A Year-End Tarot Reflection: Looking Back on 2026 Before You Plan 2027
A six-card year-end tarot spread for looking back on 2026: the year's theme, what went well, what was hard, what it taught you, what to release and what to carry forward. Reflection only, no predictions.

What is a year-end tarot spread?
A year-end tarot spread is a layout of cards used to look back over the year that is ending: what happened, what it meant to you and what you have learnt. It is a review, not a forecast, and every position points backwards.
Late December is a natural time for this. Work slows, the calendar is about to change and most people take stock without being asked. A spread gives that stocktaking a shape, in the spirit of स्वाध्याय (svadhyaya, self-study): looking honestly at your own patterns rather than waiting to be told what comes next.
Draw it any time from about mid-December to the first week of January, in a quiet hour rather than in the middle of a party or a family gathering.
02
How many cards does a year-end reflection spread use?
This year-end reflection spread uses six cards, each with its own question about 2026. If six feels like too many, a three-card version works too: what I learnt, what I release and what I carry forward.
01
1. The theme of 2026
If this year had a title, what would it be? What was it really about for me?
02
2. What went well
What am I glad about, including the small things I have not stopped to notice?
03
3. What was hard
Which moment or stretch asked the most of me?
04
4. What it taught me
What do I understand now that I did not understand in January?
05
5. What to release
Which worry, grudge, habit or story about myself belongs to 2026 and can stay there?
06
6. What to carry forward
Which strength, habit or relationship that grew this year is worth keeping?
03
How do you lay out and read the cards?
Lay the cards in two rows of three: cards one to three in the first row show the year as you lived it, and cards four to six in the second row show what you make of it. Read the first row, then the second, then the two together.
Before you shuffle, spend ten minutes with your phone's photos, your calendar or an old journal from 2026, so that the year is fresh in your mind. Write one question at the head of a page, such as 'What do I want to understand about the year I have just lived?', and hold it while you shuffle.
Reversed cards are read in this practice. A reversal usually softens a theme or turns it inward: a lesson still being worked through, or something you sensed during the year but did not say. It is another angle on the same position, never a warning.
04
What questions should I ask in a year-end tarot reflection?
Ask open questions about what has already happened and how you met it, because those are the questions a reflection can actually help with. Questions about what will happen next year belong elsewhere.
01
About surprises
What did 2026 ask of me that I did not expect in January?
02
About growth
Where did I grow without noticing it at the time?
03
About choices
What did I keep saying yes to when I wanted to say no?
04
About people
Who mattered most to me this year, and have I told them?
05
About weight
What am I still carrying from a difficult moment, and why?
05
What could an example reflection look like?
Here is an illustrative reflection for the question 'What was 2026 really about for me?'. It was written for this article and is not a client's reading; it shows how each card becomes a question about the past rather than a statement about the future.
01
Theme: Eight of Wands
A fast-moving card. The prompt: the year moved quickly; what did I rush past that deserved more time?
02
Went well: Six of Cups
Old bonds and familiar comfort. The prompt: which old friendship or family tie came back into my life this year?
03
Was hard: Five of Pentacles
Feeling left out in the cold. The prompt: when did I feel unsupported, and who did turn up for me?
04
Taught me: Temperance
Balance and patience. The prompt: what did I learn about my own pace and limits?
05
Release: Nine of Swords, reversed
Night-time worry beginning to ease. The prompt: which worry from this year never came true, and can I put it down?
06
Carry forward: Page of Pentacles
A small, steady beginning. The prompt: which new skill or habit did I start in 2026 that is worth keeping up?
06
How is a reflection reading different from a year-ahead reading?
A reflection reading looks back at what happened and what you made of it, while a year-ahead reading offers themes to think about for the months to come. One reviews; the other helps you plan.
They work well in that order. Draw the reflection spread in the last fortnight of December, and keep the planning for January with a year-ahead spread. What you release and carry forward in this spread often becomes the starting point for that later reading. If you drew the Diwali spread in November, look back at it now too.
07
How do you journal a year-end tarot reflection?
Write a few lines for each of the six cards on the same day, while the reading is fresh, and add the date and a photo of the spread. A tarot journal is a record of your own thinking, and a year-end entry is one you will want to reread next December.
01
Three moments
Write down three moments from 2026 you want to remember, whatever the cards said.
02
Gratitude
A short list of कृतज्ञता (kritagyata, gratitude): people, places and small things that helped.
03
Read back
If you kept a journal this year, read your January entries. What had changed by December?
04
One sentence
Finish with one sentence that sums up what 2026 taught you, in your own words.
08
What can a year-end tarot reflection not tell you?
A year-end tarot reflection cannot tell you what will happen in 2027, judge whether your year was a success, or explain what other people were thinking. Tarot is reflection, not prediction, and this spread stays with the year you have lived.
It is also not the place for questions about health, legal matters or money decisions; those need a doctor, a lawyer or a qualified adviser. A hard year can bring up grief, loss or exhaustion, and cards are not a substitute for support.
If you are struggling, please reach out to a mental-health professional. In India you can call the free Tele-MANAS helpline on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416), available 24×7.
09
When should you book a tarot reading?
Book a reading when your own reflection keeps circling one part of the year, or when you would like someone to ask the follow-up questions a self-reading rarely reaches. A year-end reflection can be done online just as well as in person; see whether an online reading works the same.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers tarot readings online by video call from VastuKimaya in Andheri East, Mumbai, for adults aged 18 and over, anywhere in India or abroad. She reads the Rider–Waite–Smith deck with reversals, at ₹1,000 per spread, and the spread is agreed with you on the first call.

What questions should I ask in a year-end tarot reflection?
Open questions about what has already happened, such as 'What did this year ask of me?', 'Where did I grow?' and 'What am I still carrying?'. Questions about next year belong to a year-ahead reading.
How many cards does a year-end reflection spread use?
This spread uses six cards, one for each question about the year. A three-card version also works: what I learnt, what I release and what I carry forward.
How is a reflection reading different from a year-ahead reading?
A reflection reading looks back at what happened and what you made of it; a year-ahead reading offers themes for the coming months. Many people do the reflection in December and the year-ahead reading in January.
Can a year-end tarot reflection be done online?
Yes. Dr. Kimaya reads online by video call, with the cards shown on screen, for adults aged 18 and over in India or abroad. You can also draw this spread for yourself at home.
Can a year-end tarot spread predict what 2027 will bring?
No. This spread looks back at 2026 only. Tarot does not predict events or dates; for thinking about the coming year, use a year-ahead spread as a set of themes, not a forecast.
