Guest Room Vastu: Where Visitors Should Stay

01

Which direction is right for a guest room as per Vastu?

The North-West is the traditional direction for a guest room as per Vastu. This zone is ruled by Vayu, the deity of wind, and is linked with the air element and with movement. A space charged with movement suits visitors who come, stay comfortably and then move on.

In Hindu tradition a guest is honoured with the words अतिथि देवो भव (Atithi Devo Bhava, the guest is like God). Guest room Vastu is simply a way of expressing that welcome through the space: a room that feels fresh, restful and cared for, without disturbing the balance of the family's own rooms.

If the North-West is not available, the West or the North are workable alternatives. What matters most is that the room is clean, well ventilated and not built over the zones that belong to the heads of the family.

02

Why is the North-West considered a good zone for visitors?

The North-West is considered good for visitors because the air element encourages movement, communication and change. Vastu traditionally places guest rooms, daughters of marriageable age and stores of finished goods in this zone for the same reason: things here do not stagnate.

  • 01

    Easy connection

The air element is associated with conversation and social warmth, which helps guests feel at ease.

  • 02

    Healthy boundaries

Guests feel welcome but the home's stability, held in the South-West, remains with the family.

  • 03

    Fresh atmosphere

North-West rooms usually get good cross-ventilation, which keeps an occasional-use room from feeling stale.

03

Which rooms should not be used as a guest room?

Avoid using the South-West master bedroom zone as a regular guest room. The South-West, ruled by Nairutya and linked with the earth element, is meant for the head of the family and supports stability and authority. When guests occupy it for long periods, many families say decision-making at home starts to feel unsettled.

The North-East should also not be a guest bedroom. This is ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East), the zone of water and spiritual energy, ideally kept light, open or used for the pooja area. The centre of the home, the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan), should stay open rather than being turned into a sleeping space.

04

Where should the bed be placed in a guest room?

Place the guest bed along the South or West wall so that the sleeper's head points towards the South or East. This follows the same sleeping rule used for every bedroom in the home and supports restful sleep.

  • 01

    Head direction

Head towards South or East; avoid the head towards North.

  • 02

    Solid support

A solid wall behind the headboard feels more restful than a window.

  • 03

    Clear sides

Leave space on at least one side of the bed so guests can move easily.

  • 04

    No beams overhead

If a beam runs above the bed, shift the bed or soften it with a false-ceiling panel or light fabric.

  • 05

    Mirror check

Avoid a mirror that directly reflects the bed; cover it at night if it cannot be moved.

05

What colours and decor suit a guest room?

Light, soothing colours such as off-white, cream, pale grey or soft pastels suit a guest room. In the North-West, white and light grey echo the air element and keep the room feeling airy.

Keep decor simple and welcoming. A small bedside lamp, fresh towels, a jug of water, a plant with healthy green leaves and a calm landscape painting make visitors feel looked after. Avoid pictures of war, loneliness or storms, and remove broken or chipped items.

06

How do you manage guest room Vastu in a compact Mumbai flat?

In most Mumbai 1BHK and 2BHK flats there is no dedicated guest room, so the aim is to create a comfortable guest corner rather than a perfect room. A sofa-cum-bed in the living room, a study that doubles as a guest room, or a folding mattress kept in storage all work well.

  • 01

Use the North-West of the living room

If guests sleep in the hall, set up the sofa-cum-bed in its North-West portion where possible.

  • 02

    Keep storage tidy

Store extra bedding in a closed cupboard along the South or West wall rather than under the bed in a heap.

  • 03

    Refresh after visits

Air the room, change the linen and wipe surfaces once guests leave so the space resets.

  • 04

    Add a salt bowl

A small bowl of sea salt, changed weekly, is a simple way to keep an occasional-use room feeling fresh.

07

What non-structural remedies help a guest room?

Non-structural remedies can balance a guest room that is in a less suitable zone without any demolition. VastuKimaya's approach uses portable tools that also suit rented homes.

Colour therapy, a light brass or metal element in a West-zone room, activated pyramids and crystals, and gentle sound such as a bell or singing bowl before guests arrive are all options. Which remedy fits depends on the exact zone measured by compass, so avoid adding many objects at random.

08

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consult a Vastu expert if you are planning a new home or renovation and want to decide room usage correctly, or if your guest room sits in the South-West or North-East and you cannot change it. It is also worth a check if you host elderly parents for long stays and want the room to support their comfort.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar consults from VastuKimaya's office in Andheri East and visits homes across Mumbai, from Juhu and Bandra to Powai and Thane. Distant consultations using your floor plan and photographs are also available, followed by a written report with practical, non-structural remedies.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can a guest room be in the South-West?

A guest room in the South-West is not ideal because this zone belongs to the head of the family. If you have no choice, use it only for short stays and balance it with remedies suggested after a compass check.

Which direction should guests sleep in?

Guests should sleep with their head towards the South or East, the same rule followed for all bedrooms. Avoid sleeping with the head towards the North.

Can parents who live with us use the North-West room?

Elderly parents who live permanently with you are family, not guests, so the South-West or South is usually more suitable for them. The North-West suits visitors and shorter stays.

Is a sofa-cum-bed in the living room fine as per Vastu?

Yes, a sofa-cum-bed in the living room is fine in a compact flat. Place it along the South or West wall where possible so guests sleep with the head towards South or East.

Can the guest room also be a study?

Yes, a guest room can double as a study. Place the desk so the person faces East or North, and keep the bed and desk areas tidy and clearly separated.
