Dev Deepawali and Kartik Purnima at Home: Where to Light the Lamps

01

When is Dev Deepawali in 2026?

According to most panchangs, Kartik Purnima and Dev Deepawali fall on Tuesday 24 November 2026. The full-moon tithi can begin on the previous day, so lamp-lighting and bathing timings vary between sources; confirm them for your city with a local panchang or your family priest.

The day comes about a fortnight after Diwali and a few days after Tulsi Vivah, so for many homes it is the last lamp-lit evening of the festival season.

02

What is Dev Deepawali and why is it celebrated?

देव दीपावली (Dev Deepawali, the Diwali of the gods) is the full-moon festival on which, in tradition, the gods themselves come down to celebrate, and lamps are lit in their honour. It is celebrated most famously on the ghats of Varanasi, where the river steps are lined with diyas, but it is also kept quietly at home across India.

Kartik Purnima is linked in many traditions with Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura, which is why it is also called Tripuri Purnima, and the whole month of Kartik is associated with दीपदान (deepdaan, the offering of a lamp). The same full moon is also when many Sikh families celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti. Households mark the day differently; the common thread is light offered with care.

03

Where should diyas be placed at home on Dev Deepawali?

Light the main door first, then the north-east, then the east, the tulsi and the kitchen. This follows the same logic as Diwali, light at the entrance and the sacred corner before anywhere else, on a smaller and quieter scale; where light belongs in a home explains the reasoning in more depth.

  • 01

    Main door

A pair of diyas, one on each side of the threshold, lit first and kept burning longest.

  • 02

    North-East

The main lamp of the evening, at the mandir in the ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East), lit while facing east or north. More on this zone in Ishanya, the sacred north-east corner.

  • 03

    East

A lamp at an east window or on an east balcony, set well back from the edge.

  • 04

    The tulsi

A small diya on a plate beside the tulsi, continuing what began at Tulsi Vivah, kept a hand's span from the leaves.

  • 05

    South-East

The kitchen, the zone of Agni and the fire element, suits a lamp near the cooking platform, away from the gas pipe and anything that catches.

  • 06

    North

One lamp in the north of the living room, Kubera's direction, if there is a safe, stable surface for it.

04

Which parts of the home need fewer lamps?

The south-west and the centre of the home need the fewest lamps, and the centre should have no flame on the floor at all. This is about balance, not fear: the south-west is the heavy, settled zone and the centre is meant to stay open and easy to move through.

  • 01

    The centre

Keep the floor of the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) clear and light it with a soft overhead light or a hanging lantern rather than diyas underfoot. See keeping the centre open.

  • 02

    South-West

A single steady lamp is plenty if you wish to light one. The master bedroom can simply be left in soft electric light.

  • 03

    Bedrooms and children's rooms

Use LED diyas, which give the look without a flame in a room where someone may fall asleep.

  • 04

    Bathrooms

If your family lights one here, place it at the doorway rather than inside.

05

How can you do deepdaan at home without a river?

Float a diya in a wide brass or copper bowl of water placed in the north-east; it is a gentle way to make deepdaan at home. The north-east is the water zone in Vastu, so a bowl of water with a lamp on it suits the zone naturally.

Use a shallow, heavy urli that will not tip, fill it about halfway, and set it on a stable surface rather than the floor. If you go to the sea or a lake instead, leave nothing behind: many places now ask people not to release lamps, flowers or plastic into the water, and the offering lies in the lighting, not in leaving it to drift.

06

How do you light diyas safely in a flat?

Never leave a lamp burning in a room nobody is in, and keep every flame well away from curtains, blinds and anything a breeze can blow against it. In a flat, fabric and wind are the two hazards to plan around, and a few habits deal with both.

  • 01

    Never unattended

Put out every lamp before you leave the flat or go to sleep. Where no one will be in a room, use an LED diya there instead.

  • 02

    Away from curtains

Keep lamps at least an arm's length from curtains, blinds, dupattas and paper decorations, and remember that a breeze moves a curtain further than it looks.

  • 03

    Not on balcony rails

On a high floor, a lamp knocked off a rail can fall onto balconies below, where clothes are often drying. Use a wide, stable ledge or the inner side of the balcony.

  • 04

    Use a base

Stand each diya on a metal plate or a tray of sand to catch spilt oil and stop it sliding on polished tiles.

  • 05

    Shield from wind

A glass chimney or a lantern keeps the flame steady on windy evenings.

  • 06

    Children and pets

Keep flames out of their reach and out of their running path.

  • 07

    Skip flying sky lanterns

Paper lanterns released into the air can come down burning on balconies, trees and wires. A hanging akash kandil with an LED bulb gives the same glow safely.

  • 08

    Keep water at hand

Keep a bucket of water or sand, or a small fire extinguisher, within reach while lamps are lit.

07

When should you consult a Vastu expert?

Consult a Vastu expert if lighting lamps at home keeps running into the layout: no suitable spot in the north-east, a mandir that shares a wall with a toilet, or a dark entrance that no lamp seems to lift. These have non-structural answers that are easier to work out with the whole floor plan in view.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya advises homes on-site across Mumbai from her Andheri East office and through distant consultations using floor plans and photographs. For lamp direction through the rest of the year, see diya and lamp direction as per Vastu.

Questions

Frequently asked

When is Dev Deepawali in 2026?

According to most panchangs, Dev Deepawali and Kartik Purnima fall on Tuesday 24 November 2026. Timings vary because the tithi can begin the previous day, so confirm them with a local panchang or priest.

Is Dev Deepawali and Kartik Purnima the same?

They fall on the same full moon. Kartik Purnima is the name of the day, and Dev Deepawali is the festival of lamps held on it, most famously in Varanasi.

Where should we light diyas on Kartik Purnima?

Start with a pair at the main door, then the main lamp in the north-east puja area, followed by the east, the tulsi and the kitchen in the south-east. Keep the centre of the home free of flames on the floor.

How many diyas should be lit on Dev Deepawali?

No number is required. Families light anything from a few lamps to many; keeping each one safe and watched matters more than the count.

Can we use LED diyas on Dev Deepawali?

Yes. LED diyas are a sensible choice for bedrooms, children's rooms and any spot nobody can watch, with real flames kept for the entrance and the puja.
