Best Direction to Sleep as per Vastu

01

Which direction should your head face while sleeping as per Vastu?

Vastu recommends sleeping with your head towards the South. This direction is associated with stability and grounding, and is traditionally believed to support deep, restful sleep, good health and longevity. If the South is not possible, the East is the next good choice, particularly for students.

Remember that “head towards the South” means your head rests at the South end of the bed and your feet point North. The headboard should therefore stand against the South wall.

To check your own bed, stand in the middle of the bedroom with a compass held flat, away from metal cupboards and electrical points, and note which wall faces South. If a phone compass gives a reading that changes as you move, take it at two or three points and use the average. Once you know the directions, the tips below are simple to apply, even in a small room.

02

What does each sleeping direction mean in Vastu?

  • Head towards South — best

Traditionally linked with deep sleep, health and longevity. Ideal for the head of the household and for anyone who struggles to switch off at night.

  • Head towards East — good

Associated with the rising sun, learning and growth. Recommended for students and people in study-intensive or creative work.

  • Head towards West — acceptable

Acceptable for adults, though it is said to bring vivid dreams. For young children, the West is best avoided.

  • Head towards North — avoid

Traditionally avoided in both Vastu and Ayurveda. It is believed to disturb the body's alignment with the Earth's magnetic field and affect the quality of sleep.

03

Why is sleeping with your head towards the North avoided?

Sleeping with the head towards the North is avoided because Vastu and Ayurveda hold that it works against the body's natural alignment with the Earth's magnetic field. Traditionally, this is believed to lead to restless sleep and, over time, a feeling of heaviness or fatigue.

These are traditional beliefs rather than medical findings. If you have ongoing sleep problems, headaches or health concerns, please see a doctor — Vastu adjustments can complement, but not replace, medical care.

04

Where should the bed be placed in the bedroom?

The bed should stand with its headboard against the South or West wall, ideally in the South-West part of the room. The master bedroom itself is best located in the South-West of the home.

  • Keep a solid wall behind the headboard rather than a window.
  • Avoid placing the bed directly under a beam.
  • The bedroom door should not directly face the bed.
  • Mirrors should not reflect the sleeping person — cover them at night if needed.
  • Keep the area under the bed clean rather than stuffed with old items.
  • Keep televisions and laptops out of the bedroom where possible.

05

Which direction should couples, students and children sleep in?

  • Couples

Head towards the South in the South-West bedroom is traditionally recommended for stability and harmony. Use a single mattress rather than two separate ones pushed together where possible, and choose soft, warm colours such as peach or cream.

  • Students

Head towards the East is recommended for focus and learning. While studying, they should face East or North.

  • Young children

Head towards the South or East. The West is best avoided for young children, and the children's room suits the West or North-West of the home.

  • Elderly family members

Head towards the South in a calm, grounded room, preferably in the South-West or South of the home.

06

What if your bedroom layout does not allow the right direction?

If the room only allows your head towards the North, first check whether the bed can be turned — even a diagonal placement or moving a side table can sometimes free up a South or East wall. In small Mumbai bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, this is not always possible.

In that case, consider sleeping with your head towards the West as an acceptable alternative, keep the room calm and clutter-free, and use soothing colours. A consultant can suggest non-structural remedies such as crystals like Amethyst near the head of the bed or colour adjustments. See our Bedroom Vastu guide for more layout ideas.

07

Which Vastu habits support better sleep?

  • Use soft, earthy wall colours — cream, soft green, light blue or peach — and avoid bright red or orange.
  • Keep the South-West corner of the bedroom heavier with a wardrobe or chest of drawers.
  • Air the room each morning and let in natural light.
  • Keep phones away from the head of the bed.
  • Avoid storing broken items, old papers or clutter in the bedroom.

When to consult an expert

Consult a Vastu expert if you cannot find a workable bed position, if your bedroom sits in the North-East, or if restless sleep persists after you have ruled out medical causes with a doctor. Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya, Andheri East, Mumbai, assesses bedrooms on-site across Mumbai or through distant consultations using floor plans and photos, and recommends non-structural remedies that suit rented homes.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is sleeping with the head towards the West bad as per Vastu?

No. The West is considered acceptable for adults, though it is said to bring vivid dreams. It is best avoided for young children.

Which direction should students sleep in?

Students are advised to sleep with their head towards the East, which is associated with learning and growth, and to face East or North while studying.

Can I sleep with my feet towards the South?

Feet towards the South means the head is towards the North, which Vastu advises against. Turn the bed so the head is towards the South or East where possible.

What is the best bedroom location as per Vastu?

The master bedroom is best in the South-West of the home, which is associated with stability and grounding.

Can Vastu help if I cannot sleep well?
