Vastu for Stress-Free Homes
Gentle Vastu for stress at home: decluttering, light and air, sleeping direction, a quiet corner, calming colours and sound — practical steps that support a calmer everyday life.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
Can Vastu help reduce stress at home?
Vastu can help make your home feel calmer and more supportive, which may make everyday stress a little easier to carry. It does this through order, light, fresh air and a layout that lets you rest properly.
Stress has many causes — work, money, relationships, health — and Vastu cannot remove them. Vastu, Reiki and crystals complement and do not replace medical or psychological care. If stress is affecting your sleep, appetite, relationships or ability to function, please speak to a doctor or counsellor.
If you are struggling, please reach out to a mental-health professional. In India you can call the free Tele-MANAS helpline on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416), available 24×7.
02
Why does clutter make a home feel stressful?
Clutter makes a home feel stressful because it keeps reminding you of unfinished tasks and blocks the free movement of energy and people. In Vastu, clutter is associated with stagnant energy, especially in the centre and the North-East.
Start small so it does not become another source of pressure:
01
One zone at a time
Clear one shelf, one drawer or one corner a day.
02
The centre first
Keep the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) open and light.
03
The North-East next
Remove heavy boxes, laundry piles and dustbins from this calm zone.
04
Broken items
Repair or discard stopped clocks, broken gadgets and cracked mirrors.
05
Paper piles
Sort bills and documents into one folder or box.
03
How do light and air affect a calm home?
Natural light and fresh air make a home feel lighter and more alive, so open windows each morning, especially on the East and North sides. Morning light from the East is associated in Vastu with renewal and fresh प्राण (prana, life energy).
In Mumbai flats with limited windows, use sheer curtains, keep window grills clean and avoid blocking windows with furniture. In the evening, switch to warm, soft lighting, which is more restful than harsh white tubes.
04
Which sleeping direction supports rest?
Sleep with your head towards the South or East, which is the Vastu guidance for restful sleep. Avoid the head towards the North.
Also check the bedroom setup: a headboard against a solid wall, no beam directly over the bed, no mirror reflecting the bed, and no work laptop or piles of files on the bedside table. Switching off screens a while before sleep and keeping the room dark and quiet support rest too. If sleep problems persist, consult a doctor.
05
How do you create a quiet corner at home?
Create a quiet corner in the North-East of your home or room, where you can sit for a few minutes each day in stillness, prayer or slow breathing. The North-East is linked with the water element, clarity and शांति (shanti, peace).
You need very little: a mat or a comfortable chair, a diya or a small lamp, a plant, perhaps a crystal such as Amethyst. Keep it clean and free of phones. Some people chant ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः (Om Shanti Shanti Shanti — peace, peace, peace) or simply breathe slowly for five minutes.
06
Which colours feel calming as per Vastu?
Soft, light colours such as cream, pale green, light blue, soft lavender and warm white feel calming in living spaces and bedrooms. Avoid large areas of very dark or intense colours like black, dark grey or bright red in rooms where you rest.
You do not need to repaint: cushion covers, bedsheets, curtains and a few plants can shift the mood of a room within a day.
07
Can sound, fragrance and energy practices help?
Gentle sound, natural fragrance and simple energy practices can support a more peaceful atmosphere. They are comforting habits, not treatments.
01
Sound
A bell, singing bowl or soft devotional music in the morning; reduce constant TV noise in the evening.
02
Fragrance
A few drops of lavender in a diffuser in a ventilated bedroom; take care with children, pets and pregnancy.
03
Sea salt
A pinch of sea salt in the mopping water once a week to help the home feel fresh.
04
Plants
Healthy green plants in the North or East; remove dry ones.
05
Reiki
Some people choose Reiki sessions for relaxation, alongside any care they receive.
08
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert when your home consistently feels heavy or unsettled despite decluttering and small changes, or when you are moving and want to set up a calmer home from the start. Continue any medical or psychological support you need.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers Vastu consultations on-site across Mumbai from her Andheri East office and distant consultations using floor plans and photographs. She also offers Reiki and space cleansing, with gentle, non-structural suggestions and follow-up.
