Small Problem or Big Problem? When DIY Vastu Is Enough

01

Is your Vastu problem small or big?

Most Vastu problems are small: they come from upkeep and arrangement, and you can change them in a day. A few are bigger, because they come from the layout of the home itself or show up as a pattern across the whole family, and those benefit from an expert's eye.

If you have recently read that your toilet is in the wrong place or your door faces an unlucky direction, you may be feeling anxious. Please set that worry down for a moment. No direction is simply bad in Vastu; every zone has strengths and every imbalance has remedies. This guide gives you a calm way to tell what you can handle yourself from what is worth showing to a consultant.

02

Which problems can you fix yourself?

Problems of care, clutter and placement are usually yours to fix, and they are the right place to start even if you later book a consultation. Many of them are covered one by one in everyday home problems and what Vastu says.

  • 01

    Clutter and storage

Piles in the centre of the home, on the stairs, under the bed or in the North-East corner.

  • 02

    Broken or stopped things

Cracked mirrors, stopped clocks, fused bulbs, chipped idols and appliances kept for a repair that never happens.

  • 03

    Water that drips or stands

Leaking taps, slow drains and buckets left standing are quick, practical fixes.

  • 04

    Light and air

Dim entrances, curtains that never open and corners that smell stale.

  • 05

    Movable furniture

Bed direction (head towards the South or East), desk direction (facing North or East), a mirror facing the bed, or a dustbin in the North-East.

  • 06

    The entrance

Shoes piled at the door, a squeaky or sticking door, a missing nameplate or a cluttered lobby.

03

Which problems usually need a Vastu consultant?

Problems built into the layout usually need a consultant, because judging them involves exact compass readings, the whole plan, and remedies matched to that particular home. These are not reasons to panic; they simply need more than a quick tidy-up.

  • 01

Toilets or a kitchen in the North-East or the centre

These are among the more significant placements, and remedies depend on the exact position.

  • 02

    Cut, missing or extended corners

Common in Mumbai flats and corner plots. See L-shaped and irregular flats.

  • 03

    The main entrance position

Entrances are judged by their exact pada, or segment, on the wall, which needs careful measurement.

  • 04

    Something outside you cannot change

A road hitting the home head-on, a tall building or a pole in front. See house facing a T-junction.

  • 05

    Decisions you cannot easily undo

Buying, redevelopment, building or setting up an office for several people.

04

How do you run a simple Vastu self-check?

A simple self-check needs only a phone compass, a sheet of paper and twenty quiet minutes. It helps you see your home the way a consultant first sees it.

  • 01

    Find North

Stand near the centre of the home with a phone compass, away from metal and electronics, and note where North lies.

  • 02

    Sketch the home

Draw the outline and mark the main door, kitchen, toilets, bedrooms and pooja area.

  • 03

    Divide it into zones

Split the sketch into a three-by-three grid. The middle square is the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre); the others are the eight directions. The 16 Vastu zones explains a finer version.

  • 04

    Note what sits where

Is the centre open? Is the North-East light and clean? Is the South-West heavy and stable? Is the kitchen in the South-East?

  • 05

Mark care issues and layout issues separately

Fix the care issues first. Keep the layout issues on a list to discuss with a consultant.

05

How long should you try DIY before calling someone?

Give simple changes a fair, consistent try for a few weeks before deciding whether you need more help. Clearing clutter or fixing a leak once, and letting it return, does not tell you much.

If you have kept the changes up and the home still feels heavy, or the same trouble keeps returning in the same zone, that is the moment to call. Call sooner if you are facing a decision about a property, or if a layout issue on your list is worrying you. Vastu describes tendencies in how a space feels, not fixed timelines, so it is fine to trust your own sense of whether things have settled.

06

Which DIY mistakes make things worse?

The mistakes that make things worse are usually driven by fear: buying many remedies at once, moving heavy furniture at random, or making structural changes on the strength of a video. Each adds stress without addressing the real cause.

  • 01

    Breaking walls or shifting plumbing

Structural changes are rarely needed. Non-structural remedies come first.

  • 02

    Stacking remedies

Several pyramids, mirrors and crystals in one corner can confuse a zone rather than support it.

  • 03

    Following every rule you read

Many popular rules are half-remembered or wrong. See common Vastu myths.

  • 04

    Ignoring the practical fix

Seepage needs a plumber and a sagging beam needs an engineer before any remedy.

07

Which service fits this?

Vastu fits when the problem lives in the space; DIY covers the care, and a consultant covers the layout. The पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements) give a useful check: is anything blocking water, fire, air, earth or space in your home?

If what feels heavy is your own tiredness or mood rather than the room, Reiki may suit you better. If you are stuck on a choice, such as whether to move or stay, a tarot reading can help you think it through. Crystals can support either as a daily reminder. Vastu, Reiki, tarot or crystals: which one do you need? compares them.

Some problems belong elsewhere first: cracks and seepage with an engineer or plumber, health symptoms with a doctor, ongoing low mood with a counsellor, money trouble with a chartered accountant, and disputes with a lawyer. Vastu can support each of these, never replace them.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I know if I need a Vastu consultant?

You likely need a consultant if the issue is part of the layout, such as a toilet or kitchen in the North-East, a cut corner or an awkward entrance, or if a problem keeps returning after simple fixes. Clutter, leaks and broken items you can usually handle yourself.

Can I fix Vastu problems without breaking walls?

Yes. Most Vastu problems can be supported with non-structural remedies such as decluttering, light, colour, pyramids, metal, crystals and salt. Dr. Kimaya's approach does not involve demolition, so the remedies also suit rented homes.

Is a toilet in the North-East a big Vastu problem?

It is considered one of the more significant placements, because the North-East is kept clean and light in Vastu. It is not a reason to panic. Keep it spotless and closed, and ask a consultant for remedies suited to its exact position.

Can I check Vastu with a phone compass?

Yes, a phone compass is enough for a basic self-check if you stand near the centre, away from metal and electronics. For exact readings of entrances and corners, a consultant measures at several points with a proper compass.

How long should I wait to see if DIY Vastu works?

Give simple changes a consistent try for a few weeks. If the home still feels heavy, or the same problem keeps returning in the same zone, it is a good time to speak to a consultant. Vastu does not promise fixed timelines.
