01
Can a home feel heavy after a traumatic event?
Yes, many people say their home feels heavy, tense or unfamiliar after a traumatic event such as a sudden loss, a break-in, a serious illness, an accident, a period of conflict or abuse. Rooms can hold strong memories, and our surroundings can quietly remind us of what happened.
This article offers gentle ways to care for your space. It is not a substitute for professional help. Your own safety and wellbeing come first, and healing from trauma often needs the support of doctors, counsellors, trusted people and time.
If you are struggling, please reach out to a mental-health professional. In India you can call the free Tele-MANAS helpline on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416), available 24×7. If you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services.
02
What should come first when healing a home after trauma?
Safety and support come first, before any change to the space. Make sure the home is physically safe, that locks and lights work, and that you are not alone with difficult feelings.
Speak to someone you trust and consider seeing a counsellor or doctor. Vastu, Reiki and crystals complement and do not replace medical or psychological care. There is no deadline for feeling better, and there is no right order to do things in; move at the pace that feels manageable for you and your family.
03
How can light and fresh air help a heavy space?
Light and fresh air are the simplest first step, because they change the feel of a room immediately and need no special effort. In Vastu, the flow of प्राण (prana, life energy) depends on air, light and open space.
Open the windows for a while each morning, particularly on the North and East sides where the morning light enters. Draw back heavy curtains. Replace fused bulbs, and add a soft lamp to corners that feel dark in the evening. Even a few minutes of sunlight in a room that has been kept closed can make it feel lighter.
04
How do you clean and sort belongings after a difficult time?
Clean slowly and in small sections, and decide about belongings only when you feel ready. You do not have to clear everything at once, and there is no need to discard things that are precious to you.
Start with one small area
A bedside table, a shelf or the entrance is enough for one day.
Ask for help
A friend or relative can sit with you or handle the heavier tasks.
Use a keep, store and decide-later approach
Place items you are unsure about in a box to revisit another day.
Repair what is broken
Fixing a damaged door, a broken lock or cracked glass restores a sense of safety.
Wash fabrics
Fresh bedsheets, curtains and cushion covers can make a room feel renewed.
05
How can you create a calm corner at home?
A calm corner is a small, comfortable place set aside for rest, prayer or quiet breathing, and it can give you somewhere to return to on hard days. The North-East, the ईशान्य (Ishanya) zone, is traditionally suited to this, but any quiet spot that feels right is fine.
Keep it simple: a comfortable seat or cushion, soft light, a plant, a photograph or object that brings comfort, and perhaps a small diya or candle used safely. Some people like to sit here and repeat ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः (Om Shanti Shanti Shanti, a prayer for peace in body, mind and surroundings). Others prefer silence or gentle music.
06
Which gentle space-cleansing practices can help?
Gentle, traditional space-cleansing practices can help a home feel lighter and mark a new beginning. Choose only what feels comfortable and meaningful to you.
Salt
A small bowl of sea salt in a corner that feels heavy, changed every week or two, is a traditional cleansing practice.
Sound
The gentle ringing of a bell or singing bowl as you walk through each room can shift a still, tense atmosphere.
Light and fragrance
A diya, a camphor tablet or a mild natural fragrance in the evening, always used safely.
Colour
Soft, restful colours in bedsheets and cushions, such as light green, pale blue or cream.
Reiki space cleansing
Some families choose Reiki for the home and for themselves, as a supportive practice.
07
How can families and children be included gently?
Include family members, especially children, gently and without pressure, by letting them choose small ways to make their own spaces feel safe. A child might want a night light, a favourite blanket, or to rearrange their bed.
Keep routines as steady as possible, since regular meal times and bedtimes bring reassurance. Watch for changes in sleep, appetite or behaviour that continue over time, and seek guidance from a paediatrician or child counsellor where needed.
08
When to consult a Vastu expert or book a Reiki session
Consider a consultation when you feel ready to make the home feel like yours again, for example before returning to a house after a difficult period, or when a space continues to feel heavy after cleaning. There is no need to rush this.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya offers negative-energy removal, Reiki healing and gentle non-structural Vastu remedies. She works on-site across Mumbai from her Andheri East office and also through distant consultations, and always as a complement to the medical or counselling support you are receiving.
Questions
Frequently asked
How do you cleanse a house after a death in the family?
Cleanse gently and in your own time: open windows, clean slowly, wash fabrics, light a diya and follow the rituals your family finds meaningful. Grief also needs support, so reach out to people you trust or a counsellor.
Should I move out of a home after trauma?
That is a personal decision, ideally made when you feel steadier and with advice from people you trust. Many people find that caring for the space gradually helps it feel safe again.
Can Reiki help after a traumatic experience?
Reiki is a gentle, relaxing practice some people find supportive. It complements, and does not replace, counselling, therapy or medical treatment for trauma.
What colours feel calming after a difficult time?
Soft, light colours such as cream, pale blue and light green are generally experienced as calming. Introduce them through fabrics before repainting.
Where can I get mental-health support in India?
You can call the free Tele-MANAS helpline on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416, available 24×7, or speak to a doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist near you.
