Vastu for Recovery at Home After Illness

01

Can Vastu help recovery at home after illness?

Vastu can help make the home a calmer, cleaner and more comfortable place to rest while you recover, but it does not treat illness. Your doctor's advice, prescribed medicines, nutrition, physiotherapy and follow-up visits come first, always.

Vastu, Reiki and crystals complement and do not replace medical care. Please never delay, reduce or stop any treatment because of a Vastu suggestion. What a thoughtful space can offer is ease: fresh air, gentle light, order and a sense of प्राण (prana, life energy) flowing through the room, which many families find comforting during a difficult time.

02

Which room is suitable for someone recovering?

Where there is a choice, a bedroom in the South-West or South of the home is usually suggested for rest, because these zones are linked with stability and the earth element. If the only practical option is a room closer to the bathroom or the kitchen, choose practicality — easy access, safety and comfort matter more.

In compact Mumbai flats, you may simply use the bedroom you have. Everything below can be applied in any room.

03

Which way should the bed face during recovery?

Sleeping with the head towards the South or East is the traditional Vastu guidance, and it is a sensible default during recovery too. Avoid the head towards the North where the room allows.

Medical needs take priority over direction. If a hospital bed, oxygen equipment, a commode or a caregiver's access requires a particular position, follow what is safe and comfortable. A few other points help:

  • 01

    Solid support

Place the headboard against a solid wall rather than a window.

  • 02

    No beam overhead

Avoid sleeping directly under a beam if the room allows another position.

  • 03

    Space to move

Leave clear space on both sides of the bed for caregivers and safe movement.

  • 04

    Mirrors

Avoid a mirror directly reflecting the bed; cover it at night if it cannot be moved.

04

How can light and fresh air support a healing room?

Let in natural morning light and fresh air every day, as your doctor's advice and the weather allow. The East is the direction of the sun, and gentle morning light is associated in Vastu with renewal.

Open the windows for some time each morning, use an exhaust or fan to move stale air, and keep the room at a comfortable temperature. In the evening, soft, warm lighting is more restful than harsh overhead tubes. A small lamp that the person can reach easily is both practical and reassuring.

05

How should medicines and equipment be organised?

Keep medicines organised on a clean tray or shelf, clearly labelled and within reach, rather than scattered around the bed. In Vastu, medicines are often kept towards the North-East of the room, but safety and your doctor's or pharmacist's storage instructions come first.

Do not store medicines in the bathroom. Remove empty strips, old prescriptions and used dressings promptly. Electrical equipment such as nebulisers or monitors can sit towards the South-East of the room, with cables secured so no one trips.

06

What colours and objects feel calming in a recovery room?

Soft, light colours such as cream, pale green, light blue or soft peach feel calming and bright. You do not need to repaint; a light bedsheet, cushion covers or curtains can shift the mood.

Keep a few meaningful, uplifting objects nearby — a family photograph, a small plant, a favourite book or an image of your ishta devata. Remove heavy or sad imagery. A mild natural fragrance can help, but check with the doctor first, as scents may not suit people with breathing problems, allergies or certain treatments.

07

Are there gentle energy practices a family can use?

Yes, simple, gentle practices can support a peaceful atmosphere for the whole family. Many households light a diya in the mandir each evening, play soft devotional music or chant a short prayer such as ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः (Om Shanti Shanti Shanti — peace, peace, peace).

Reiki sessions, in person or by distance, are chosen by some families to help the person and caregivers relax. Mopping with a pinch of sea salt in the water once a week, and airing the home, can help it feel lighter. These practices support rest and calm; they are not medical treatment. Caregivers need rest too — if you are struggling emotionally, please speak to a doctor or counsellor.

08

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consider consulting a Vastu expert when the family feels the home has become heavy or unsettled over a long illness, or when you are planning changes to set up a recovery room. The aim is a calmer home, alongside the care of your medical team.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers distant consultations using floor plans and photographs — helpful when a visit is not convenient during recovery — as well as on-site visits across Mumbai from her Andheri East office. Suggestions are non-structural and gentle, and she also offers Reiki for relaxation.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which direction should a sick person sleep as per Vastu?

Vastu traditionally suggests sleeping with the head towards the South or East. During illness, medical needs, safety and comfort come first, so follow your doctor's and caregivers' advice on bed position.

Can Vastu replace medical treatment?

No, Vastu cannot replace medical treatment. It can help create a calmer, cleaner space to rest in, and it should always be used alongside the care of qualified doctors.

Where should medicines be kept as per Vastu?

Medicines are often kept in the North-East of a room in Vastu, never in the bathroom. Always follow the storage instructions on the label and keep them safely out of children's reach.

Is Reiki safe during recovery from illness?

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive practice that many people use for relaxation, but it is not a medical treatment. Check with your doctor, especially after surgery or during serious illness, and continue all prescribed care.

Do plants in a patient's room help as per Vastu?

Healthy green plants bring freshness and are welcomed in Vastu, typically in the North or East. Check with the doctor first, as soil and pollen may not suit people with low immunity or allergies.
