01
Are crystals a good Diwali gift?
A crystal can be a thoughtful Diwali gift when it is chosen for the person and comes with a short note on where to keep it. It fits the festival's gifting conventions well: something lasting, something for the home, and something that carries a wish for the year ahead.
It helps to be clear about what you are giving. A crystal carries traditional associations, a शुभकामना (shubhkamna, good wishes) in a form people can keep on a shelf. It is not a remedy for anyone's health, finances or marriage, and it should never be given with that suggestion.
One well-chosen stone is a better gift than a boxed set of seven. The general customs, including what many families avoid giving at Diwali, are covered in Diwali gifts: what is traditionally given.
02
Which crystal suits a business owner: Pyrite or Citrine?
Pyrite suits a business owner who wants something for the cash counter, safe or desk, and Citrine suits someone who would keep it on a desk or in the North of an office or home. Both are associated with prosperity and work, and both belong in places of activity, not the bedroom.
Pyrite, with its brassy metallic shine, is the more striking gift and sits well beside the cash drawer or on the owner's desk. It must be kept dry, because water and salt can make it rust or crumble, and its pieces can be small and sharp-edged.
Citrine, the Merchant's Stone, is traditionally kept in the North, the direction of कुबेर (Kubera, the guardian of wealth), or on a work desk; the South-East is also used. Much of what is sold as citrine is heat-treated amethyst, which is fine to give but should not cost natural-citrine prices.
At Diwali, when shops and offices are being cleaned for Chopda Pujan and the new account books, a small pyrite cluster or citrine point for the counter is a gift that is likely to be used.
03
Which crystal suits newly-weds?
A pair of Rose Quartz stones suits newly-weds, kept together on the bedside table or in the South-West of the bedroom. Rose Quartz is the stone of love in crystal therapy, and giving a pair rather than a single piece mirrors the partnership.
नैऋत्य (Nairutya, the South-West) is the zone of the Earth element, linked with stability and long-term relationships, which is why it is the usual zone for this stone. Two small hearts or two tumbled stones in a small dish are enough; a large sphere is not needed.
Rose Quartz is gentle and suits almost any home, which makes it a safe choice for a couple whose new flat you have not yet seen. Write on the card that it is a wish for a warm home, not a fix for anything.
04
Which crystal suits a student or a stressed friend?
Amethyst suits a student or a friend going through a stressful phase, kept on a study desk, a bedside table or in the North-East of the home. It is known as the stone of calm and is traditionally used for a quieter mind and steadier focus.
For a student, a small tumbled amethyst or a little cluster on a desk that faces East or North is a kind gift in an exam year. More ideas for the desk are in crystals for students.
For a friend who is having a hard time, give the stone as a gesture of care, not as a solution. The more useful gift is often time: a phone call, a walk, an evening together. Amethyst can be a calming presence on a bedside table, but it is not a treatment for stress, anxiety or sleep problems.
If you are struggling, please reach out to a mental-health professional. In India you can call the free Tele-MANAS helpline on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416), available 24×7.
05
Which crystal can you give to anyone?
Clear Quartz can be given to anyone, because it suits any room and is traditionally kept in the North-East, the East or on a desk. In Hindi it is often called स्फटिक (sphatik, clear crystal), and it is used to bring clarity and to support other remedies placed near it.
It is the safe choice when you do not know the household's taste or beliefs, and a small point or sphere looks good on almost any shelf.
One stone to hold back at Diwali is Black Tourmaline. It is a useful protective stone for an entrance, but black items are quietly avoided as Diwali gifts in many families, so it is better given at another time of year.
06
What should the placement card say?
The placement card should say the crystal's name, where to keep it, how to look after it and a line of good wishes, in four or five short lines. A card turns a pretty stone into something the person can actually use.
Here are sample cards you can copy into a gift tag. Suggest the person checks the direction with a compass app at the centre of their home, away from steel cupboards and appliances.
