A Tarot Reading for the Year Ahead: What to Actually Ask
Year-ahead readings get booked in November and December. Which questions produce something useful, which ones waste the session, and what a twelve-card year spread can and cannot tell you.

01
Why year-ahead readings get booked now
Bookings for year-ahead readings rise from November, through the end of the calendar year and into January. The reason is straightforward enough: it is the point when people take stock, and a reading gives that stocktaking a structure.
It is also the point when the question people arrive with is usually the least useful one they could ask. Getting the question right is most of what decides whether a reading is worth the hour.
02
The questions that produce something useful
Tarot does its best work on situations you are inside of and can still influence. Open questions, aimed at your own choices, give a reading something to work with.
These tend to go somewhere.
- What should I be putting my attention on this year?
- What am I holding on to that is costing me something?
- What would help me decide between staying and moving?
- What am I not seeing about this situation?
- If I take this path, what am I likely to be dealing with?
- What does this relationship need from me right now?
03
The questions that waste the session
Closed questions about fixed outcomes, and questions about other people's private business, tend to produce either a flat answer or a reading that says more about your anxiety than your situation.
These generally do not go anywhere useful.
- Will I get married this year? — ask instead what you want from a relationship and what is in the way.
- Is my partner lying to me? — a reading cannot answer this, and you deserve a real answer, not a card.
- Will I get the job? — ask what would strengthen your position, which you can act on.
- When exactly will this happen? — tarot is poor at dates and honest readers will say so.
- Anything medical, legal or financial — see a doctor, a lawyer or a qualified adviser.
04
What a twelve-card year spread actually does
The common year-ahead layout places one card for each month, often with an additional card for the year as a whole. It is a useful shape, provided it is read for what it is.
Each card is a theme — something that is likely to be live for you in that stretch, something worth preparing for or paying attention to. It is not a forecast of events, and it does not mean a particular thing will happen in a particular week. Read as themes, a year spread tends to show patterns: the same card family appearing in clusters, or a shift around the middle of the year.
Reversals are read in this practice, and they often matter most in a year spread, because they tend to mark the months where something is being resisted or delayed rather than absent.
05
How to prepare for the session
Write down the three things actually on your mind before the call, in your own words, without tidying them up. That list is almost always more honest than the question people open with.
Have something to write on. Most of what is useful in a reading is said in passing and forgotten by the evening. And come with a decision you are weighing rather than a general wish for a good year — the reading has something to grip.
06
What this is, and what it is not
A टैरो (tarot) reading is a structured way of looking at a situation you are already turning over. It is not fortune-telling, it does not predict fixed events, and it is not a substitute for medical, legal, financial or psychological advice. If something in your life needs a doctor or a lawyer, that is what it needs.
Readings here are on the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, reversals included, by video call, for adults of eighteen and over, at ₹1,000 per spread. How the session runs is explained on the first call, before you commit to anything.

Questions
Frequently asked
What should I ask in a year-ahead tarot reading?
Open questions about what you can influence — what to focus on, what to let go of, what you are not seeing, or what a particular decision would involve. Closed questions about fixed outcomes produce much less.
Can tarot predict exactly when something will happen?
No. Tarot is poor at dates and an honest reader will tell you so. A year spread gives themes for each month, not a calendar of events.
What is a twelve-card year spread?
One card for each month of the year ahead, often with an extra card for the year as a whole. Each card is read as a theme to work with rather than a prediction of events.
Are reversed cards read in a year-ahead spread?
Yes, in this practice reversals are read. In a year spread they often mark the stretches where something is being resisted or delayed rather than absent altogether.
How much does a tarot reading cost and how does it work?
₹1,000 per spread, by video call, for adults 18 and over, anywhere in India or overseas. The process is explained on the first call before anything is decided.
