Vastu for 1BHK and 2BHK Flats in Mumbai
Compact Mumbai flats rarely follow textbook Vastu. Here is how to apply Vastu to a 1BHK or 2BHK — zone by zone, room by room — using simple, non-structural changes that also suit rented homes.

Can Vastu work in a small 1BHK or 2BHK flat?
Yes — Vastu works in small flats because it is applied zone by zone, not only through the overall layout. Mumbai's compact 1BHK and 2BHK homes often have open kitchens, toilets in awkward corners and bedrooms wherever the builder could fit them. You may not be able to move rooms, but you can decide how each zone is used, what is placed where and which non-structural remedies to add.
Every room also has its own eight directions. So even if the bedroom is not in the South-West of the flat, you can still place the bed in the South-West of that bedroom.

How do you find the directions of your flat?
Find the centre of the flat on a floor plan and take compass readings from there, away from metal grills, the fridge and electrical boards. Draw lines to divide the plan into eight zones plus the centre. Mark where the main door, kitchen stove, sink, toilets, beds and pooja corner fall.
Building brochures and map apps often show approximate orientation only, so an on-site compass reading is more reliable. This simple map will guide every tip below.

What are the most important Vastu zones in a small flat?
North-East — keep it light
The most sensitive zone. Keep it clean, open and uncluttered. A small pooja shelf or a window seat for reading suits it; heavy cupboards, dustbins and shoe racks do not.
South-West — keep it heavy
Best for the master bed, wardrobes and heavy storage. It brings stability to the head of the household.
South-East — the fire zone
The ideal kitchen zone. Where the kitchen is elsewhere, keep the stove as close to the South-East of the kitchen as possible.
Centre — keep it open
In small flats the centre is often the living-dining space. Avoid heavy furniture, clutter or storage right in the middle.
North — keep it active
Associated with opportunities and wealth. Keep it clutter-free; this is a good place for a desk or display.

How should you arrange the living room and kitchen in a 1BHK?
In a 1BHK, the living room usually doubles as dining, guest and sometimes study space, so keep its North and East sides lighter and place heavy sofas along the South or West walls. Keep the centre of the room open and position the TV on the South-East wall where possible.
In the kitchen, cook facing East if the counter allows. Keep the stove and sink apart, since fire and water are opposing elements; if they must sit side by side, a small gap or a wooden or granite divider helps. With open kitchens, keep the cooking area tidy and well lit so fire energy does not spill into the living area as clutter.

Where should the bedrooms be in a 2BHK flat?
In a 2BHK, the bedroom closer to the South-West should ideally be the master bedroom, and the one nearer the West or North-West suits children or guests. If the layout does the opposite, use the room you have and apply the principles inside it.
- Place the headboard against the South or West wall; sleep with the head towards the South, or the East for students.
- Avoid sleeping with the head towards the North.
- Do not place the bed directly under a beam; a false ceiling or a fabric canopy can soften it.
- Mirrored wardrobe shutters facing the bed are common in Mumbai flats — cover them at night.
- Keep the space under a storage bed tidy rather than packed with old items.

What if the toilet is in the North-East of your flat?
A toilet in the North-East is one of the most common defects in modern flats, and it is usually balanced with non-structural remedies rather than demolition. Keep the toilet door closed and the seat lid down, keep it spotlessly clean and dry, ensure good ventilation and avoid dark colours.
A consultant may add remedies such as a bowl of sea salt changed regularly, suitable pyramids or metal strips, or colour adjustments. Avoid placing the pooja shelf on a wall shared with the toilet.

What quick Vastu fixes suit rented or fixed-layout flats?
Declutter the entrance
Keep shoe racks to the side, not right at the door, and keep the corridor outside the flat clean.
Light the main door
A bright entrance and a clean name plate welcome energy, especially in dim society corridors.
Use colour by zone
Light, soft colours in the North and East; earthy tones in the South-West. Cushions, curtains and rugs work when you cannot repaint.
Add portable remedies
Crystals, pyramids and salt bowls can be moved with you when you shift.
Let in morning light
Open East and North windows in the morning and keep enclosed balconies free of junk.

Which direction is good for a 1BHK flat as per Vastu?
Flats facing North, East or North-East are generally preferred. More important than the facing direction, however, is where the main door, kitchen, toilet and bedroom fall, so check the full floor plan.
Where should the pooja corner be in a small flat?
Place a small pooja shelf in the North-East of the flat or of the living room, at a comfortable height, and not on a wall shared with a toilet or inside the bedroom where possible.
Is an open kitchen okay as per Vastu?
Yes, if it is kept clean and organised. Try to place the stove in the South-East part of the kitchen so the cook faces East, and keep the stove and sink apart.
Can Vastu remedies be taken along when I shift flats?
Most non-structural remedies such as crystals, pyramids and salt bowls are portable. They should be re-assessed for the new flat, because directions and defects will be different.
My 2BHK has no South-West bedroom. What should I do?
Use the bedroom you have and place the bed in the South-West part of that room with the head towards the South or East. Keep heavier furniture in the South-West of the flat for stability.
