Moving On After Divorce: Refreshing Your Home's Energy

01

Why does a home feel heavy after a divorce?

A home often feels heavy after a divorce because every room carries reminders of a shared life — the bed you chose together, the photographs on the wall, the corner where arguments happened. Vastu Shastra describes a home as a living space filled with प्राण (prana, life energy), and it holds that strong emotions leave an impression on that energy.

Whether or not you think in terms of energy, the experience is real: walking into a space full of old associations can keep the mind circling the past. Refreshing your home does not erase what happened. It simply gives you a space that supports the person you are becoming.

Please be gentle with yourself. Divorce is a significant loss, even when it is the right decision, and healing takes its own time.

02

What is the first step to clear old energy from the home?

The first step is a calm, unhurried sort-through of belongings connected to the marriage. You do not have to throw everything away in one weekend. Decide, item by item, what to keep, what to return, what to store out of sight and what to donate.

  • 01

    Return what is not yours

Pack your former partner's belongings neatly and arrange their return, or store them in a closed box outside your main living areas.

  • 02

    Store, don't display

Wedding albums and gifts can be kept for children or for later reflection, but in a closed cupboard rather than on open shelves.

  • 03

    Release broken or unused items

Vastu associates broken clocks, cracked mirrors and unused gadgets with stuck energy. Repair or let them go.

  • 04

    Clear under the bed

Storage under the bed should be kept light and tidy, especially in the bedroom where you rest and recover.

03

How can you cleanse the home's energy after a separation?

You can cleanse the home with simple, traditional practices that need no structural change. These work well in Mumbai flats and rented homes alike.

  • 01

    Salt water mopping

Add a handful of sea salt (crystal salt) to a bucket of water and mop the floors, starting from the North-East and moving towards the South-West. Salt is traditionally used to absorb heaviness.

  • 02

    Open windows in the morning

Let fresh air and early sunlight move through the rooms, especially from the North and East.

  • 03

    Sound

Ring a small bell or play soft mantra chanting as you walk through each room. Sound is used in Vastu to break up stagnant energy.

  • 04

    Light a diya

A diya or lamp in the prayer area at dusk, used safely, is a quiet ritual of renewal.

  • 05

    A peace mantra

You may softly recite ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः (Om Shanti Shanti Shanti), a prayer for peace in body, mind and surroundings.

04

Should you change the bedroom after a divorce?

Yes — rearranging the bedroom is one of the most helpful changes, because it is the room most tied to the relationship. If you can, move the bed to a new wall, with the headboard against the South or West wall so you sleep with your head towards the South or East.

Replace or wash all bedding, and choose new covers in colours you personally love. Remove mirrors that face the bed, or cover them at night. If the bed was bought together and replacing it is not practical, a new mattress protector, fresh linen and a new position already make a noticeable difference to how the room feels.

If you have moved into the master bedroom in the South-West, or out of it, that is fine. The South-West is associated with stability and the Earth element, so a calm, uncluttered South-West zone can help the home feel more grounded as you rebuild.

05

Which Vastu zones support a fresh start?

The North-East, East and South-West zones are especially supportive during a fresh start. Each has a gentle role to play.

  • 01

    North-East — clarity

ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East) is linked with the Water element and clarity of mind. Keep it clean, light and free of heavy furniture; a small prayer corner or a bowl of fresh water with flowers suits it well.

  • 02

    East — new beginnings

The East, ruled by Indra and Surya, is associated with the rising sun. Open the East windows each morning and consider a plant or a meditation mat here.

  • 03

    South-West — stability

Earth tones, a heavy piece of furniture and a family photograph of you with your children or loved ones can anchor this zone.

  • 04

    The centre — breathing room

ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) should stay open and light so the home can breathe.

06

How can Reiki and crystals help you and your home?

Reiki and crystals can offer a sense of calm and a feeling of renewal, for you and for your space. Personal Reiki is a restful, non-invasive practice many people use to unwind during emotionally demanding phases. Reiki Vastu extends this to the home, cleansing rooms that feel dense and activating remedies such as crystals and pyramids.

Rose Quartz is often chosen for self-compassion, and Amethyst for a calmer mind. Clear Quartz can be placed in the North-East for clarity. Crystals should be cleansed and placed with thought rather than scattered around the home.

Vastu, Reiki and crystals complement and do not replace counselling, therapy or medical care. If you are struggling, please reach out to a mental-health professional. In India you can call the free Tele-MANAS helpline on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416), available 24×7.

07

How do you make the home feel like yours again?

You make the home feel like yours by adding small, personal choices that reflect who you are now. This is often the most healing step of all.

Rearrange the living room seating, repaint a wall in a colour you have always wanted, hang artwork that inspires you, or create a reading nook in the West or South-West. Bring in fresh flowers or a healthy plant. If children live with you, involve them in choosing something new for their own rooms so the change feels shared and hopeful rather than sad.

08

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consider consulting a Vastu expert if the home still feels heavy after your own efforts, if sleep or peace of mind keep feeling disturbed in a particular room, or if you are choosing a new flat for a fresh start.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar can review your floor plan and suggest non-structural remedies, alongside Reiki Vastu or space cleansing where helpful. Consultations are available on-site across Mumbai from the Andheri East office, or as a distant consultation using your floor plan and photographs. Everything is handled privately and with care.

Questions

Frequently asked

Should I keep my wedding photos after a divorce as per Vastu?

You can keep them, but store them in a closed box or cupboard rather than displaying them. Vastu favours surrounding yourself with images that reflect the present and the future you want, especially in the bedroom and living room.

Is it better to move house after a divorce?

Not necessarily; many people refresh their current home successfully. Moving can help if the home holds very painful memories, but cleansing, rearranging and personalising the space are practical first steps, especially when children need stability.

How often should I do salt water mopping after a separation?

Once a week for the first few weeks is a gentle rhythm, then once or twice a month. Use sea salt, mop from the North-East towards the South-West, and open windows afterwards.

Can Reiki help with the emotional pain of divorce?

Reiki can support relaxation and a calmer state of mind, which many people find comforting during a separation. It complements counselling and medical care and is not a replacement for them.

Which colours help a home feel fresh after divorce?

Soft, light colours such as cream, pale yellow, light green or sky blue help a home feel open and fresh. Earthy tones suit the South-West for a grounded feeling, and choosing colours you personally love matters most.
