Bedroom Allocation in a Family Home as per Vastu
Who should sleep where? Bedroom allocation Vastu for the head of the family, parents, grandparents, children, grown-up children and guests — and what to do in a two-bedroom Mumbai flat.

01
Why does bedroom allocation matter in Vastu?
Bedroom allocation matters in Vastu because each direction carries a different quality, and matching rooms to the people who use them helps the whole household feel settled. The वास्तु पुरुष मंडल (Vastu Purusha Mandala) links each zone with an element and deity, and those qualities suit some stages of life better than others.
In practice, most families in Mumbai live in two or three bedroom flats, so allocation is always a balance between Vastu, age, privacy, study needs and simple practicality. The guidance below is a starting point, not a set of rigid rules.
02
Which bedroom should the head of the family use?
The head of the family, or the main earning couple, should ideally use the South-West bedroom. The South-West belongs to Nairutya and the Earth element, and is associated with stability, responsibility and a steady hand on family decisions.
Place the bed with its headboard against the South or West wall so you sleep with your head towards the South or East. Keep the room uncluttered, use calm, earthy or soft colours, and avoid a mirror facing the bed. Heavy wardrobes along the South or West walls add to the zone's grounding quality.
03
Where should children sleep as per Vastu?
Children are well suited to a bedroom in the West or North-West, and children who love studying can also do well in the East. The South-West is traditionally avoided for young children, as its authority-linked energy is better suited to parents.
01
West
Associated with Varuna, gains and steady results; a good all-round choice for children.
02
North-West
Associated with Vayu and movement; suits sociable, active children.
03
East
Associated with Indra, Surya and learning; suits academically inclined children.
04
Study direction
Face East or North while studying.
05
Sleeping direction
Head towards the East or South.
04
Where should grandparents or elderly parents sleep?
Grandparents or elderly parents can be given the South-West bedroom if they are the senior-most members guiding the family, or a room in the South or West if the South-West is used by the earning couple. These directions are associated with stability, rest and respect.
Practical comfort matters just as much. Elderly family members often need a room close to a bathroom, with minimal steps, good lighting at night and easy access to the living area. A room in the East or North-East with gentle morning light can also suit elders who spend time in prayer and reflection, as long as it is kept light and uncluttered.
05
Where should grown-up children and guests stay?
Grown-up children preparing to study away, work in another city or move out traditionally suit the North-West bedroom, as do guests. The North-West, zone of वायु (Vayu, the wind deity), is associated with movement and change.
For a guest room, the North-West is a classic choice: visitors feel comfortable, and stays naturally remain pleasant. If the North-West is already a child's room, a guest bed in the West or a sofa-cum-bed in the living room works well.
06
Which zones are not preferred for main bedrooms?
The North-East, the centre and, for couples, the South-East are traditionally not preferred as main bedrooms. Each has a reason, and each has remedies if your flat's layout leaves no choice.
01
North-East
ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East) is associated with Water, clarity and prayer, and is ideally kept light. If a bedroom falls here, use it for light, quiet use, keep furniture low and colours pale.
02
Centre
The ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) should stay open. A room there is uncommon in flats, but when it occurs, keep it light and uncluttered.
03
South-East for couples
The Fire zone of Agni is associated with restlessness; couples using it can choose calm colours and keep electronics away from the bed.
07
How do you allocate bedrooms in a 2BHK flat?
In a 2BHK flat, give the bedroom closest to the South-West to the parents or earning couple, and the other bedroom to children or elders. Use the living room thoughtfully for any additional sleeping needs.
01
Couple with young children
Children can share the parents' South-West room until they are older, or take the second room if it is in the West, North-West or East.
02
Couple with elderly parents
Consider the South-West room for whoever carries the main family responsibility; the second room suits the other couple with suitable adjustments.
03
Joint families
Rotating is rarely practical — focus on balancing each room with bed placement, colour and décor.
04
Sofa-cum-bed
In the living room, place it along the South or West wall so the sleeper's head is towards the South or East.
08
What can you do if the ideal allocation isn't possible?
If the ideal allocation isn't possible, focus on what you can adjust inside each room: bed position, sleeping direction, colours, lighting and clutter. These often matter as much as the room's zone.
Place beds against a solid wall, avoid beams over the bed, keep mirrors away from facing the bed, and keep under-bed storage light. A consultant can suggest additional non-structural remedies such as colour, metal, pyramids or crystals for a room in a less preferred zone. Above all, choose an arrangement that keeps the family comfortable, respectful and at ease.
09
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consider consulting a Vastu expert when your family is growing or changing — a new baby, children becoming teenagers, elderly parents moving in — or when you are choosing a new flat and want to plan bedrooms from the start.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers room-by-room consultations for flats and bungalows, with on-site compass measurement across Mumbai from the Andheri East office, or a distant consultation using your floor plan. Remedies are non-structural and suit both owned and rented homes.
