How to Cleanse and Charge Crystals
A clear guide to cleansing and charging crystals safely: sunlight, moonlight, salt, sound, smoke and Reiki, which crystals need care, and how often to do it.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
Why do crystals need cleansing?
Crystals need cleansing because, in crystal therapy, they are believed to absorb the energies of the people and spaces around them. A crystal placed at a busy entrance or used during a stressful time is thought to hold some of that heaviness over time.
Cleansing clears these absorbed energies so the crystal can return to its natural vibration. At VastuKimaya, Dr. Kimaya cleanses every crystal using salt, sunlight or sound before activating it with Reiki and Vedic mantras and placing it in its Vastu zone. You can follow a similar, simpler routine at home.
02
What is the difference between cleansing and charging?
Cleansing removes old energy from a crystal, while charging fills it with fresh energy and a clear purpose. Think of cleansing as washing a vessel and charging as filling it.
Always cleanse first and charge afterwards. Charging a crystal that has not been cleansed is like pouring fresh water into a dusty glass. Some people also use the word 'programming' for the step of setting an intention, which is part of charging.
03
What are the safest ways to cleanse crystals?
The safest ways to cleanse crystals, suitable for almost every stone, are sound, moonlight and indirect contact with salt or selenite. These methods do not touch the crystal with water or strong heat.
01
Sound
Ring a bell, strike a singing bowl or chant ॐ (Om) near the crystals for a minute or two. Sound suits large collections and crystals fixed in place.
02
Moonlight
Place crystals on a clean windowsill or balcony overnight, especially on a full-moon night, and bring them in before the morning sun.
03
Dry salt bowl
Put crystals in a small glass bowl that sits inside a larger bowl of sea salt, so the stones do not touch the salt directly.
04
Selenite plate
Rest small crystals on a selenite plate or next to a Clear Quartz cluster for several hours.
05
Smoke
Pass crystals through the smoke of natural incense or dhoop with a window open.
04
Which cleansing methods can damage some crystals?
Water, salt and strong sunlight can damage certain crystals, so check your stone before using them. A simple rule is that soft, porous or brightly coloured stones need gentle methods.
01
Water-sensitive
Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Hematite and Lapis Lazuli can dissolve, rust or dull with water or salt water.
02
Sun-sensitive
Amethyst, Rose Quartz and Citrine can fade in long, direct sunlight.
03
Salt-sensitive
Direct salt can scratch or pit softer and porous stones.
04
Heat and shock
Never place crystals in hot water or move them straight from hot sun to a cold surface.
05
How do you charge a crystal after cleansing?
Charge a crystal by holding it in your hands, taking a few slow breaths and clearly stating what you want it to support, such as calm, focus or prosperity. This intention is the heart of charging.
You can add to it with moonlight, a short time in gentle morning sunlight for hard stones like Clear Quartz, resting it on a Clear Quartz cluster, or chanting a familiar mantra. Reiki practitioners channel Reiki into the crystal. Dr. Kimaya activates crystals for clients with Reiki and Vedic mantras before placing them.
06
How often should you cleanse and charge crystals?
Cleanse and charge most crystals once a month, and more often if they sit in busy or heavy areas. A good habit is a monthly full-moon cleanse for your whole collection.
Cleanse a crystal as soon as you bring it home, after someone else has handled it, after an argument or illness in the house, and whenever it looks dull or feels heavy to you. Protective stones like Black Tourmaline at the entrance may need weekly cleansing.
Store crystals thoughtfully between uses. Wrap delicate stones in soft cloth, keep sharp points from knocking against each other, and avoid dusty open shelves. Handle them with clean hands, and keep small tumbled stones out of reach of young children and pets, who may try to put them in their mouths.
07
How do cleansed crystals support Vastu remedies?
Cleansed and charged crystals support Vastu remedies because correct placement works together with a clear, well-maintained stone. A crystal placed in the right zone but never cleansed is simply less effective as a remedy.
Common placements include Citrine or Pyrite near the cash locker, Amethyst in the North-East for calm, Rose Quartz in the South-West for relationships and Black Tourmaline near the entrance. Crystals complement Vastu and medical care; they do not replace either.
08
When to consult a crystal therapist
Consult a crystal therapist if you are unsure which crystals suit your concerns, where to place them in your home, or how to care for a particular stone. Some powerful crystals need correct placement and activation.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers crystal therapy with Vastu at VastuKimaya's office in Andheri East, on-site across Mumbai and through distant consultations. She selects, cleanses, activates and places crystals, and guides you on how to care for them afterwards.
Questions
Frequently asked
Can I cleanse crystals with salt water?
Only hard, non-porous stones such as Clear Quartz tolerate salt water. Many stones, including Selenite, Malachite and Pyrite, can be damaged, so a dry indirect salt bowl is safer.
Can I cleanse all my crystals together?
Yes, you can cleanse a collection together using sound or moonlight, which are safe for almost all stones.
Does selenite need cleansing?
Selenite is often described as self-cleansing, but many people still refresh it with sound or moonlight. Never put selenite in water.
How long should crystals stay in sunlight?
Keep sun exposure short, around an hour of gentle morning light, and only for hard stones that do not fade.
Should I cleanse a new crystal before using it?
Yes. Always cleanse a new crystal before charging and placing it, because it has passed through many hands.
