Diya and Lamp Direction as per Vastu

Lighting a diya is important in Vastu because light represents the Fire element, awareness and the removal of darkness, both in the home and in the mind. A small flame is one of the simplest ways to bring warmth and a sense of prayer into a space.

The दीप (deep, the lamp) has been part of Indian homes for generations — at dawn, at dusk, on festivals and at the start of any good work. In Vastu terms, a lit diya is believed to purify the atmosphere and lift the energy of the zone in which it burns.

A familiar prayer recited while lighting the lamp begins: शुभं करोति कल्याणम् (Shubham karoti kalyanam) — 'the light that brings auspiciousness and well-being'.

The diya flame should ideally face East or North as per Vastu. The East is associated with Surya, the sun, health and new beginnings, and the North with Kubera and prosperity.

Place the diya in front of the deity in the North-East pooja area, on a stable plate or stand, at a comfortable height. The ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East) is the zone of the Water element, clarity and spiritual energy, which is why the mandir belongs here.

Keep the lamp on a brass or copper plate rather than directly on wood or cloth. Many families place the ghee lamp towards the right side of the deity and an oil lamp towards the left, though customs vary by region and family — follow what your household practises.

Yes, lighting a lamp near the main entrance in the evening is a traditional way to welcome positive energy and Lakshmi into the home. It also keeps the entrance bright, which Vastu considers important.

In a Mumbai society building, an electric diya or a small lamp inside a glass holder beside the door is often more practical than an open flame in a common corridor. Keep the entrance itself clean, free of shoes and well lit after sunset.

Ghee and sesame oil are the most commonly used fuels for a diya, and both are considered auspicious. Ghee lamps are traditionally associated with prayer and positivity, while sesame oil lamps are often lit in the evening.

Mustard oil and other oils are also used according to regional customs. Choose a clean cotton wick and trim it so the flame burns steadily without heavy smoke. Clay diyas are popular during festivals, and brass diyas are durable for daily use.

During Diwali and festivals, place lamps at the main entrance, in the North-East pooja area, on window sills and balconies, and in any dark corners that usually feel heavy. The idea is that no part of the home is left in darkness.

Light diyas safely by placing them on stable, fire-proof bases, away from curtains, children and pets, and never leaving an open flame unattended. Safety is part of good energy.
