Hotel Vastu: Rooms, Lobby and Kitchen

Vastu matters for hotels because hospitality is built on how guests feel from the moment they arrive until they check out. Hotels are meant to be happy, lively places, and Vastu aims to make that energy felt in every part of the building so that goodwill and guest loyalty remain steady.

A hotel also brings together very different functions under one roof: fire-heavy kitchens, restful rooms, busy public spaces, cash handling and staff areas. Vastu offers a framework for placing each function in a zone whose qualities suit it.

Before choosing a hotel site, check the shape of the plot, the approach roads and the surroundings. Problems at the site level are far harder to balance later than room-level issues.

The main entrance should be checked by compass pada and is usually most comfortable on the North, East or North-East, with the reception desk in the North-East of the lobby. The lobby should be spacious, bright and clean.

A cluttered or dim lobby sends the wrong first message. Keep the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) of the lobby open — a light, open centre, perhaps with a skylight or chandelier, feels generous and welcoming. Seating can be arranged in the South and West parts of the lobby so guests face North or East while waiting. If your entrance is on the South or West, which is common on city plots, a consultant can suggest remedies such as metal strips, pyramids or colour at the threshold.

The hotel kitchen, along with all heating equipment, is ideally placed in the South-East, the zone of Agni. If that is not possible, the kitchen can be in the North-West.

Guest rooms should be planned so their doors open towards the East or North where possible, with beds placed so guests sleep with their heads towards the South or East. Restful sleep is the heart of a guest's experience.

The cash counter or accounts area can be kept in the West or South-West, with the cash box or locker opening towards the North or East. The North is the direction of Kubera, associated with wealth.

The owner's or general manager's office suits the South-West of the building, with the desk arranged so they face North or East. This supports steady decision-making and authority. Keep the accounts area organised, well lit and free of broken equipment.

Water features, fountains and swimming pools are usually placed in the North, North-East or East, the zones linked with the water element. A fountain in the North-East of the forecourt or lobby creates a calm welcome.

Restaurants and dining halls work well in the West or South of the building, with pleasant colour themes and good lighting — dark, dim interiors are better avoided for dining spaces. Banquet halls can be in the North-West, which is associated with movement and social activity. Staircases and lifts are generally preferred in the South, West or South-West, away from the centre.

Yes, Vastu can be applied to an existing hotel without major renovation. Many adjustments involve changing how spaces are used, moving furniture, adjusting colours and lighting, and using non-structural remedies.