01
Pyrite
Keep it on your desk or beside the cash counter, or in the North of the shop or office. Keep it dry; dust with a soft cloth. Wishing you a steady and honest year of business.
02
Citrine
Keep it in the North of your home or office, or on your work desk, and not in the bedroom. Cleanse with the sound of a bell; keep it out of strong sun.
03
Rose Quartz pair
Keep the pair together on the bedside table or in the South-West of the bedroom. Cleanse with a bell or a little gentle morning light. Wishing you a warm first Diwali together.
04
Amethyst
Keep it on your study desk, beside the bed or in the North-East. Keep it out of strong sun, which can fade it. Wishing you a calm and steady year.
05
Clear Quartz
Keep it in the North-East or East of your home, or on your desk. Cleanse with the sound of a bell. Wishing you a clear and bright year ahead.
06
For every card
Add: 'Keep small stones away from young children and pets. A crystal is a symbol of good wishes, not a treatment.'
07
How can you tell if a gift crystal is genuine?
Check the colour, the temperature and the inside of the stone before you buy: very bright and perfectly even colour suggests dye, round air bubbles suggest glass, and real quartz feels cool and heavy for its size while glass warms quickly in the hand.
Festival stalls and online sales are busy places for mislabelled stones. Ask the seller what the mineral is and whether it has been treated, and be sceptical of a price far below others for the same size. The full set of checks is in how to spot a fake crystal before you pay.
08
Should you cleanse a crystal before gifting it?
Yes, give the crystal a gentle cleanse before you wrap it, because in crystal therapy a stone is believed to hold the energy of every shop and hand it has passed through. The sound of a bell or a singing bowl for a minute is safe for every stone on this list.
Keep Pyrite away from water and salt, and keep Rose Quartz, Amethyst and Citrine out of long, strong sunlight, which can fade them. Then hold the stone for a moment and think of the person you are giving it to. The methods for each stone are explained in how to cleanse and charge crystals.
Wrap it in a soft cloth pouch rather than loose tissue, so points and edges are not chipped on the way. Remind the person they can cleanse it again once it is in its place.
09
When to consult a crystal therapy or Vastu expert
Consult an expert when a crystal is meant to work with a particular home, shop or office rather than as a simple gift, because in Vastu the zone decides the stone. A reading of the space shows where the North or North-East actually falls.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers crystal therapy with Vastu from VastuKimaya in Andheri East, on-site across Mumbai, and through distant consultations using floor plans and photographs. She selects crystals for each zone, cleanses and activates them with Reiki and Vedic mantras, and marks where they go.
Questions
Frequently asked
Which crystal is a good Diwali gift?
Match the crystal to the person: Pyrite or Citrine for a business owner, a pair of Rose Quartz for a couple, Amethyst for a student or a stressed friend, and Clear Quartz for anyone. Add a card saying where to keep it.
Is it okay to gift crystals?
Yes. Crystals are commonly given as gifts. Choose one with the person in mind, cleanse it gently before wrapping, and present it as a symbol of good wishes rather than a remedy or a treatment for anything.
Which crystal is good for a business owner?
Pyrite or Citrine. Pyrite suits the cash counter, safe or desk and must be kept dry. Citrine suits the North of an office or a work desk. Neither is usually kept in the bedroom.
Which crystal is good for a newly married couple?
A pair of Rose Quartz, kept together on the bedside table or in the South-West of the bedroom. The pair symbolises partnership, and Rose Quartz is gentle enough for any home.
Should a crystal be cleansed before gifting?
Yes, a gentle cleanse is a good idea. The sound of a bell or singing bowl is safe for every stone. Keep Pyrite dry, and keep Rose Quartz, Amethyst and Citrine out of strong sunlight.
Is Black Tourmaline a good Diwali gift?
It is a useful protective stone, but many families quietly avoid black items as Diwali gifts. It is better given at another time of year, or chosen by the person for their own entrance.
