Storeroom Vastu: Where to Keep Heavy Storage

The storeroom is best placed in the South-West of the home, with the South and West as good alternatives. These zones carry the earth element and are meant to be heavier and more closed than the North and East.

The South-West is ruled by Nairutya and linked with stability. Heavy items here are believed to ground the household, while the North and East stay light and open for light, air and opportunity. This simple principle, heavy in the South-West and light in the North-East, underlies most storage decisions in Vastu.

Heavy storage should avoid the North-East because this is ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East), the zone of the water element and spiritual energy, which should stay light and clean. Loading it with cupboards, cartons or old furniture is considered to block clarity and the flow of fresh energy.

The same applies to the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre), which should remain open. If your only storage is in the North-East, keep it low, light and very organised, and consider moving the heaviest items elsewhere.

Grains and kitchen provisions are traditionally stored in the South-West or West of the kitchen, or in the North-West of the home. A well-stocked grain store is associated with abundance, so it should never be allowed to become empty, damp or infested.

A storeroom should hold useful items you genuinely need, such as seasonal clothes, luggage, festival decorations, tools and bulk supplies. It should not become a hiding place for broken, expired or unwanted things.

Think about safety as well as energy. Heavy boxes belong on lower shelves, with lighter items above, so nothing falls when a shelf is opened. Keep a clear path inside the storeroom, avoid blocking electrical boards or water valves, and make sure children cannot reach sharp tools, medicines or cleaning chemicals.

In a Mumbai flat, storeroom Vastu works through lofts, wardrobes and built-in cupboards rather than a separate room. The same principle applies: place the heaviest storage on the South and West walls of each room.

Lofts above the South or West walls of bedrooms and the kitchen are ideal. A loft above the main door or in the North-East of the living room is less suitable; keep it light if it already exists. Under-bed storage should hold only light bedding rather than old papers or broken things.

The storeroom should be dry, ventilated, organised and reasonably lit, even though it is not used daily. Mumbai's humid climate makes damp and fungus a real concern in closed rooms.

Use neutral or earthy colours such as beige, light brown or cream. Keep a small window or exhaust fan, check for leaks before the monsoon, and use moisture absorbers. Doors should close fully, and heavy shelving should be fixed securely to the wall for safety.

Clear storage at least once or twice a year, ideally before Diwali and before the monsoon. Regular clearing keeps the storeroom from turning into stagnant energy that weighs on the home.

Ask three questions about each item: have I used it in the last year, do I need it, and is it in working order? Donate, recycle or discard the rest. A lighter storeroom is easier to maintain and, from a Vastu view, supports a lighter home.

A simple list taped inside the storeroom door, noting what is stored where, saves time and prevents duplicate buying. It also makes the twice-yearly clear-out quicker, because you can see at a glance what has not been touched for months.
