sofa.
02
Open air
Avoid closed metal cabinets, the back of the TV and spots behind mirrors, which weaken the signal.
03
Places to skip
Keep it out of the mandir, the North-East corner and the South-West master bedroom.
04
When coverage wins
If one placement simply does not reach a room, a small signal extender is fine. Put it on the South-East or North-West side of that room where possible.
03
Where should a smart speaker be placed in the home?
A smart speaker is usually placed in the South-East or the North-West of the living room. The South-East suits it as an electronic object, and the North-West suits its role as a voice that talks, plays music and connects people, which matches the zone of communication described in our North-West communication guide.
Keep speakers out of the pooja corner, where silence and prayer belong, and away from the head of the bed. Many families also mute the microphone at night or in private rooms. That is a privacy choice as much as a Vastu one, and both point the same way.
04
Where should a CCTV camera be installed at the main door?
A CCTV camera or video doorbell should be installed beside or just above the main door frame, angled outwards so it sees who arrives without blocking the door. The door must still open fully and smoothly, which matters in Vastu because the entrance is treated as the mouth of the home.
Run the cable neatly along the frame instead of looping it over the toran or nameplate. In a society corridor, check your society's rules and angle the camera at your own threshold, not into a neighbour's flat. Our guide to main door Vastu for flats covers the rest of the entrance.
01
Indoor cameras
Point them at entrances and common areas, never into bedrooms or bathrooms, and tell everyone in the household, including domestic staff, where they are.
02
The recorder
A recorder box or hub belongs with the router, on the South-East side, not inside the mandir cabinet.
05
Where should chargers, TVs and screens go as per Vastu?
Chargers, TVs and screens go towards the South-East of the home or room, and they stay out of the South-West bedroom wherever possible. A single charging station on a South-East shelf of the hall keeps phones out of bedrooms and gives the family one place to drop devices at night.
If the bedroom has to hold a TV or a work laptop, keep it on the South-East side, close a cabinet or drape a cloth over the screen at night, and never charge phones under the pillow. We have covered screen-free corners in depth in our digital detox guide, and desk set-ups in our work-from-home Vastu guide.
06
How do you manage cable clutter as per Vastu?
You manage cable clutter by bundling, lifting and hiding wires, because tangled cables on the floor feel like visual noise and also collect dust and trip people. In Vastu, clutter is treated as stuck energy, and a knot of wires behind the TV is one of the most common modern examples.
01
Lift extension boards
Fix them to the wall or furniture, off the floor, so mopping water never reaches them.
02
Use trays and sleeves
A cable tray under the desk or a fabric sleeve along the wall turns five wires into one neat line.
03
Label and remove
Label each plug, and remove old chargers and dead adapters you no longer use.
04
Do not overload
Several heavy appliances on one board is a fire risk. Ask a licensed electrician to add sockets where needed.
07
Should you switch off the Wi-Fi router at night?
Switching off the Wi-Fi router at night is a helpful habit for many families, because it brings a clear end to screen time and makes the home quieter for sleep. A simple plug timer can do it automatically, as long as no one needs the connection for work or a medical device at night.
We make no claim here about signals and health. The reason is simpler: a home where phones rest in the hall and lights go down at a fixed hour usually sleeps better. If sleep problems continue, please see a doctor; Vastu complements and does not replace medical care. Our guide to Vastu for better sleep has more bedroom changes.

When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert when you are planning interiors or rewiring a flat, when the South-East is taken up by a bedroom or toilet and devices have nowhere to go, or when the home feels restless despite a tidy set-up. Wiring is far easier to plan before the carpenter arrives.

She consults on-site across Mumbai from VastuKimaya's Andheri East office, or through distant consultation using your floor plan. Questions
Frequently asked
In which direction should a Wi-Fi router be placed as per Vastu?
A Wi-Fi router is usually placed in the South-East as per Vastu, because electronics belong to the fire element. If that corner is far from the rest of the flat, use the South-East side of the central room so the signal still reaches every room.
Can I keep the Wi-Fi router in the bedroom?
It is better not to keep the Wi-Fi router in the bedroom, especially a South-West master bedroom, which Vastu keeps calm for rest. If there is no other option, place it on the South-East side of the room and switch it off at night.
Which direction should a CCTV camera face at home?
A CCTV camera at home should face outwards from the main door, so it sees visitors arriving without blocking the door itself. Mount it beside or above the frame, keep the cable neat, and do not point it into a neighbour's flat or private rooms.
Can I keep a smart speaker in the pooja room?
It is better not to keep a smart speaker in the pooja room, which Vastu keeps quiet and free of electronics. Place it in the South-East or North-West of the living room. A small speaker can be carried in for an aarti and taken out again.
Is it bad to keep electronics in the North-East as per Vastu?
Heavy electronics are usually kept away from the North-East, because this zone of water and clarity is meant to stay light and calm. Move routers, chargers and screens to the South-East where you can, and keep the North-East for prayer, plants or quiet sitting.
